SUMMARY:
This invention discloses gel composition and method for preparing the composition that can be used to seal tire puncture. The composition is stable at a wide range of temperature and pressure and maintained at Ph 8-10. This gel composition disclosed in the invention compose mainly of filler material, liquid carrying agents and corrosion inhibitors to prevent rusting of the tire valves, and contains preservatives to maintain the stability of the composition. Further plasticizers and stabilizers are added to provide consistency and stability to the composition. This composition seals the puncture within few seconds and remains intact till the life of the tire with maximum no of sealed punctures.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
The prior art has proposed various sealant materials for sealing tires. Most of these are intended as an emergency measure, to be injected into the tire through the valve stem after a puncture occurs, and do not remain active for extended periods of time after placement in the tire. Known compositions include water-based latexes, which are effective for only a short time, because they dry by evaporation and coagulation, leaving a rubbery mass. Another known type of tire sealant employs a solution of sodium silicate or similar materials which dry to form a sealing plug. Solutions of dextrin and similar organic gums have also been used. All of these compositions have the shortcoming that they dry after a relatively short period of time, and therefore cannot be used for permanent or long-term protection from punctures, but rather are normally applied after a puncture occurs.
Automotive tire sealant and/or ballasting compositions typically have a high apparent viscosity due to the need to resist escaping air and the need to provide a balanced uniform thickness of sealant on the tire wall where punctures occur. Kent et al, U.S. Pat. No. 4,101,494, teaches a ballasting composition having an apparent viscosity of from 1000 to 2200 centipoise at 100° F. This ballasting composition contains asbestos fibers and a polyvinyl alcohol, as well as an optional ethylene glycol antifreeze portion. Tibbals, U.S. Pat. No. 3,747,660, teaches a thixotropic tire ballasting composition that consists essentially of a gel-forming clay and an alkali metal Hexametaphosphate. Kitamura et al, U.S. Pat. No. 4,607,065, teaches a sealant composition including butyl rubber, a tackifier, an acrylol or methacrylol group-containing a polymerization unsaturated compound, a filler, and a photo polymerization initiator. The filler may include glass fibers, clay, and silica. These high-viscosity compositions are useful in tubeless automotive tires, which operate at elevated temperatures resulting from high rpm and frictional contact with the pavement. A major problem exists with these compositions in that they contain ingredients which are potentially very hazardous to human health. Additionally, the butyl rubber-containing sealants are typically sprayed into a fixed position on the outer tire wall, but inner tubes cannot receive the sealants in this manner.
A commercially available viscous-fiber tire sealant composition, SLIME1 from Access Marketing of Shell Beach, Calif., contains propylene glycol, man-made fibers, a corrosion inhibitor, and a biocide. These ingredients are typical of most commercially available fibrous bicycle tire sealants. This liquid composition is sold as a bicycle tire sealant, and is pumped into tires through a Schrader-type valve stem opening; however, the composition usually clogs the Presta-type valve cores and, as a practical matter, cannot be used to seal inner tubes having these types of valve cores. Furthermore, the mixture fails to seal many types of punctures in an instantaneous manner, and significant pressure drops are often observed after the puncture occurs. While the fibrous mixture has a lower apparent viscosity than do the automotive sealants and ballasting compositions that are discussed above, the apparent viscosity is still relatively high.
There remains a need for an environmentally compatible sealant composition that is effective for sealing tire and inner tube punctures without significant pressure loss and providing no damage to the valves.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
A tire sealant composition according to the present invention consists of at least a kind of naturally derived materials. The material is partly converted to be flexible and soft suspended material by physical or chemical method. Additional solid rigid particles can also be added to improve the sealing performance. The liquid medium of the sealant is composed of water and liquid latex and anti-freezing agents like propylene glycol, glycerin which widens the operating temperature of the sealant. Tackifier is added for both increasing the viscosity of the solution and improving the tack of the rigid and flexible suspended solid to the puncture wall.
Anti-corrosion additive like Benzotriazole can be added to inhibit corrosion. Preservatives may also be added to extend the shelf life of the sealant.
Other additives such as odorant and coloring agent may be added optionally.
The viscosity of the aqueous suspension is adjusted by adding tackifier namely sodium silicate and high viscosity grade of methyl ethyl hydroxyl ethyl cellulose. These tackifier are used to tune the viscosity is aqueous solution effectively. The freezing point of the aqueous suspension is depressed by the use of anti-freezing agent, such as propylene glycol, to broaden the applicability of the sealant composition.
Further comprising filler material like natural gum and rubber crumb and contains fiber which is non-toxic in nature that connects the sealant and also contains propylene acetate. The fiber can be selected from polyolefin fiber, ceramic fiber, and cellulosic fiber. The gel composition is stable and maintained at PH 8-10 and is non-hydrous and biodegradable.
The gel composition functions by plugging the puncture with rigid particles together, clogging flexible gel particles in between the rigid particle boundary to strengthen the sealing ability and duration, thus sealing the puncture within few seconds. It is a valve-through type of sealant and can also be applied manually to the tire surface. The gel composition seals the puncture of about 2mm-3mm depth and remains intact till the life of the tire with maximum no of sealed punctures
The gel composition works at a range of -20 to +120 degree Celsius.
The gel/sealant composition does not contain any ammonia and/or toxic substances.
The method of preparation of the gel involves
Step 1 involves mixing water and fiber 400 followed by propylene glycol and glycerol and stirred at 1500-2000 rpm.
STEP 2 involves addition of liquid latex fillers is carried following additives.
Addition of fillers include addition of rubber crumb in order, first 20 mesh rubber crumb is followed by 40 mesh for sealant composition which is meant for conventional tires specifically for four wheeler vehicles.
Addition of fillers include addition of rubber crumb in order, first 40 mesh rubber crumb is followed by 20 mesh for sealant composition which is meant for conventional tires specifically for two wheeler vehicles.
