Specification

DESC:HEIGHT ADJUSTABLE SHOCK ABSORBER

Field of the invention:

The present invention relates to a suspension assembly of vehicles and more particularly, to aheight adjustable shock absorber.

Background of the invention:

Normally, the motor cycle shock absorbers are built with an option of spring pre-compression adjustment. This will be set depending up on the number of riders and / or weight of the rider, which helps in ride comfort to the requirement. This option is a common feature in the motorcycles of any configuration whether it is twin shock absorber mounted or mono shock absorber mounted.

The drawback of the present shock absorbers is that they give only a spring pre-compression adjustment. But this does affect the spring rating performance and stroke of the suspension.

Accordingly, there exists a need to provide aheight adjustable shock absorberfor asuspension assembly of amotor vehicle that overcome the drawbacks in the prior art.

Object of the invention:

An object of the present invention is to provide aheight adjustable shock absorberfora suspension assembly of a motor vehicle that easily changes the ride height by keeping the original damping and spring pre-compression parameters un-affected.

Summary of the invention:
Accordingly, the present invention provides a height adjustable shock absorber.Theheight adjustable shock absorber includes a lower mount and a height adjustment assembly. The height adjustment assembly includes an extension rod, an adjuster nut and a lock nut.

The extension rod is fixed on the lower mount on an end thereof. The extension rod includes a scale configured thereon. The extension rod houses an adjustable graduated shaft that moves and locks to a required distance. The adjuster nut is locked with a piston rod. The adjuster nut holds another end of the extension rod. The adjuster nut rotates in any one of a clockwise direction and an anti-clockwise direction thereby releasing the extension rod up and down to provide a necessary height requirement. The lock nut tight fixes the extension rod on the adjuster nut.
The length of the extension rod coming out of the adjuster nut extends the length of the shock absorber to provide the necessary ride height.

The height adjustment assembly is placed at the lower mount of the shock absorber. Alternatively, the height adjustment assembly is provided at an upper end of the shock absorber. The height adjustable shock absorber easily changes the ride height by keeping the original damping and spring pre-compression parameters un-affected.

Brief description of the drawings:

The objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent when the disclosure is read in conjunction with the following figures, wherein
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of alower mount of a height adjustable shock absorber, in accordance with the present invention; and

Figure 2 shows a cutaway view of theheight adjustable shock absorber, in accordance with the present invention.

Detailed description of the invention:

The foregoing objects of the invention are accomplished and the problems and shortcomings associated with prior art techniques and approaches are overcome by the present invention described in the present embodiments.

The present invention provides aheight adjustable shock absorber for a suspension assembly of a motor vehicle. The shock absorber includes a height adjustment assembly thatfacilitates the rider to change the bike height and rider seat height by simply adjusting the shock absorber without affecting the normal functioning of the suspension assembly.

The present invention is illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings, throughout which reference numbers indicate corresponding parts in the various figures. These reference numbers are shown in bracket in the following description and in the table below.

Table:
Parts Number Parts Name
100 Shock absorber
10 Height adjustment assembly
11 Lower mount
12 Lock nut
13 Adjuster nut
14 Spring
15 Extension rod
16 Piston rod

Referring to figures 1 and 2, a height adjustable shock absorber (100) (herein after referred to as “the shock absorber (100)”)in accordance with the present invention is shown. The shock absorber (100) comprises a height adjustment assembly (10), a lower mount (11),a spring (14) and apiston (not shown).

The height adjustment assembly (10) is placed at the lower mount (11) of the shock absorber (100). In an alternative embodiment, the height adjustment assembly (10) is provided at an upper end of the shock absorber (100).

The height adjustment assembly (10) includes a lock nut (12), an adjuster nut (13) and anextension rod (15).The adjuster nut (13) is locked with a piston rod (16). The adjuster nut (13) is capable of rotating in any one of a clockwise direction and an anti-clockwise direction.

The extension rod (15) is fixedbetween the adjuster nut (13) and the lower mount(11) of the shock absorber (100).Specifically, the extension rod (15) is fixed on the lower mount (11) on an end thereof and another end of the extension rod is hold by the adjuster nut (13). The lock nut (12) tight fixes the extension rod (15) on the adjuster nut (13). The extension rod (15) includes a scale configured thereon. The extension rod(15) houses an adjustable graduated shaft (not shown) thatis moved and locked to a required distance.

Again referring to figures 1 to 2, in an operation of the height adjustment assembly (10)of the shock absorber (100), the height adjustments in the shock absorber (100) is done by placing the lock nut (12) according to the height requirement and releasingthe extension rod(15) up and down by swiveling the adjuster nut (13) in the clockwise and the anti-clockwise directions. The length of the extension rod (15) coming out of the adjuster nut (13) extends the length of the shock absorber (100) to provide the necessary ride height.

Accordingly the shock absorber height is adjusted by rotating the adjuster nut (13) in the clockwise and the anti-clock wise directions to release the extension rod (15) that provides the necessary height requirement.

The extension rod (10) installed in a mono shock absorber motorcycle helps in height adjustment by each millimeter. The values entered in the scale of the extension rod(15) helps to adjust the height of atwin shock absorber motorcycle on both the sides evenly.

Advantages of the invention:

1. The height adjustable assembly (10) requires a very less timeto finalize the bike height and rider seat height in concept stage.
2. The ride height is altered by simply adjusting the shock absorber (100) of the motor vehicle for better ride comfort.
3. The height adjustable assembly (10) helps to increase the seat height and clearance between wheel and mudguard without changing the spring pre-load and stroke.
4. The values entered in the scale of the extension rod(15) helps to adjust the height of thetwin shock absorber motorcycle evenly to both left and right hand side.
5. For mono shock absorber motorcycle, the extension rod(15) helps in height adjustment by each millimeter.

The foregoing descriptions of specific embodiments of the present invention have been presented for purposes of illustration and description. They are not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the present invention to the precise forms disclosed, and obviously many modifications and variations are possible in light of the above teaching. The embodiments were chosen and described in order to best explain the principles of the present invention and its practical application, and to thereby enable others skilled in the art to best utilize the present invention and various embodiments with various modifications as are suited to the particular use contemplated. It is understood that various omissions and substitutions of equivalents are contemplated as circumstances may suggest or render expedient, but such omissions and substitutions are intended to cover the application or implementation without departing from the scope of the claims of the present invention.
