"Front bumper with air deflector for motor vehicle"
Mahindra & Mahindra Limited An Indian Company, R&D Center, Automotive Sector, 89, M.I.D.C.Satpur, Nashik-422 007, Maharashtra, India.
The following specification describes the nature of the invention
Field of Invention:
The present invention relates to front bumper for automotive vehicles. More particularly, the present invention relates front bumper with air deflector attached to the lower surface of the bumper for diverting the air flow towards the intercooler / engine compartment.
Background of the Present Invention:
Front bumper is the front-most part of an automotive vehicle designed to allow the car to sustain an impact without damage to the vehicle's frame or safety systems. It is also used to give aesthetic look to the vehicle and to hide the vehicle frame as well. In most of the bumpers it has netted grill or air scoops for the entry of air in the engine compartment.
Prior art discloses variety of front bumpers with its merits. PCT patent application No. WO.2007125237 and German patent No. FR.2899846 describes bumper skin fitted with air guide comprising at least one air guidance wall extending from an air intake area to a radiator of the vehicle. The wall includes an air discharge opening provided upstream from the radiator. But these patents doesn't update about diverting the air flow towards the engine compartment.
US patent application No. US.2008/0054677 talks about drag reducing vehicle attachment. The apparatus includes a deflector configured to divert air flow around a vehicle body. It is add on module type attachment on the front bumper and does not divert the air flow towards the engine compartment. Another US patent No. US.6874842 educates about air deflector attached to the lower surface of an automotive vehicle. Thus, none of the prior art concepts advocates about the concept of diverting the air flow towards the engine compartment.
Objectives of the Present Invention:
The main object of the present invention is to provide an improved front bumper with air deflector for an automotive vehicle which guides / diverts the air flow towards the intercooler / engine compartment.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel front bumper with air guide by overcoming the drawbacks of prior art concepts.
Description of the Figures:
The objectives, features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from the following description taken in connection with a accompanying drawing, wherein
Figure 1 shows the perspective view of a front bumper with air deflector in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 shows the cut view across A-A of a front bumper with air deflector in accordance with the present invention.
Detailed Description of the Present Invention:
Referring to figure 1, front bumper comprises of bumper fascia (1), upper reinforcement member (2), lower reinforcement member (3), netted grill (4), air deflector plate (5), reinforcement plate (6) and wing tie strap bracket (7). Bumper fascia (1) is made from metal or plastic material or combination of thereof fulfilling the requirement. Its main role is to impart aesthetic look to the vehicle. Upper reinforcement member (2), lower reinforcement member (3), reinforcement plate (6) and wing tie strap bracket is made of metal. In some cases it can be made from firber reinforced plastic material fulfilling the requirement of reinforcement. The reinforcement members are used to give strength and stiffness to the bumper structure. Netted grill (4) is made from plastic material. It can be made from metal for its combination with plastic material. The netted grill is used in the bumper for an easy entry of air in the engine compartment through its openings. Also it helps to reduce the air drag
of the vehicle, The air deflector (5) is typically a rigid panel made in the form plate from sheet metal. It can be made of plastic or its combination with sheet metal. It is fitted at the lower edge of the netted grill by welding its either ends to the reinforcement plate in a certain angular position. The angular position of the air deflector diverts the in-coming air flow towards the intercooler in the engine compartment. The fitting of the air deflector plate (5) with the reinforcement plates (6) can be done by welding, riveting, bolting or snap fit or with the help of suitable adhesive. Air deflector plate (5) has grooves on its either ends which help to adjust the angle of the deflector plate and thereby controlling the amount of air to be diverted towards the engine compartment
When the vehicle moves in forward direction, the air enters through the netted grill inside the bumper area. If no proper pathway is provided it gets dissipated there through the openings. The intercooler area where the sufficient air is required is away for the front bumper on upper side. Therefore, at the entry point of air, a deflector plate diverts the air upward side towards the intercooler area. The direction of air diversion can be changed as and when required by moving the deflector plate through its grooves over the reinforcement plate.
Advantages of the Present Invention:
• More air supply in the engine compartment is achieved.
• It is very easy to mount on the bumper and the amount of air to be diverted can be managed easily.
• It is low cost and easy to maintain.
• Angle of the air deflector plate can be changed as per the requirement of the air to be diverted.
• Air deflector plate does not hinder the appearance of the bumper or front structure of an automotive vehicle.
• Helps in reducing the lift at the front of the vehicle.
