Abstract: A fluid mixer for mixing two fluid streams 40, 42 includes a set of main lobes 26 defining alternating primary and secondary main chutes 30, 32, one or more auxiliary lobes 28 intermediate two of the main lobes, and an auxiliary fluid capture duct 62. The auxiliary lobes are defined, at least in part, by the discharge end of the duct. In operation, the duct conveys secondary fluid to secondary chutes 36 defined by the lobes thereby improving the performance of the mixer despite the presence of an obstruction 18 that would otherwise impede through mixing of two fluid streams.
We Claim:-
1. A f1uid mixer comprising;
A set of main lobes defining alternating primary and sec o n d a r y chu t e s ;
one or more auxiliary lobes intermediate two of the main lobes; and
a duct, having an intake end and a discharge end wherein the auxiliary ' lobes are defined, at least in part, by the discharge end. of the duct.
2. The mixer of claim 1, wherein the intake end of the
duct projects into a secondary fluid stream.
3. The mixer of: claim 1 wherein the .main lobe a have a main lobe trailing edge, the auxiliary lobes have an auxiliary lobe trailing edge and the auxiliary trailing edge is no further forward than the main trailing, edge.
4. The mixer of claim 1 wherein the duct converges in area
in a downstream direction.
5. The mixer of claim 4 wherein the duct area converges by
about 20% from the intake end to the discharge end.
6. The mixer of claim 1 wherein at least the main lobes
have scalloped sidewalls.
7. The mixer of claim 1 wherein the duct has an intake
plane oriented at an offset angle.
8. The mixer of claim 1 wherein the offset single is
between about 0 and 25 degrees.
9. The mixture of claim I comprising exactly two ducts.
10. The mixture of claim 1 wherein each duct conveys secondary fluid to exactly one
secondary chute.
1 I. The mixture of claim 1 wherein the mixture is a component of a turbine engine, the primary fluid steam is a stream of relatiely hot products of compustion, and the secondary fluid stream is a stream of relatively cool bypass air.
12. The mixture of claim 1 wherein the mixer is a component of a turbine engine having
an obstruction spanning across the secondary fluid stream, and the auxiliary lobes are
circuit) feerentially aligned with the obstruction.
13. The mixture of claim 1 wherein the duct is an integral part of the mixture.
14. A fluid mixture, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the
accompanying drawings.
