Gesture Detection System for Protection and Control Unit of Switching
Device
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a protection and control unit of a switching device, and more particularly, the present invention relates to a gesture detection system for protection and control unit of the switching device used for parameterization and/or menu navigation through gesture detection.
Background of the invention
A protection and control unit along with the switching device is used for isolating an electrical circuit .from faults. In addition, the protection and control unit also measures magnitude of electrical parameters such as current, voltage and displays it through an output console preferably an LCD or OLED screen. Such protection and control unit with display have several menus which have to be accessed through push buttons, overlays and the like. Though for these menus, a user sets values for fault levels upon which the protection function depends. Thus, when the switching device is connected to a live system, the user has to physically touch the protection and control unit for doing settings of the switching device, which may pose danger.
Accordingly, there exists a need to eliminate physical contact between the user and the switching device, and provide a system which overcomes the abovementioned drawbacks.
Object of the invention

Object of the present invention is to eliminate physical contact between the user and the switching device.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an alternate way for menu navigation and parameterization through gesture detection in protection and control unit of the switching device
Summary of the invention
Accordingly, the present invention provides a gesture detection system for parameterization and/or menu navigation for protection and control unit of a switching device. The gesture detection system includes a microcontroller configured in a protection and control unit. The microcontroller includes a plurality of gesture images stored therein, wherein each gesture image of the plurality of gesture images corresponds to a predefined task to be performed by the microcontroller. The gesture detection system further includes an image sensor connected to the microcontroller. The image sensor is capable of capturing image of hands of the user in order to identify the gesture.
When the user brings his hand in front of the image sensor, the image sensor recognizes the gesture image and compares the gesture image with one of the gesture image of the plurality of gesture images stored in the microcontroller. If matched with a particular gesture image present in the microcontroller, then the corresponding task assigned to the microcontroller is performed.
Brief description of drawings
FIG. 1 shows a block diagram of a protection and control unit with gesture recognition system in accordance with the present invention;

FIG. 2 shows an example of a plurality of gestures used for menu navigation in accordance with the present invention.
Detailed description of the invention
The foregoing objects of the present invention are accomplished and the problems and shortcomings associated with the prior art, techniques and approaches are overcome by the present invention as described below in the preferred embodiments.
The present invention provides a gesture detecting system for protection and control unit of a switching device that avoids any physical contact between a user and the switching device. The protection and control unit of the switching device of the present invention is used for parameterization and/or menu navigation through gesture detection.
Referring to figure 1, a block diagram of a gesture detecting system [100) for protection and control unit (200) of a switching device is shown in accordance with the present invention. The gesture detection system (100) provides for parameterization and/or menu navigation for protection and control unit of the switching device (not shown). The protection and control unit (200) includes an output console (110) displaying electrical parameters, a current transformer (115), a signal conditioning module (120), a test kit interface (125), and a flux shift device (130). The gesture detection system (100) includes a microcontroller (50) and an image sensor (60).
The microcontroller (50) is configured in the protection and control unit (200). The microcontroller (50) includes a plurality of gesture images (70) stored therein. The gestures images (70) are stored in a memory device of microcontroller (50). In an embodiment, the memory device is any one of a

ferroelectric random-access memory (FRAM) and a static random-access memory (SRAM). Each gesture image of the plurality of gesture images (70) corresponds to a predefined task to be performed by the microcontroller (50). For example, the plurality of gesture images (70) stored in the microcontroller (50) comprises images corresponding to up (70a), down (70b), right (70c), left (70d), enter (70e), and escape action (70f) as shown in Figure2. Figure 2 shows images of the plurality of gestures (70) used for menu navigation in protection and control unit (200) in accordance with the present invention. Each image of the plurality of images (70) corresponds to a specific activity to be performed by the microcontroller. For example, with gesture (70a) effective pressing of one key, like "Enter" key, would happen and corresponding action would take place. Each gesture corresponds to individual key pressing. Also each gesture would even serve as short cut key for easy navigation. For example, the gesture (70e) would mean go to default screen and so on.
The gesture detecting system (100) further includes the image sensor (60) connected to the microcontroller (50). The image sensor (60) is capable of capturing image of hands of the user in order to identify the gesture. In an embodiment, the image sensor (60) is a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor.
During operation, when the user brings his hand in front of the image sensor (60), the image sensor (60) recognizes the gesture image and compares recognized the gesture image with one of the gesture image of the plurality of gesture images (70) stored in the microcontroller (50). The analog output of the image sensor (60) is digitized by sampling. The captured image from the image sensor (60) is then recreated pixel by pixel by the microcontroller. The recreated image is then compared with the pre-stored image.

If matched with a particular gesture image present in the microcontroller (50), then the corresponding task assigned to the microcontroller (50) is performed.
Using the gesture detection system (100), the user is able to navigate the menu and set the parameters of the release of microcontroller of the switching device without any physical contact. In an embodiment, the gesture detection system (100) is used for providing a locking feature to the switching device. For example, a particular gesture is used to lock the protection and control unit (200) as a security measure, which can help to provide control access to the switching device.
Advantages of the invention
1. The gesture detection system (100) helps in parameterization or menu navigation of protection and control unit (200) through detecting hand gestures of the user.
2. The switching device is operated using gestures as interface, using the gesture detection system (100).
3. The gesture detection system (100) control access to the switching device for security measure.
The foregoing descriptions of specific embodiments of the present invention have been presented for purposes of illustration and description. They are not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the present invention to the precise forms disclosed, and obviously many modifications and variations are possible in light of the above teaching. The embodiments were chosen and described in order to best explain the principles of the present invention and its practical application, and to thereby enable others skilled in the art to best utilize the present invention and various embodiments with various
