Gender Identifying Process In Plants Nutmeg

Abstract: The present invention relates to a unique process of identifying the gender ( sex determination) of Nutmeg Plants - by a chemical solution which is rather less expensive than the present method of identification of gender ( sex determination in plants) by adopting the polymerized chain reaction -PCR based seedling sex diagnostic assay(SSDA) . This PCR based gender identification is carried out by the study of DNA. This method adopted to identify the gender of each sapling is highly expensive and beyond the reach of die common man . where as the new method invented by the inventor is quite user fiiendly and is very much with in the reach of the ordinary farmer.

Field of Invention
The present invention relates to a unique process of identifying the gender of Nutmeg Plants -which is rather less expensive than the present method of identification ofgender( sex determination in plants) by adopting the polymerized chain reaction -PCR based seedling sex diagnostic assay(SSDA) . This PCR based gender identification is carried out by the study of DNA. This method adopted to identify the gender of each sapling is highly expensive and beyond the reach of the common man . where as the new method invented by the inventor is quite user friendly and is very much with in the reach of the ordinary fanner.
BACK GROUND OF THE INVENTION
The nut meg - a cash crop grown in tropical climate is a hard aromatic seed obtained from fruit of evergreen Indian tree used as spice and in medicine .The nut meg plant falls under the dioecious variety . Dioecious is a situation where the male and female flowers are borne on separate plants This is a peculiar situation where in the farmers engaged in nut meg cultivation is in darkness about the gender of the plant at the time of planting the sapling .
Therefore the major problem faced by farmers are to identify the sex of sapling at an early stage so that they can cultivate in their land a sufficiently large number of productive female nut meg trees with only a minimal number ofmale nut meg trees .

In spite of various experiments and attempts made to identify the sex of the dioecious species at an early stage , the results were not satisfactory or has not found a result for the same . Though there have been serious efforts to understand the genetic basis of sex determination in plants and to develop methods to identify sex at an early stage, one method is by using molecular marker tools
Under this method of molecular markings , an attempt to identify the sex- specific DNA marking in nutmeg was carried out . But the said process is time consuming and the same is not viable and therefore not affordable to ordinary fanners who ventured into nut meg cultivation with the hope of cashing in some additional income by way of planting nut meg either at their farm land or in their premises .
To be specific , the farmers who ventured into nut meg cultivation could identify the male and female characteristics of each plant only after a period of 7 to 9 years. And there arises the trauma of wastage money , hard work, labour, energy etc.
On identifying the characteristic of nut meg plants after a period of 7 to 9 years , and on finding that the majority of plants are males , the next option available to the farmer is to adopt the method of budding . This is carried out by taking a tissue from the female plant and is systematically joined with the male plant .Though this method is quite useful, again the farmer has to wait for a long period of 3 to 4 years to get the result and yield . There is also a possibility of not getting the desired result in budding .

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The objective of the present invention is to provide a inexpensive method to identify the gender of the nut meg plants . In dioecious plants, male and female flowers are developed in separate plants .So the major aim is to identify the male and female plants This is not known by checking the saplings of the nut meg plants . To have a successful nut meg cultivation, and to make the cultivation profitable, it is necessary to grow more female plants with one or two males.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION To identify the gender of nut meg plants , following chemical solution has to be made Step 1
Take 2 ml of 5% sodium carbonate solution in a 5ml glass bottle. Step 2
Add 3 drops of nut meg sap obtained from the nut meg sappling leaf Step 3
Add 1 drop of ethyl alcohol (dispensing alcohol) 90% Step 4
Shake gently for 5 minutes
On shaking the solution for 5 minutes , the solution becomes deep amber coloured with a saffron coloured precipitate at the bottom .

The above reaction is seen in both male and female plants .But in female plants, the reaction takes place in a faster pace and the colour of the solution is darker than the solution obtained in male plants .
Therefore by using this sodium carbonate solution , and on finding the reaction and changes in colour of the solution the gender of the nut meg plants can be easily identified.
This process have been tested and tried for the last few years and is done several times using double blind method and no mistake was found in identifying the male and female nut meg plants.
Description of the Accompanying Photograph
The accompanying photograph depicts the reaction occurred while adding tile sap of the nut meg plants
The dark amber colour and dark saffron colour precipitate solution bottle is identified as the sap of female nut meg plant
The light amber colour and light saffron colour precipitate solution bottie is identified as the sap of male plants

I claim
1. A method or process to identify the gender (sex) of the nut meg plant which is a cash crop
2. The process of making the solution for identifying the male and female characteristics of nut meg plant
Step 1
Take 2 ml of 5% sodium carbonate solution in a 5ml glass bottle. Step 2
Add 3 drops of nut meg sap obtained from the nut meg sappling leaf
Step 3
Add 1 drop of ethyl alcohol (dispensing alcohol) 90%
Step 4
Shake gently for 5 minutes
3. On shaking the solution gently as claimed in claim 2 , the colour of the solution turns dark as depicted in die diagram/ photograph identifying it as female nutmeg plant

4. On shaking the solution gently as claimed in claim 2 , the colour of the solution turns lighter amber colour and lighter saffron colour precipitate as depicted in the diagram/photograph identifying it as male nut meg plant.
5. On adding the sap of the nut meg plants as mentioned in step
2 of claim 2 the reaction is very stronger and faster in the
case of female
6. On adding the sap of the nut meg plants as mentioned in step
2 of claim 2 the reaction is lighter and slow in the case of
male plants
7. This method or process as claimed in claim 1 is less expensive
and user friendly and can be tested by the farmers themselves
than the present methods of identification of gender ( sex
determination in plants) by adopting the polymerized chain
reaction -PCR based seedling sex diagnostic assay(SSDA)
and by sex -specific DNA marking technique
