Fused Alumina Based Abrasives With In Situ Formed Micro Reinforcements

Abstract: The present invention relates to fused alumina based abrasives having in-situ formed micro reinforcements with self-healing properties at high temperature, and a process for its preparation. In particular, the present invention provides fused alumina based abrasive materials, with alumina as the major phase, and titania, silica, chromia, iron, magnesia, calcia, soda as minor phases. The process involves melting the raw material in an electric arc furnace and cooling the molten mass which is further subjected to crushing and grading followed by thermal treatment to obtain the fused alumina based abrasive materials. The abrasive materials of the present invention can be used in abrasive applications. [Figure 1]
