, Description:FIXTURE AND METHOD FOR REMOVING/INSERTING JAW FACES OF HYDRAULIC GRIP IN DYNAMIC TEST MACHINES

FIELD OF INVENTION:
[001] The present invention relates to a fixture used to remove / insert jaw faces of a high capacity hydraulic test machines like Instron 1276. In particular, the invention is directed to a fixture and method for removing/inserting Jaw Faces of Hydraulic Grip in Dynamic test machines.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION/PRIOR ART:
[002] Background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.

[003] The pair of jaw faces used in hydraulic testing machines are constructed in a tapered fashion to enable strong griping of the samples. The closing of the jaw faces is done by moving a ring enveloping the faces which is pushed by the hydraulic force. In order to change the jaw face for accommodating a higher size sample in the event of maintenance, it is a strenuous activity to pull the pair of jaw faces out of the ring or the grip itself. It is near to impossible at times due to the tapered shape of the jaw face. Even if we remove the fastener holding one jaw, it cannot be taken out as the shape is bisectioned truncated cone and the tapper in the surface guides the jaw in such a fashion that it comes and gets locked with the other jaw. So in no way the jaw faces can be removed just by removing the fasteners. Hence, a fixture needs to be designed and fabricated to hold one jaw face in place and removes the other. Hence, the fixture avoids self-locking of the pair of jaw face and the same can be used to remove and reinsert when needed.

[009] There are conventional dynamic testing equipments available world vide to perform fatigue testing of standard samples. In the event of changing the sample size, the jaw face needs to be changed to suit the size of the sample. Due to the tapered and truncated shape of the jaw faces, it is near to impossible to remove the jaw face just by loosening the fasteners. Hence a fixture is mandatory to assist the operator in removing the jaw faces from the grip. Therefore, the present invention has been introduced.
[0010] According to this invention, there is provided a fixture for removing/inserting Jaw Faces of Hydraulic Grip in Dynamic test machines comprising a base plate [1] provided with multitude of through holes [2], wherein a leg [3] is provided at an intermediate location of the base plate [1] between the holes [2] and a bolt [4] is placed through the leg [3].
[0011] The leg [3] is pierced through the base plate [1] with its protruded part on one side of the plate [1], in which the leg is having hollow cylindrical section.
[0012] A nut [5] is superimposed on the protruded part of the leg [3].

[0013] The bolt [4] is fastened to the extension leg [3] by the nut [5].
[0014] Further, according to this invention, there is provided a method for removing/inserting Jaw Faces of Hydraulic Grip in Dynamic test machines by a fixture comprising steps of:

One skilled in the art will readily recognize from the following description that alternative embodiments of the structures and methods illustrated herein may be employed without departing from the principles of the disclosure described herein.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION WITH REFRENCE TO THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS:
[0020] While the embodiments of the disclosure are subject to various modifications and alternative forms, specific embodiment thereof have been shown by way of example in the figures and will be described below. It should be understood, however, that it is not intended to limit the disclosure to the particular forms disclosed, but on the contrary, the disclosure is to cover all modifications, equivalents, and alternative falling within the scope of the disclosure.

[0021] The present invention makes a disclosure regarding a technology pertaining to a fixture and method used to remove / insert jaw faces of a high capacity hydraulic test machines.

[0022] Now, reference may be made to the accompanying Figures 1, 2 and 3.

[0023] As discussed the objective of the invention is to design and fabricate a fixture used to remove/Insert the pair of Jaw Faces of a Hydraulic Grip in high capacity Dynamic test machines. The fixture includes the following parts:
1 – Base plate of fixture
2 – Holes for fastening the fixture to the plane of grip
3 – Extended leg to facilitate movement of jaw
4 – Hexagonal head bolt to push the jaw face

[0024] The fixture of the invention comprises a base plate [1] provided with multitude of through holes [2]. A leg in the form of protruding part [3] is provided at an intermediate location of the base plate [1] between the holes [2] as shown in the figures. This leg [3] is pierced through the base plate [1] with its protruded part on one side of the plate [1], wherein the leg is having hollow cylindrical section. A bolt [4] is placed through the leg [3] and also the bolt [4] is fastened to the extension leg [3] by means of a nut [5]. Here, the nut [5] is superimposed on the protruded part of the leg [3] as best seen in figure 3.

[0025] The fixture is made of metal including stainless steel without restricting scope of the invention to the same. Thus, other materials readily apparent to a person skilled in the art understood to be within purview of the invention.

[0026] Said base plate [1] of the fixture is positioned with the grips so that the holes provided in the fixture align exactly with the existing holes in the grip. The bolt [4] fastened to the extension leg [3] is now just placed under the jaw face. Since the annular portion between the jaw face and ring of the hydraulic grip is lubricated, a gentle push on the jaw face assists it to move up. The push is given by the rotation of bolt [4] inside its female portion.

[0027] As now one jaw face is held at a higher position, it gives enough space for the next jaw face to slide and come out of the hydraulic grip. Thus holding of one of the jaw faces at an elevated position, avoids any chance for self-locking of the pair of jaws. Hence, this enables operator to remove the jaw face during any maintenance activity.

ADVANTAGES OF INVENTION
- The fixture is portable.
- It can be universally used for any capacity of machine.
- Light weight.
- Easy to handle.
- Simple in construction.
