Fault Tolerant Synchronous Inverter

Abstract: Methods and devices to enable a synchronous inverter to have a grid fault current limiting behaviour similar to a synchronous generator are provided. A three-phase current signal (i) is obtained from a voltage source inverter supplying power from a power source to a power system network. The three-phase current signal (i) is converted to an equivalent two-phase current signal (i′dq), where the equivalent twophase current signal (i′dq) comprises a first current component (i′d) and a second current component (i′q). The first current component (i′d) and the second current component (i′q) are passed through a filter of a cross-coupled compensator to determine a first cross-coupled current component (id) and a second cross-coupled current component (iq). A control signal is determined based on the first crosscoupled current component (id) and the second cross-coupled current component (iq), to generate a switching pulse sequence for the voltage source inverter to emulate a synchronous generator.
