Specification

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
To 5 check the complete health of DiskOnChip used for storing data.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The DiskOnChip is a flash memory device used for storing discrete data. It
10 provides a small, single-chip, solid-state flash disk in a standard 32-pin DIP package.
Combining a disk controller with flash memory on a single chip, it is the solution where
minimal weight, space, and power consumption are essential. DiskOnChip is used in a
wide range of products, such as information appliances, set-top boxes, thin clients, thin
servers, network computers, and embedded, portable computers, Flight Data Recorders
15 etc for storing data. Health Monitoring System is designed to check the health of
DiskOnChip as a whole and also health of the flash ICs residing in it, before and after
using in any application.
SUMMARY OF PRESENT INVENTION
20 For verifying the health of the DiskOnChip and associated electronic circuitry
this system is designed. Health Monitoring System consists of a mother board and a
daughter board used for interconnection with PC-104 which is interfaced with memory
chips. It also has display devices for displaying various results.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
5 Referring Fig.1, Fig2 & Fig3.
The DiskOnChip is a flash memory device used for storing discrete data. It provides a
small, single-chip, solid-state flash disk in a standard 32-pin DIP package. It consists of a
no of flash chips residing inside it. It consists of following blocks:
10 System Interface (1) provides an easy-to-integrate interface to DiskOnChip, enabling it to
interface with various CPU interfaces. Boot Block (2) is responsible for answering the
BIOS expansion search in PC architectures. Error Detection and Error Correction Code (3)
used for on-the-fly error handling. Flash Control block (4) contains registers responsible for
transferring the address, data and control information.
15
As explained earlier DOC is used for storing discrete data for various applications. Hence
it is very important to check the serviceability of DOC before, in between and after any
use. Health monitoring system is designed to ensure the health of the DOC. This system
determines how many chips inside the DOC are faulty and on the basis of the size the
20 total faulty area and healthy area of the DOC. This system consists of a mother board and
a daughter board and a display system for displaying the output of the testing.
A typical block diagram of Health Monitoring System is shown in figure 2.For checking
health of DOC there is a provision of test PCB (5) which is used to connect the DOC to
25 daughter board (6). This daughter board is designed to interact with the Mother board (7)
and Test PCB (5). Mother board (7) is a compact, full-featured PC compatible Single
Board Computer. Display (8) is used to displays various result.
As depicted in figure 3 the Health Monitoring System follows a process given below
30
• System boot up process
• Start system initialization
• Read the device ID of the memory chips
• Detect the number of chips present
35 • Size of each memory device
• Total size and number of chips present
• Display result

Claims:Accordingly, the description of the present invention is to be considered as illustrative only and is for the purpose of teaching those skilled in the art of the best mode of carrying out the invention. The details may be varied substantially without departing from the spirit of the invention, and exclusive use of all modifications which are within the scope of the appended claims is reserved. We Claim

1. It can read the device ID of the DOC
2. It can detect the number of flash present in DOC
3. It can check Size of each flash in side DOC
4. Total size and number of chips present in DOC
5. Maintenance and repair as well as installation are easy.
