Abstract: ABSTRACT ESTABLISHING MACHINE TYPE COMMUNICATIONS USING SHARED SIM PARAMETER A method for establishing a machine type communication includes receiving a connection request for a machine type communication from a device. The connection request includes an authentication credential for the device. A shared subscriber identity module (SIM) parameter for the machine type communication is obtained based on the authentication credential. REFER TO FIGURE 5

Specification

CLAIMS
1. A method, comprising:
receiving, from a machine type communication (MTC) device, a connection request for a machine type communication, wherein the connection request includes an authentication credential for the MTC device; and
obtaining a shared subscriber identity module (SIM) parameter for the machine type communication based on the authentication credential.
2. The method of claim 1, further comprising: transmitting, to the MTC device, the shared SIM parameter.
3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:
receiving, from the MTC device, a registration request, wherein the registration request includes the shared SIM parameter;
registering the MTC device with a cellular network using the shared SIM parameter; and
receiving, from the MTC device, a data packet for the machine type communication.
4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:
receiving, from the MTC device, a deregistration indication; and
sending, in response to the deregistration indication, a release message that releases the shared SIM parameter.
5. The method of claim 2, wherein the shared SIM parameter that is transmitted to the MTC device is encrypted by a public key of the MTC device.
6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
establishing, independent of sending the shared SIM parameter to the MTC device, a machine type communication Channel for the MTC device using the shared SIM parameter.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the obtaining the shared SIM parameter
comprises:
sending the authentication credential to a device management Server; and receiving, in response to the authentication credential, the shared SIM parameter.
8. The method of claim 1, wherein the MTC device is a Long Term Evolution (LTE) device that is configured for the machine type communication.
9. The method of claim 1, wherein the shared SIM parameter is stored in a network access node and is refrained firom being transmitted to the MTC device.
10. The method of claim 1, wherein the connection request is transmitted using a low overhead high-layer protocol that is encapsulated in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) access message.
11. The method of claim 1, wherein the connection request is received over a first wireless network and the shared SIM parameter is used to establish communication for a second wireless network that uses a different radio access technology than the first wireless network.
12. The method of claim 11, wherein the first wireless network uses wireless local area network (WLAN) radio access technology and the second wireless network uses Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access technology.
13. A method, comprising:
transmitting, to an access network, a connection request for a machine type communication, wherein the connection request includes an authentication credential for a Machine Type Communication (MTC) device;
receiving, in response to the connection request, a shared subscriber identity module (SIM) parameter for the machine type communication;
transmitting a registration request for a communication Channel, wherein the registration request includes the shared SIM parameter;

receiving, in response to the registration request, a registration response that grants a communication Channel; and
transmitting a data packet for the machine type communication over the communication Channel.
14. The method of claim 13, wherein the data packet for the machine type communication is transmitted over the access network.
15. The method of claim 13, further comprising:
transmitting a deregistration indication, wherein the deregistration indication releases the shared SIM parameter.
16. The method of claim 13, wherein receiving the shared SIM parameter
comprises receiving an encrypted shared SIM parameter, further comprising:
decrypting the encrypted shared SIM parameter.
17. The method of claim 13, wherein the connection request is transmitted at a Long Term Evolution (LTE) MTC device that is configured for the machine type communication.
18. The method of claim 13, wherein the connection request is transmitted using a low overhead high-layer protocol that is encapsulated in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) access message.
19. The method of claim 13, wherein the connection request is transmitted over a first wireless network and the shared SIM parameter is used to establish the machine type communication over a second wireless network that uses a different radio access technology than the first wireless network.
20. The method of claim 19, wherein the first wireless network uses wireless local area network (WLAN) radio access technology and the second wireless network uses Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access technology.

