THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION PARTICULARLY DESCRIBES THE INVENTION AND THE MANNER IN WHICH IT IS TO BE PERFORM
FIELD OF INVENTION:-
The present invention is related to die shop fixtures and process. More particularly, the present invention is related to fixture for setting up cam sliders in sheet metal dies in the die shop and the method of its set up and operation.
BACKGROUND OF THE PRESENT INVENTION:-
Conventionally for setting up the cam slider in the sheet metal dies, a dedicated crane and a series of operations are required which is a time consuming, unsafe and un-ergonomic activity. Referring to Figure 1, the method of setting up cam sliders in the sheet metal dies comprises of the steps of,
- Lifting and carrying a slider with the help of crane to the desired location, that is RDM (Radial Drilling machine) wherein the said slider is tied with the crane by belt or eye bolts and shackles;
- Arranging all required accessories for slider clamping on RDM wherein the necessary accessories includes clamping studs, bolts, washers, clamps, spacers, screw jacks, spirit level, etc.;
- Then loading the slider on RDM by crane adjustment (balance) by using the inputs of spirit level indicator;
- After proper balancing of the cam slider, the clamping activity is started to find the proper resting and machining surfaces as per slider's shapes and sizes for clamping; " *
- Then, the screw jacks or spabers are placed as per the height and length of the cam slider below the resting surfaces;
- After keeping the spacers or jacks and the clamping is done, the studs are positioned on RDM slots, place the clamps, washers, bolts and need to proceed for clamping;
- At the time of tightening of bolts, due care is required to be taken for spirit level balancing indicator. The sequence of bolt tightening followed is diagonal tightening of the bolts;
- During this whole operation care is required to be taken that at the time of clamping, the sliders and /or spacers do not skid through safety point of view and lead to the accident and human loss;
- After ensuring the proper clamping through this lengthy and time consuming process, crane is to be removed from slider to undertake the drilling activity.
Thus, this conventional method of setting up the cam sliders in sheet metal dies leads to the disadvantages as listed below.
- Setting time required for setting up the cam sliders is very high almost 3.5 to4hrs.
- Lot of NVAs (Non Value Adding Activities) are involved in the method.
- EOT Crane and drilling machine engagement time is very high.
- Lot of care required to be taken by the human operators during this lengthy and complex operation through safety point of view.
- Further, the whole operation is un-ergonomic and very difficult to clamp the slider.
To address all these disadvantages of the conventional method, the present invention is proposed which has various advantages and leads to reduction of setting up time drastically.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES:-
The objectives and advantages of the present invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of the invention taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 shows the layout of the conventional method of setting up cam slider in sheet metal dies.
Figure 2 shows one of the embodiments of the fixture for setting up cam slider in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 3 shows another embodiment of the fixture for setting up cam slider in accordance with the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT INVENTION:-
Referring to Figure 2, the fixture (10) is split up in two pieces for using variable lengths of various sliders. The said fixture is made from CI casting specifically from FG260. For this fixture, two angular surfaces (11 & 12) are provided. The angular surface (11) is at 50 degree angle and the other angular face (12) is 40 degree angle with the horizontal. For each fixture piece two clamping slots (13) are given diagonally for fixture clamping. Four vertical (14) ribs on each side and two angular ribs (15) are provided on the fixture to impart the required strength to the fixture during the operation. One centre key slot (16) is provided on the common base for loading the fixture on RDM on straight co-axial direction of both pieces. Few cores (17) are provided in the fixture in order to make it light weight. Two lifting points (18) are provided on the fixture to lift the said fixture. In between the both angular faces, an open core (19) is provided to avoid the fouling or excess material of sliders, if any. Weight of the said fixture is maintained such that a single human operator is able to lift the fixture in absence of the lifting crane. For future clamping provision if at the time of drilling sliders are not hold properly, then clamping positions are provided on each piece. The purpose of this fixture is drilling and tapping of gas springs mounting plates and
safety plates on cam sliders. The length of the fixture (10) is as per the drilling machine bed width required there for the operation.
Referring to Figure 3, which is another embodiment of the present invention, fixture (31) is split up in two pieces for using variable lengths of various sliders. For this fixture (31), two angular surfaces (32 & 33) are provided wherein the surface (32) is at 50 degree angle and another angular face (33) is at 90 degree angle. For the said fixture piece, two clamping slots (34) are given diagonally for fixture clamping. Three vertical (35) and two angular ribs (36) are provided for fixture strength purpose for each piece. One centre key slot (37) is given on the common base for loading the fixture on RDM on straight co-axial direction of both pieces. Some cores (38) are given for the fixture pieces the purpose of weight reduction. For lifting purpose of fixture two positions (39) are given on each piece. In between the both angular faces open core (40) is provided to avoid the fouling or excess material of sliders during the operation, if any. The length of the fixture (31) is as per the drilling machine bed width required there for the operation.
The method of setting up the cam sliders in sheet metal dies as per the present invention comprises the sequential steps of as given below.
- Load the both fixture pieces on'RDM of fixture (10 and/or 31) as used during the operation as per drilling activity to be done on the slider.
- Lifting the slider by using crane with the help of belt or eye bolts and shackles and put it in fixture pieces.
- Remove the crane after putting the sliders in fixtures pieces.
- Cross checking to be done by using the spirit level.
- After ensuring the desired set up, starting the drilling activity as per the requirement of the job.
The advantages derived out of the present invention are as under:
....
- Setting time required for setting up the cam sliders is reduced drastically
by 60%, that it takes only 1 hr as compared to the 3.5 to 4 hrs required in the conventional practice.
- All NVAs (Non Value Adding Activities) involved in the method are totally eliminated.
- The requirement of the EOT Crane and drilling machine engagement time is reduced drastically.
- The operation of setting is now simple, safe, ergonomic and user friendly.
It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited in its application to the details of the construction and to the arrangements of the components as mentioned in the above description or illustrated in the drawings. The invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced and carried out in various ways. Also, the terminologies used herein are for the purpose of description and should not be regarded as limiting.
