'TIRE AND CORROSION RETARDANT, THERMALLY CONDUCTING LOW TENSION ELECTRICAL INSULATION TAPE" AND THE PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME.
PRS Solutions Private Limited, a Company incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 and having its office at 63, Bombay Samachar Marg, Mumbai - 400 001 Maharashtra State, India, India.
The following specification particularly describes and ascertain the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed
FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
This invention relates to manufacture of "Fire And Corrosion Retardant, Thermally Conducting Low Tension Electrical Insulation Tape" and the process of manufacturing the same. The said tape is self adhesive tape which is fire retardant, electrically insulating, thermally conducting and a retarder for chemical and electrolytic corrosion.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART:
Conventional pressure sensitive adhesive compositions include elastomer such as natural rubber or synthetic rubber e.g. polyisoprene, butadiene-styrene (SBR) polymers, thermoplastic rubbers or the like combined with tackifying resins, e.g. hydrocarbon resins and polyterpene resins, plasticizers, fillers, colourants, antioxidants etc. are added to the pressure sensitive adhesive in order to achieve desired properties.
Conventional pressure sensitive adhesive tapes are obtained by coating pressure sensitive adhesive on cloth or film or any other backing material namely paper, foil etc. Electrically insulating range of tapes are made using insulating backing material and specially formulated adhesive. Fire retardant electrically insulating pressure sensitive adhesive tapes are made using fire retardant backing material and specially formulated fire retardant adhesive. However, these tapes having fire retardant properties are not thermally conducting and do not have corrosion resistant properties.
Traditionally one of the means of protecting metal parts/components against corrosion has been to use paints, lubrication, powders etc. A new technology developed using contact corrosion inhibitor, is involved in manufacturing corrosion resistant pressure sensitive adhesive tape. This tape is also made thermally conducting by the addition of special grade thermally conducting material.
Thus fire retardancy, corrosion resistance, thermal conductance, electriacal insulation are four separate features incorporated in the present tape and not seen in other tapes.
INVENTION:
Fire And Corrosion Retardant, Thermally Conducting Low Tension Electrical Insulation Tape is newly developed self adhesive tape which is fire retardant, electrically insulating, thermally conducting and can resist electrolytic corrosion where contact corrosion inhibitor technology is used to achieve anti-corrosive features in the adhesive tape. Thus in Fire And Corrosion Retardant, Thermally Conducting Low Tension Electrical Insulation Tape, contact corrosion inhibitor technology will provide corrosion protection, the tape will be thermally conducting and fire retardancy of the tape will guard against fire hazards.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
The manufacturing of Fire And Corrosion Retardant, Thermally Conducting Low Tension Electrical Insulation Tape consists of applying a pressure sensitive adhesive on one side of cellulose fabric and a water proofing compound on the other side of the fabric. The said pressure sensitive adhesive and the water proofing compound are formulated to have fire/corrosion retardant, thermally conducting and electrical insulation properties. The process of applying both the pressure sensitive adhesive and water proofing compound are carried out by conventional method of coating equipment followed by using known drying/curing methods. The said fabric is slit to obtain the tape in desired length and width.
The pressure sensitive adhesive is manufactured by blending various materials comprising elastomeric material eg. natural and/or synthetic rubbers, tackifying resins like hydrocarbon or polyterpene resins, fillers like oxides and/or hydroxides of conducting paste metals, materials naturally occurring minerals, halogenated organic/
inorganic compounds, a conducting paste, curing agents and followed by solvating with hydrocarbon/aromatic solvents to form a compound of coatable consistency and texture commensurate to the coating equipment.
The water proofing compound is manufactured by blending various materials comprising of synthetic polymers, fillers like oxides and/or hydroxides of metal, naturally occurring minerals, halogenated organic/inorganic compounds, curing agents, followed by solvating with hydrocarbon/aromatic solvents to form a compound of coatable consistency and texture commensurate to the coating equipment.
The backing material in this invention can be cellulose fabrics like white or black cotton cloth, white, pink or black rayon cloth either in woven or non-woven form.
The fire retardant waterproofing compound is based on fire retardant resin suitably modified with softeners, fillers, pigments and stabillisers.
The adhesive of this invention comprises of elastomeric component, tackifier, fillers, antioxidants, corrosion resistant additives thermally conducting additives etc.
The elastomeric component of the pressure sensitive adhesive comprises of two parts (I) natural rubber like Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) Grade-I, RMA Grade-II, RMA Grade-Ill, RMA Grade-IV, Pale Crepe of various grades and (ii) synthetic rubber like Stylene Butadiene Rubber, Fluro elastomer, Polychloroprene etc.
The adhesive of the present invention includes a tackifier which can be formed of hydrocarbon resins, rosin and rosin derivatives, polyterpenes, coumarone-indene resins, any compatible conventional tackifier or mixtures thereof. The resins can be modified with alpha methyl styrene. It has been found that a mixture of resins can provide a better balance of properties than any one resin alone.
The adhesive of this invention contains fillers which can be formed of calcium carbonate, barytes, alminium hydroxide, zinc oxide, clay, antimony oxide and mixtures thereof in order to extend the adhesive and alter its appearance.
The adhesive of this invention includes small amounts of other modifiers such antioxidants, heat stabilizers pigments and the like. Antioxidants and heat stabilizers are to be used for improved heat stability of the adhesive. Typical antioxidants are 2, 5 ditertiary amyl hydroquinone, di-tertiary butyl cresol and amines. Conventional heat stabilizers such as Zinc salts of alkyl dithiocarbomates are used in the present invention. Ultraviolet absorbers are added to the adhesive when improved outdoor weathering is required.
Coloured pigments are added to obtain a colored adhesive.
A process of manufacturing "Fire And Corrosion Retardant, Thermally Conducting Low Tension Electrical Insulation Tape" renders ease of application on a joint of conductor carrying electrical energy of low tension and the resultant joint, wherein the tape provides in addition to a sheathing and electrical insulation, a protection against water ingress, prevents the spread of fire and protects the conductor from the effect of corrosion and at the same time dissapitates heat.
