Gas Turbine Engine Impeller With Improved Fatigue Life

Abstract: Abstract The centrifugal impeller is a critical and life limited component in gas turbine engine. The life of the impeller is determined by the fatigue cycles it undergoes. It is desirable to have improved fatigue life of the impeller to reduce the maintenance cost and increase the time between overhaul of engine. The impeller life is dependents on material, geometry and loads. The critical areas which limit the impeller fatigue life are blade root (6) and disc bore (9). The invention is an advanced impeller having geometrical features at bore region and blade region. Blade inclination angle (5), blade root geometry (6) and bore region (9) was optimized to minimize the inertia load and blade bending loads resulting in improve fatigue life at the same time reduce the mass of the impeller.

Specification

We Claim,
1. A centrifugal impeller designed with advanced geometrical features to improve the fatigue life and to optimise weight and inertia comprising:
the blade inclination angle in the direction of rotation of the impeller;
the blade root taper and fillet;
the unique geometry of the bore section; and
the slope angle and length at the bore for inertia and weight
optimization.
2. The centrifugal impeller as claimed in claim 1, wherein the blade at the exit section is inclined in the direction of rotation and the blade section is provided with taper having thicker section at the blade root.
3. The centrifugal impeller as claimed in claim 1, wherein the geometry of the bore region is formed by removal of metal with an angle as described and referred in the detail description.
