, Description:FIXTURE FOR PERFORMING MACHINING OPERATIONS ON BAFFLE RING AND ITS CARRIER OF LARGE RATING TURBO-GENERATOR
FIELD OF INVENTION
[0001] The present disclosure, in general, relates to a fixture for performing machining operations on baffle ring and its carrier of large rating turbo-generator. More particularly, the present invention relates to the universally adjustable fixture/work piece holder for machining of annular objects which supports and self-centers a work piece which is mountable on a machine table.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
[0002] Background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
[0003] Work Piece holders and fixtures have been employed heretofore to facilitate the machining of objects at different planes. However, several devices of the prior art have not proven entirely satisfactory inasmuch as they are complicated in design and construction, expensive to manufacture, and difficult to use.
[0004] Present invention is described for machining of a Turbo Generator Baffle Ring and Baffle Ring Carrier in which facing, slotting, drilling, pinning, tapping and spot facing are required.
[0005] A generator is driven by turbine which is used for conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy, wherein stator frame, rotor, end shield, seal body are the main components of turbo Generator.
[0006] Most important design criteria of a generator are class of insulation used and dissipation of heat generated due to copper loss and core loss. Even class of insulation is based on the heat sustainability of insulation. To improve the heat dissipation, generator is filled either by Hydrogen (higher rating machine)/ Air (Few low rating machine) at more than atmospheric pressure. In most of the machine this pressure is nearly 4 Bar or more.
[0007] Baffle Ring Assembly consisting of Baffle Ring and Baffle Ring Carrier being a very critical component of turbo-generator assembly, every dimension of the same is very important for proper functioning of the machine.
[0008] All the Turbo Generators (TGs) of higher rating has cooling media filled inside it, at a pressure 4 to 5 times higher than the atmospheric pressure, for better cooling of machine. This cooling media is regulated inside the generator with help of blades fitted on the rotor and baffle ring assembly done on the stator part.
[0009] For 500 MW and above rated generator, a cooler housing is place at Turbine End (TE) of the generator which houses cooler to cool the cooling media filled inside the generator.
[0010] Baffle ring along with the rotor blades provides fanning action and the hot air from inside the winding area is sucked and then pressurized on to the cooler. After passing through the cooler this gets cold and due to the negative pressure on the Exciter End (EE) it enters the stator and rotor through the EE cooling the complete winding and core.
[0011] Temperature regulation of any electric machine of very high rating is one of the very important design parameters and hence, baffle ring assembly is a very critical component of the TGs.
[0012] Baffle ring assembly, consist of two major components Baffle Ring and Baffle Ring Carrier both these components are machined on a Horizontal Boring Machine. Accurate and precise machining of these components are very important for reliable performance of the TGs.
[0013] Machining operation required to manufacture such a Baffle Ring and Baffle Ring Carrier are face machining, holes pinning, back spot facing of holes, drilling of locking holes, holes threading, window machining.
[0014] The detailed machining process of Baffle ring/ Baffle ring carrier by earlier practice is described below-
[0015] First of all, 4 equal height blocks are kept on the machine bed, prior to keeping the work piece (Baffle ring/ Baffle ring carrier) on the machine bed. Job is placed on these blocks with help of crane. In this process the job is not kept in the machine table center as blocks position with respect to machine table is not fixed. Any machining operation on the work piece can only be done if the work piece is in center with the machine table.
[0016] For centering of the work piece on the machine table, machine operator uses
[0017] Mallet to move the work piece on the machine table and then dial the work piece to achieve centering. This is not only a time-consuming process but also has adverse effect on the quality of job, as baffle ring is made up of softer material (Aluminum).
[0018] After centering of the work piece, work piece is clamped, and there are chances of shifting in the work piece during clamping as clamps are placed from the sides of the work piece.
[0019] Also, problem with the external clamping was that, T-slots are there in only one plane of the table, which make it very difficult to center the work piece in other plane and longer clamps has to be used for this purpose. Because of this force are also not equal from all four clamps.
[0020] Clamping done from the outside also leads to fouling of clamp with the machine head during few operations and their respective position needs to be changed as per the requirement, again leading to time loss.
[0021] Machining, which without a proper fixture, is to be done on the outer circumference, parting face ribs and top face of Baffle Ring and Baffle Ring Carrier not only poses a great threat to the job quality and consumes cost expensive resources but also makes the job largely dependent of operator’s dexterity in performing multiple job settings and doing the required job setting calculations. One of the challenges with this kind of machining arrangement was mismatch of pitch circle diameter, deviation in position of holes and other key design parameters on both Baffle Ring and Baffle Ring Carrier during assembly. This also increases rejection and indirectly cycle time.
[0022] Therefore, a need exists for universally adjustable work holder fixture for machining of annular objects, particularly for jobs like turbo Generator Baffle Ring and Baffle Ring Carrier that too in minimum possible job settings. Hence, the present invention has been introduced.
