The following specification particularly describes the nature of the invention:-
Description of Invention;
The Cost effective, Eco friendly Fly ash brick is an alternative to the conventional red clay brick, concrete blocks. This brick is produced by a unique combination of Cement, Flyash, Crushed sand, Accelerating Chemical Admixture and water. Various trials were conducted in different combinations. Mix design having 60 - 65% Flyash, 30 - 35% of Crushed sand and 5 - 8% of cement, 3 -4% of water and 1 - 2% of accelerator by weight was found to give exemplary results relating to lowering of thermal conductivity and creation of larger sized bricks.
All the ingredients - Fly ash, Crushed sand and cement and water with accelerating chemical admixture are accurately weighed individually in an electronic weighing scale. The weighed Flyash is placed in the Pan mixer first, followed by Cement, Crushed sand and water. The accelerator is added after 2 minutes of mixing to enable proper dispersion of mix and getting the required consistency. The ingredients are mixed for 15 - 20 min. to get a blended mixture. The capacity of the pan mixer used is 300 Kg. The blended mixture is then put in the moulds of 230mm x 150mm x 100mm and pressure of 150 psi is applied to compress the brick in the mould. The time cycle for making 1 brick is 40 seconds excluding mixing time. The resultant brick manufactured out of this process has
many unique properties like Very Low Thermal Conductivity, Very Low Water Absorption and Very High Compressive Strength which could not be obtained from a conventional red clay brick or a concrete block. The bricks are cured for min. 10 days and the brick is ready for use. The density of these bricks is around 1400 - 1700 Kg / cubic meter.
These low energy density building bricks can be used in the building envelope to obtain energy savings as it has very low thermal conductivity property and high Thermal Resistance (R Value). This brick is a cost effective solution when compared to the wall made with Conventional red-clay brick or Concrete blocks. This brick uses a very high percentage of the industrial by¬product, Flyash and manufactured in a eco-friendly manner. These bricks are neither heated at High temperatures in Kilns like a conventional red clay brick nor uses 100% cement as in the case of concrete blocks thereby reducing the Green House Gas emissions and making the whole process a Clean Technology. As the key ingredient is an industrial waste, the cost of bricks is very less than the conventional bricks.
The height of this brick is more than the conventional red clay bricks thereby it reduces the no. of bricks required for a particular area and reduces the no. of joints and hence there will be a reduction in consumption of cement mortar for the joints. This brick will have very smooth finish and very less water absorption capacity, because of which no plastering is required for the internal walls. This bricks when used for the wall construction makes the building energy efficient because of its very low thermal conductivity property. No extra insulation for wall is required for making the building as energy efficient. Also the density of the brick is less than the conventional Red clay brick or concrete blocks, thereby reducing the dead load of the structure. So the structural members like beams, columns thickness can be reduced and savings in reinforcement steel can be achieved in the structural design.
