Specification

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a fixture capable of serving for the road transport of
large size turbogenerator stator for example 600/660 MW having weight around 316
tons and a support width of approx. 3.88 m which is greater than the road trailer
width of approx. 3 meters. More particularly, the present invention relates to a device
with flat bottom for rigidly supporting large size turbogenerator stators in overhang
from the trailer.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The large size turbogenerator stators generally have length between 7 to 10 meters
and width between 3 to 4 meters and height 4 meters. Rail transport of such stator
which is a heavy consignment of large size require special beam type wagon. The
large size turbogenerator stator comes under class 'C of over-Dimensioned
consignments (ODC) according to permissible limit values of width and height of the
consignment in Rail transport.
At present, such special, rail wagon are scarcely available. Also the thermal power
plant where such turbogenerators are installed do not have railway tracks enroute to
the Power Plant erection area and thus moving the large size turbogenerator is a
difficult task. Because of non availability of railway track facility and uncertainties
about availability of special wagon at the time of dispatch of stator., delays result in
dispatch, erection and commissioning of the thermal plants. Also turbogenerator
stator has round bottom surface with projection at Exciter end for assembly of
terminal bushings. All these disadvantages necessitated to develop a suitable flat
bottomed fixture for stator

transportation by road which will support the stator properly and carry its full weight
safely.
Two types of fixture existing for road transport of stators of Turbogenerators have
been manufactured based on the principle of stator weight and the support width of
stator being less or more than the trailer width.
In case of stator weight around 200 tons and the support width of stator being less
than or equal to the trailor width, the stator is supported at two axial locations by
fixtures having vertical box type structures. The axial forces were supported partly
through bolts under shear and partly through friction at top plates of fixtures.
In case of stator weight around 270 tons and the support width of stator more than
the trailer width, the stator was supported at four axial locations by fixtures having
inclined box type structures. The axial forces were again supported partly through
bolts under shear and partly through friction at top plates of fixtures.
The present invented fixture for road transport of large turbogenerator stator of
600/660 MW is designed to support the stator at multiple locations (ten numbers)
along the length and providing axial constraint by cross beams against end faces of
the stator. The present fixture design has improved upon previous designs by using
cross beams for axial constraint, thus avoiding bolt loading in shear and providing
more uniform supporting of larger size stators through multiple support locations. In
addition, the supporting at multiple locations improves stability during transportation
and also reduces the stresses occurring in the stator body during transportation. The
fixture is capable of road transport of the over-dimensioned consignment of stator for
example of 600/660 MW turbogenetaror.

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore an object of the invention to propose a device for fixedly supporting
large size turbogenerator stators on trailer-bed during road transportation which
eliminates the disadvantages of prior art.
Another object of the invention is to propose a device for fixedly supporting large size
turbogenerator stators on trailer bed for road transport of over-dimensioned
consignment.
A still another object of the invention is to propose a device for fixedly supporting
large size turbogenerator stators on trailer bed to withstand bending loads from stator
due to its overhang from trailer support width.
A further object of the invention is to propose a device for fixedly supporting large
size turbogenerator stators on trailer bed to withstand the horizontal forces emerging
during road transportation.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly there is provided a device for road transport of a stator of a large size
turbogenerator which is a fabricated steel structure. The width of the stator at center
and at its support plates is 3.88 meter while the typical width of road trailer is only
2.7 to 3 meter. Since the stator has a round bottom, it is supported only from plurality
of support plates in overhang from the trailer. The device has a flat base formed by
plurality of fabricated box beams in transverse direction connected by at least two
longitudinal channels and a plurality of fabricated vertical beams for load transfer. A

plurality of vertical channels provided with plurality of inclined stiffener channels are
welded with longitudinal channels to support the stator. The device provides axial
locking with cross beams against both end faces of stator. A plurality of vertical
channels is connected by tie rods to provide rigidity in axial direction. The design of
the invention has been developed and optimized using Finite Element Analysis
technique.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a device for road transport, of a large size
turbogenerator stator which is developed as a fabricated steel structure. Since
turbogenerator stator has round bottom surface, the device supports the stator from
its support plates in overhang from the trailer.

As shown in Fig.1, the device has a flat base formed by a plurality of fabricated box
beams (2) in a transverse direction welded with at least two longitudinal channels (1)
and a plurality of fabricated vertical beams for load transfer. Vertical beams are
formed by fabrication of vertical channels (3) with plates (11,12) and at least one top
plate (7) for each beam. The box beams (2) are made with specific parameters to
withstand bending loads from stator due to overhang from trailor bed. A plurality of
inclined stiffener channels (4) welded with longitudinal channels (1) at one end and
vertical channels (3) at the other end provide rigid support to the stator. A plurality of
fabricated I-beams (6) are welded on top of a plurality of Pulling beams (5) at both
ends of base for axial constraint of stator. All vertical channels (3) are connected by a
plurality of tie rods (10,14) to provide rigidity in axial direction. The pulling beams
(5)at the end and fabricated stopper I-beam (6) are designed to withstand axial
forces during starting, accelerating and braking of stator. The vertical and inclined
fabricated channels(3,4) are designed to withstand horizontal forces emerging during
transportation. Additional Stiffener Plates (9) are provided with suitable holes for
slinging/lifting purposes. Shims are used to ensure distributed loading on all vertical
channels (3), of the device from the support plates of the stator. At least four top
plates (8) are welded with vertical beams at four corners to give rigidity to the device.
A plurality of closing plates (13) and lugs (16) supports the pulling beams (5) and
stopper I-beams (6).
As shown in Fig. 2, the sub-assemblies are first fabricated and them assembly of the
device is done through fabrication as shown in Fig. 1. All the fabrication are done with
high quality welding technique.

WE CLAIM:
1. A device for fixedly supporting large size turbogenerator stator on trailer bed
during transportation, the stator having a plurality of support plates, the said
device comprising:
a plurality of box beams (2) consisting of a plurality of steel plates including at
least one top plate;
at least two longitudinal channels (1) connecting the box beams (2) while a
plurality of vertical beams being fabricated with longitudinal channels (2) and a
