Field of invention:

The invention relates to turbines, more particularly steam turbines, coupled directly onto to the shaft of an induction generator by means of an adapter shaft eliminating gearbox, resultant shafts, gears, bearings, speed governor, lube system and couplings.

State of the art in the field:

The conventional steam turbines hitherto consist of three main modules integrated to generate electrical power namely - Turbine, Gearbox, and Electrical Generator/Alternator. Along with the above, the following sub systems form part and parcel of any steam turbine generation system such as lubrication system comprising of oil pumps, oil cooler, oil filters etc., couplings between turbine and gear box, alternator and gearbox, speed governing system, base frames. Thereby, the conventional steam turbines, acquisize lot of subsystems, involve more cost and entails recurring expenditure on operation and maintenance, with increases in power loss through bearings and gear systems.

Therefore, there is a need for-a new form of steam turbine, which is cost effective,* compact in size, reduces expenditure in installation, and eliminates loss of mechanical power transmission.

Object of the Invention:
The present object of the invention is to provide a form of steam turbine with elimination of gearbox, resultant shafts, gears, bearings, speed governor, lube system and couplings. The another object of the invention is to provide a low cost, maintenance free steam turbine resulting in energy conservation, reduction in power transmission loss, and avoiding a number of installation of subsystems

statement of invention:
Accordingly the present invention provides a form of steam turbine by eliminating gearbox, resultant shafts, gears, bearings, speed governor, lube system and couplings.
Detailed description of the invention with reference to the drawing:

The turbine casing (03) mounted directly onto the generator frame (12), (foot cum flange of an Induction generator) eliminating gearbox, resultant shafts, gears, bearings, lube system and couplings. Adaptor shaft (02) is used for the dual purpose of coupling to the shaft of the induction generator and for mounting the turbine wheel (06).

The lock bolt (11) ensures secure fastening of the adaptor shaft (02) on to the generator shaft whereas the lock nut (10) secures the turbine wheel on to the adaptor shaft (02). The entire assembly of adaptor shaft (02), turbine wheel (06) with lock nut (10) forms an integral part of the generator rotor thus eliminating the use of couplings.

The turbine runs on generator bearings which are permanently grease lubricated, thus eliminating external bearings and lubrication system.
The turbine exhaust casing (04) is fastened to the flange of the steam casing (03) by means of a number of equi spaced bolts / studs.

The 'split Carbon rings' seal (08) is assembled to the flange of inlet casing (03) for almost 'Zero leakage' of steam from the system.

The entire assembly of turbine - generator system is mounted on a compact Mild steel base frame (01).

The elimination of sub-systems, bearings, couplings, gears, lubrication, and governor makes the turbine 'Low Cost' & compact.

Detailed Description of Drawing:
Fig -1 illustrates sectional view a steam turbine with elimination gearbox, resultant shafts, gears, bearings lubes system and couplings, with turbine base (1), adaptor shaft (2), inlet casing (3), exhaust casing (4), nozzle (5), crutis turbine(6), reversal segment (7), carbon seal (8), steam seal (9), lock nut (10), lock bolt (11), foot cum flange mounted generator (12).

Scope of the invention:

Although, the invention has been described with reference to specific embodiments, these descriptions are not meant to be construed in a limiting sense. Various modifications of the disclosed embodiments, as well as alternate embodiments of the invention will become apparent to persons skilled in the art upon reference to the description of the invention. It is therefore contemplated that such modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the present invention as defined.

We claim:

1. A form of steam turbine by eliminating gearbox, resultant shafts, gears, bearings, lube system, speed governing and couplings by mounting turbine casing (6) directly onto the generator frame by using a foot cum flange mounted induction generator (12) by means of adapter shaft (02).

2. A form of steam turbine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the speed of the turbine is held constantly by grid frequency.

3. A form of steam turbine as claimed in proceeding claims, wherein the 'split Carbon rings' seal (08) is assembled to the flange of inlet casing (03) for practically 'Zero leakage' of steam from the system.

4. A form of steam turbine as claimed in proceeding claims, wherein the elimination of gears, gearbox bearings reduces the power transmission loss and in turn increases the efficiency.

5. A form of steam turbine by eliminating gearbox, resultant shafts, gears, bearings, lube system, speed governing and couplings by mounting turbine casing (6) directly onto the generator frame by using a foot, cum flange mounted induction generator is thus illustrated herein above along with accompanying drawing.
