Fixture For Safe Road Transport Of Emergency Stop Valve (Esv) And Control Valve (Cv) Of Steam Turbines

Abstract: A fixture for safe road transport of emergency stop valve and control valve is having a base structure made of 5 Nos. ‘I’ shaped beams (01) kept in longitudinal direction and 3 Nos. ‘I’ shaped beams (02) kept in transverse direction. ‘C’ shaped channel (04) is provided along with transverse beam for providing extra support. Wooden blocks are fixed with ‘C’ shaped channels (10) and transverse beams (02). ESV and CV are kept on wooden pads (5). These wooden pads are smooth cut in shapes to suit curved surface of EV and CV.

Specification

FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a fixture for safe road transport of emergency
stop valve (ESV) and control valve (CV) of Steam turbines. More particularly, the
invention relates to a fixture with better stability and rigidity enhancing safety of
transport.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
ESV & CV is the key component of the Thermal Power Plant operating with
500/600MW steam turbine. The ESV & CV casing assembly along with Stop and Control
Valves has a weight of about 20 Tons and dimensions of 3.3m x 3.3m x 2.5m.
There has been instances that some steam turbine components toppled during
road transportation and there has been huge monetary losses in this regard. With huge
weight of subject assembly and limitation of support location due to complexity of the
product, the transportation fixture should be safe from strength point of view for
carrying the component on Indian road conditions. Hence, there was a need to design a
new fixture for safe transportation of ESV & CV for 500/600MW capacity steam
turbines.

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
Therefore, it is an object of the invention to propose a fixture for safe road
transport of emergency stop valve (ESV) and control valve (CV) of Steam turbines,
which is capable of providing better stability and rigidity enhancing safety of transport.
Another object of the invention is to propose a fixture for safe road transport of
emergency stop valve (ESV) and control valve (CV) of Steam turbines, which is able to
provide a frame with proper dimension to exactly fit the ESV and CV with optimum
height of package.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION
The invented fixture is made of fabricated steel for safe handling and road
transport of ESV and CV of the steam turbine. A frame is made with proper dimension
to fit the ESV and CV having dimensions of 3.3m x 3.3m x 2.5m. The height of the

package is pre calculated and optimized. A lifting arrangement is made to handle about
20 tons of weight easily.
As shown in Fig.1, base (B) of transportation package has been made of 5 Nos.
‘I’ shaped beams (01) kept in longitudinal direction and 3 Nos. ‘I’ shaped beams (02)
kept in transverse direction above longitudinal beams. Base of fixture fabricated with
the help of ‘C’ shaped channels joined with rectangular plates; ‘C’ shaped channels
placed in a way to provide for mounting of wooden blocks as well as prevent lateral
movement of the wooden blocks. Each ‘I’ shaped beam is fabricated with 2 Nos. ‘C’
shaped channels (Fig. 2) joined with rectangular plates (03) at suitable distances. 1
Nos. ‘C’ shaped channel (04) is also provided along with transverse beams (02) are also
welded together at suitable places to fabricate the base structure. Further, wooden
blocks (05 & 06) are fastened on transverse beams (02) with the help of studs, Bolts &
washers (07, 08, 09) of different sizes. Further 2 Nos. 'C' shaped channels (10) are
welded above transverse beams (02) which provide pocket for wooden blocks (11).
Wooden block are fastened with 'C' shaped channels (10) and transverse beams (02)
with the help of studs, Bolts & washers (12, 13, 14). ESV & CV is kept on the wooden
pads (05) and further secured with the help of steel straps (15). Wooden pads on which
ESV & CV is seated are smooth cut in shapes to suit curved surfaces of EV & CV.

The above fixture & valve is completely covered with wooden shooks (16) and GI
sheets (17). Top wooden beams (18) are provided to support top shook. Wooden
beams (19) are fastened with the base structure through fasteners (20, 21, 22).
Wooden shooks (16) are fixed on wooden beams (19) through nails. Covers (23) have
been provided for the protection of inlet end of EV & CV and also to prevent ingress of
dirt during transportation and storage at site.

WE CLAIM
1. A fixture for safe road transport of emergency stop valve (ESV) and control valve
(CV) of Steam turbines, the said fixture comprising;
a base (B) made of a plurality of ‘I’ shaped beams (01) kept in longitudinal
direction and a plurality of ‘I’ shaped beams (02) kept in transverse direction above
longitudinal beams;
at least one ‘C’ shaped channel (04) provided along with transverse beam for
providing extra support;
longitudinal beams (01) and transverse beams (02) welded together disposed at
suitable places for fabricating the base structure;
wooden blocks (05 & 06) fastened to transverse beams (02);
a plurality of ‘C’ shaped channels (10) welded above transverse beams (02) for
providing pocket for wooden blocks (11) fixed with ‘C’ shaped channels (10) and
transverse beams (02); wherein,
ESV and CV are kept on the wooden pads (05) and further secured with steel
strap (15) when the wooden pads are smooth cut in shapes for suiting curved surfaces
ESV and CV for proper resting of said valves wherein the fixture and the valve are
completely covered with wooden shooks (16) and GI sheets (17) where top wooden
beams are provided for supporting top shook wherein wooden shooks (16) are fixed on

wooden beams (19) fastened with the base structure when covers (23) are disposed for
protecting inlet end of EV and CV and for preventing ingress of dirt during transportation and storage at site.
2. The fixture as claimed in claim 1, wherein 5 Nos. of 'I' shaped beams (01) are
kept in longitudinal direction and 3 Nos. of I shaped beams (02) are kept in transverse
direction for making the base (B).
3. The fixture as claimed in claim 1, wherein each 'I' shaped beam is fabricated
with 2 Nos. of 'C' shaped channels fixed with rectangular plates (03) at suitable
distances on the base (B).
