A method for growing neural precursor cells from the umbilical cord blood fortherapeutic purposes, comprising the steps of:i. Isolating the stem cell and progenitor cell population from mononuclear cellsseparated from umbilical cord blood, using a magnetic cell separator toseparate out cells which contain a CD marker; ii. Culturing the stem cell and progenitor cell population of step 1 in a culturevessel, using neural proliferation medium containing cord blood serum in aCO2 incubator; iii. Feeding the cultures of step (ii) every 3-4 days and allowing them to proceedto 90% confluency; iv. Detaching the adherent cells attached to the culture vessel using celldissociation buffer or trypsin EDTA or any such dissociation agent andseeding into the next passage; v. Characterizing the cultured cells of step (iv) by taking cell counts andanalysing these cells for the expression of CD 133, CD45 and CD34 markers;vi. Transdifferentiating the cultured cells of step (iv), by culturing in adifferentiation media; vii. Replating these cells in 6 well chamber slides and inducing with BHA forabout 5 hrs in the absence of serum, staining the induced cells with antibodiesagainst neural markers like Nestin, Glial Fibrillar Acidic Protein (GFAP) &Neurofilament N (Neu-N) and analysing by immunofluorescence..
