Abstract: The subject matter described herein relates to an exhaust system for an automobile. According to one embodiment, an exhaust system includes a first passage, a second passage and a switching device. The switching device can attain a first position and a second position. In the first position, the gases are discharged to the atmosphere through the first passage, thereby resulting in a reduced sound level. In the second position, the gases are discharged to the atmosphere through the second passage, thereby resulting in a high sound level.
1, An exhaust system (100) for releasing exhaust gases trom an internal combustion
engine of a vehicle to the atmosphere, said exhaust system (100) comprising:
an exhaust pipe (102) connected to said internal combustion engine of said vehicle for intake of exhaust gases from said internal combustion engine;
a muffler (106), connected to said exhaust pipe (102), for releasing exhaust gases from said exhaust pipe (102) to the atmosphere, said mufllcr (106) comprising:
a plurality of expansion chambers (110); and
a plurality of pass-through (112) provided between said expansion chambers (110);
characterized in that,
said expansion chambers (110) and said pass-through (112) providing a plurality of passage for said exhaust gases, said plurality of passage comprising at least:
a first passage providing a tlrst predetermined exhaust sound elTecl; and
a second passage providing a second predetermined exhaust sound effect; and
a switching mechanism for selectively opening said first passage or said second passage.
2. The exhaust system (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said pass-through (112) are
pipes of predcfmed diameter.
3. The exhaust system (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said pass-through (112) are
holes of predefined diameter.
4. The exhaust system (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said expansion chambers
(110) have the same cross-sectional area.
5. The exhaust system (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said switching mechanism is
selected from amongst a plunger mechanism (200) or a valve mechanism (300, 400).
6. The exhaust system (100) as claimed in claim 5, wherein said plunger mechanism
(200) comprises a spring loaded plunger (206, 208).
7. fhe exhaust system (100) as claimed in claim 5, wherein said valve mechanism (300,
400) comprises one or more butterfly valves (302, 402, 404).
8. The exhaust system (100) as claimed in claim 1 or claim 5, wherein said switching
mechanism is actuated either mechanically or electrically.
9. fhe exhaust system (TOO) as claimed in claim 1, said system comprising:
an inlet port (104) for intake of exhaust gases from said internal combustion engine, wherein said inlet port (104) is provided on said exhaust pipe (102); and
