Extraction Of Gum/Natural Polymer From Strychnuos Potatorum For Industrial Applications

Abstract: The present invention relates to extraction of gum/natural polymer/binder from Strychnuos Potatorum/ Cleaning Nuts/ Nirmali to be used for different industrial applications in the same way guargum, locust bean gum, cassia tora, xanthan and alike gums/ biopolymers are used in their natural and modified forms. The particular use of said species in Pulp & Paper industry is studied in depth and found to be effective as strength additive/ functional polymer giving comparable results to gums used in this application for e.g. guargum, modified starches etc.

Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to extraction of gum/natural polymer/binder from Strychnuos Potatorum(botamcal name)/ Cleaning Nuts/ Nirmali(common names) to be used for different industrial applications in the same way guargum, locust bean gum, cassia tora, xanthan and alike gums/ biopolymers are used in their natural and modified forms.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The gum industry is an established industry internationally and gums either from natural source or synthetic
are used for numerous applications.
The ever growing use of gums commercially and industrially has led to increase in the prices of gums and
even sometimes the demand is also not met in case of failure of agriculturally cultivated crops like guar gum.
Scientists all over the world in this field are in constant search/research of alternatives of commonly available
gums because of economic reason, increasing demands and dependence of industries using the gums on
limited gum sources.
Exploring new applications is also one of the reasons that researchers in this field keep exploring new gum
sources/products
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Extraction of gum from an untapped source Strychnuos Potatorum/ Cleaning Nut and application/use of the gum for commercial/industrial application leading to better economics, lesser dependency on present gum sources, overall development of gum industry and also has a social benefit since the source is a forest produce and collected by tribal and poor people therefore, becoming a source of income for them.
DETAILED DECSRIPTION OF PREFFERED EMBODIMENT
Strychnuos Potatorum-St. Pot. (Botanical name)/ Cleaning Nut / Nirmali is a forest produce. The plant species
is reported to have water cleaning properties that is why it is called in English as Cleaning Nuts. Earlier people
used to rub its seed along the inside of their water filled pots of use to clean muddy or sandy water with the
seeds.
In the modern era, the seed is hardly used for this ancient use and rather people started using this for
adulteration of expensive similar looking seeds of commercial importance , for e.g it is used for adulteration of
Supari( used in Pan Preparation)
In the present invention, the gum is extracted from the seeds of Strychnuous Potatorum, any mesh size can be
achieved and tests were conducted to check this gum powder for behaviour like gums.
Gums, in the most common definition can be defined as a product that is sticky in nature, has property to hold
two surfaces together either loosely or strongly or we can say adhesive type property. Another property, which
a layman may not notice but also important from a technical person from the same field, is the viscosity.
The gum powder from St Pot stands good and complies well on all the criteria mentioned above. The gum
from St Pot was dissolved in water in different concentrations and checked for viscosity by Brookfield
Viscometer at different temperatures, different pH, it showed good gummy properties.

"Gum Industry is an established industry internationally and there are many gums synthetic or natural which are used in their natural or modified forms for many commercial and industrial applications. ' Commercial/Industrial Application of gums include
1. pulp and paper industry as wet end strength additive
As viscosity modifier in paper coating formulations Functional polymers for e.g. as retention aids Other functional behaviors
2. Textile Industry as printing thickener/gum
As yarn sizing chemical
3. Oil well drilling
4. Mining
5. Explosives
These are the most common industrial/non food applications, list is not complete; all the applications of commonly known gums such as guargum are to be included.
The inventor only would like to quote the non food application and not the food application of natural gums since no evidence/ clinical trials of St Pot suitability for human consumption was studied. It is also important to mention here that natural gums are used in these industrial applications in either their natural or unmodified form( Unmodified here is reffered to as no chemical treatment given) and are also used as chemically modified products alone or as blends of different gums

CLAIMS
1. Extraction of gum or natural polymer or binder from Strcyhnuos Potatorum or Cleaning Nut(common
name) or Nirmali(comrnon name) and use/application of extracted gum in natural or modified form
for Industrial/ Commercial applications
2. In claim 1 wherein extraction of gum is done by soaking of Cleaning nuts in water and further grinded
to powder form
3. In claim 2 wherein the water used for extraction may be acidic, neutral or alkaline
4. In claim 1 wherein extraction of gum is carried out by first coarse grinding of cleaning nuts, then
sieving to remove fibrous undesired substance and further fine grinded to powder form
5. In claim 3 wherein the process of coarse grinding and sieving may be eliminated and only fine
grinding to powder form is done with a little compromise in gum properties
6. In claim 1 wherein the extracted gum is used in pulp and paper industry for wet end additive
7. In claim 1 wherein the extracted gum is used as replacement/substitute/partial substitute of commonly
and commercially known gums such as guar gum, cassia tora, locust bean, cassis fistula, xanthan,
carrageanan, gum Arabic/acacia, CMC, carboxy methyl starch, modified starches and alike for
industrial/commercial non food/ non edible applications