21. A device, comprising:
a memory; and
at least one hardware processor communicatively coupled with the memory and configured to:
receive, from a Machine Type Communication (MTC) device, a connection request for a machine type communication, wherein the connection request includes an authentication credential for the MTC device; and
obtain a shared subscriber identity module (SIM) parameter for the machine type communication based on the authentication credential.
22. The device of claim 21, wherein the at least one hardware processor is
further configured to:
transmit, to the MTC device, the shared SIM parameter.
23. The device of claim 22, wherein the at least one hardware processor is
further configured to:
receive, from the MTC device, a registration request, wherein the registration request includes the shared SIM parameter;
register the MTC device with a cellular network using the shared SIM parameter; and
receive, from the MTC device, a data packet for the machine type communication.
24. The device of claim 23, wherein the at least one hardware processor is
further configured to:
receive, from the MTC device, a deregistration indication; and send, in response to the deregistration indication, a release message that releases the shared SIM parameter.
25. The device of claim 22, wherein the shared SIM parameter that is
transmitted to the MTC device is encrypted by a public key of the MTC device.

26. The device of claim 21, wherein the at least one hardware processor is
further configured to:
establish, independent of sending the shared SIM parameter to the MTC device, a machine type communication Channel for the MTC device using the shared SIM parameter.
27. The device of claim 21, wherein the obtaining the shared SIM parameter
comprises:
sending the authentication credential to a device management Server; and receiving, in response to the authentication credential, the shared SIM parameter.
28. The device of claim 21, wherein the MTC device is a Long Term Evolution (LTE) device that is configured for the machine type communication.
29. The device of claim 21, wherein the shared SIM parameter is stored in a network access node and is refrained firom being transmitted to the MTC device.
30. The device of claim 21, wherein the connection request is transmitted using a low overhead high-layer protocol that is encapsulated in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) access message.
31. The device of claim 21, wherein the connection request is received over a first wireless network and the shared SIM parameter is used to establish communication for a second wireless network that uses a different radio access technology than the first wireless network.
32. The device of claim 31, wherein the first wireless network uses wireless local area network (WLAN) radio access technology and the second wireless network uses Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access technology.
33. A device, comprising:
a memory; and

at least one hardware processor communicatively coupled with the memory and configured to:
transmit, to an access network, a connection request for a machine type communication, wherein the connection request includes an authentication credential for the device;
receive, in response to the connection request, a shared subscriber identity module (SIM) parameter for the machine type communication;
transmit a registration request for a communication Channel, wherein the registration request includes the shared SIM parameter;
receive, in response to the registration request, a registration response that grants a communication Channel; and
transmit a data packet for the machine type communication over the communication Channel.
34. The device of claim 33, wherein the data packet for the machine type communication is transmitted over the access network.
35. The device of claim 33, wherein the at least one hardware processor is further configured to:
transmit a deregistration indication, wherein the deregistration indication releases the shared SIM parameter.
36. The device of claim 33, wherein the receiving the shared SIM parameter
comprises receiving an encrypted shared SIM parameter, further comprising:
decrypting the encrypted shared SIM parameter.
37. The device of claim 33, wherein the device comprises a Long Term Evolution (LTE) device that is configured for the machine type communication.
38. The device of claim 33, wherein the connection request is transmitted using a low overhead high-layer protocol that is encapsulated in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) access message.

39. The device of claim 33, wherein the connection request is transmitted over a first wireless network and the shared SIM parameter is used to establish the machine type communication over a second wireless network that uses a different radio access technology than the first wireless network.
40. The device of claim 39, wherein the first wireless network uses wireless local area network (WLAN) radio access technology and the second wireless network uses Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access technology.
41. A tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium containing Instructions which, when executed, cause a Computing device to perform Operations comprising:
receiving, from a Machine Type Communication (MTC) device, a connection request for a machine type communication, wherein the connection request includes an authentication credential for the MTC device; and
obtaining a shared subscriber identity module (SIM) parameter for the machine type communication based on the authentication credential.
42. A tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium containing
Instructions which, when executed, cause a Computing device to perform Operations
comprising:
transmitting, to an access network, a connection request for a machine type communication, wherein the connection request includes an authentication credential for the Computing device;
receiving, in response to the connection request, a shared subscriber identity module (SIM) parameter for the machine type communication;
transmitting a registration request for a communication Channel, wherein the registration request includes the shared SIM parameter;
receiving, in response to the registration request, a registration response that grants a communication Channel; and
transmitting a data packet for the machine type communication over the communication Channel.
