Abstract: In manufacturing and metrology geometrical parameters play a vital role in context to component’s form, fit and function. Checking of these geometrical parameters employs several sophisticated and expensive measuring equipments. A few measuring equipments after completing their service life fall into the category of BEYOND ECONOMICAL REPAIR, however there is always some scope of using their functional parts. In this line of thinking an old roundness checking machine is utilized to check geometrical parameters like Concentricity, Run-out, parallelism on circular track and perpendicularity, using its functional components viz. arm, column, adjustment screws and a DTI.The test piece mounted on rotary table is rotated manually and a DTI is employed to check geometrical parameters viz. Concentricity, Run-out, parallelism on circular track and perpendicularity.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The mentioned invention is in the field of Mechanical Metrology involving critical
geometrical parameters like Concentricity, Run‐out, parallelism on circular track and
perpendicularity.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Manufacturing inspection facility is equipped with several sophisticated
measuring equipments which are unique as well as expensive. When their repair is not
economical, a few of their accessories, attachments, structure etc. can still be used for
inspection after a few alteration/modifications. This saves cost involved in the
procurement of additional inspection facilities.
The present invention is based on the utilization of functional components of an
old roundness checking machine to check geometrical parameters as mentioned above,
which otherwise require sophisticated measuring equipment.
SUMMARY OF PRESENT INVENTION
Present invention is used for checking critical geometrical parameters with regard to
following aspects:
1. One aspect of present invention is that it can be used to check concentricity.
2. Second aspect is it can be used to check run‐out.
3. Another aspect is it can be used to check parallelism on circular track.
4. Yet another aspect is it can be used to check perpendicularity.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Roundness checking machine is sophisticated equipment which is used to check
geometrical parameters of test pieces. This equipment has several attachments and
accessories which can be used alternatively also together with some other equipment to
check the geometrical parameters. Our present invention is conceived using its rotary
table, arm, column, base etc. together with a Dial Test Indicator (DTI) to check
geometrical parameters in a simple yet precise manner.
The setup/invention comprises of:
1. A radial arm, 102, which can translate in horizontal as well as vertical direction
2. Vertical column, 101, which comprises of a scale for linear measurement.
3. Rotary table, 104, which can rotate about its axis
4. DTI, 103, measures the deviation
5. Adjusting screws, 105 are used for leveling as well as centering of test piece.
6. Base, 106 is rigid and vibration resistant which ensures accurate and precise
measurement.
The test piece is mounted on rotary table (104) and DTI (103) is clamped on the radial
arm. The DTI (103) is adjusted on the surface on which geometrical parameters are to be
checked and the rotary table (104) is rotated. The deviation/deflection on DTI (103) is
used to determine the value of geometrical parameter in microns. (Refer figure A)

5. The present invention as per claim 1, checks perpendicularity.
