Abstract: The present invention provides a herbal composition for sleep apnea and method of preparing the same. The composition comprises of Jufa flower (Hyssopus officinalis), Gaojaban flower (Borago officinalis), Gaojaban leaves, Khatmi seeds (Althaea officinalis), Billilotan whole plant (Melissa parviflora), Kaddu kernel cake (Cucurbita maxima), Badam kernel cake (Prunus amygdalus), Lasoda fruit (Cordia latifolia), Behidana seeds (Pyrus cydonia) and Mulethi root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) in appropriate proportions to form a medicament. The composition consists of various components extracted from plants, dried and ground to powdered form.
The present invention relates to the field of herbal medicinal compositions. More particularly,
the invention relates to a herbal formulation for curing sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Sleep Apnea is a very well-known sleep disturbance problem leading to other health problems
resulting in prolonged sleep disturbance and deprivation. Sleep Apnea is marked by pauses in
breathing (or shallow breaths) while sleeping. Sleep apnea may be obstructive sleep apnea,
central sleep apnea or mixed/complex sleep apnea. In people with obstructive sleep apnea (the
most common form of sleep apnea), airflow to the lungs is blocked because the airway
collapses or is obstructed during sleep. Central sleep apnea (CSA) occurs when the brain does
not send signals to the body to breathe regularly during sleep, causing breaks in breathing.3
This can also manifest as very shallow breathing. Mixed or complex sleep apnea includes
symptoms of both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. The sufferers of sleep apnea
may also experience obesity, snoring, nausea, tiredness, daytime sleepiness, depression,
hypertension, dementia, hyperactivity, menopause etc. The most common type of sleep apnea
is obstructive sleep apnea which is seen in maximum sufferers.
Adam Benjafield et al. in his study (Lancet Respir Med 2019, Published Online July 9, 2019),
estimated that 936 million (95% CI 903–970) adults aged 30–69 years (men and women) have
mild to severe obstructive sleep apnea and 425 million (399–450) adults aged 30–69 years have
moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea globally. As per said study, the number of affected
individuals was highest in China, followed by the USA, Brazil, and India. The problem is also
persistent in children and people living in urban cities.
Several machines help obstructive sleep apnea patients to sleep normally, but they do not
provide significant relief or cure to the problem. Instead, they are majorly related to treatment
of one or more of the symptoms of sleep apnea. The known treatments for sleep apnea include
use of implants such as hypoglossal nerve stimulator, surgical procedures such as somnoplasty,
tonsillectomy, Mandibular/maxillary advancement surgery etc. or mechanical therapy by use
of devices like positive air pressure devices, facial interfaces, adaptive servo-ventilation
instruments, oxygen concentrators and oral appliances. However, these treatments are just
supportive care methods, or may be invasive methods with one or more side effects.
3
Few formulations are known in the prior art for treating one or more problems associated with
sleep apnea. Allopathic compositions known in the art suffer from various side-effects.
WO2013173317A1 discloses methods, kits, and compositions for treating obstructive sleep
apnea with one or more α2-adrenergic agonist (e.g., dexmedetomidine). KR20200115598A
provides compositions and methods for treating sleep apnea comprising administering a
pharmaceutical composition comprising (R)-oxybutynin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor
(NRI) and (R)-oxybutynin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (NRI).
CN102091195B discloses a medicament for treating snore and sleep apnea syndrome
comprising 4-8 parts of liquorice, 10-20 parts of crude white atractylodes rhizome, 25-35 parts
of rhizoma alismatis, 25-35 parts of tuckahoe, 10-20 parts of red sage root, 7-13 parts of radix
linderae, 25-35 parts of oyster, 25-35 parts of clematis root and 25-35 parts of radix platycodi.
CN108853323A discloses a traditional Chinese medicinal composition for treating adenoid
hypertrophy accompanied by nasal congestion, snoring, open-mouth breathing, obstructive
sleep apnea and palatal tonsil enlargement. The composition comprises of 2 to 8 parts of
scorpio, 5 to 15 parts of bombyx batryticatus, 5 to 15 parts of bulbus fritillariae thunbergii, 10
to 20 parts of radix scrophulariae, 10 to 20 parts of radix paeoniae rubra, 2 to 14 parts of radix
platycodonis, 2 to 10 parts of tangerine peel, 2 to 10 parts of rhizoma pinelliae praeparata, 5 to
15 parts of poria cocos, and 1 to 5 parts of crude liquorice root.
Many herbal plant extracts and compositions are known in the art for treating one or more
symptoms associated with sleep apnea. However, these compositions treat only few symptoms
and do not cure the condition completely. Thus, there is a significant need for plant-based
compositions that can provide long lasting cure for sleep apnea and associated problems
without any serious side-effects. The present invention provides a solution to the problem of
the prior art by providing a herbal composition comprising natural ingredients in a defined
percentage range, which act together synergistically to provide a long term relief to sleep apnea
with reduced chances of relapse.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An important object of the present invention is to provide a herbal composition for long lasting
treatment of sleep apnea with no side-effects.
4
Another object of the present invention is to provide a method for preparation of said herbal
composition for treatment of sleep apnea.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a method of treatment comprising
administration of said herbal composition to a subject suffering from sleep apnea in a defined
dosage.

separately through a cold press machine and the remainder residue is extracted which is called
as cake. The cake is grounded and dried to powder form. All other eight ingredients of the
composition are taken separately in dried powder form and mixed to obtain a powdered
composition. The ingredients are mixed together to form a uniform mixture.
5

stomach, dyspepsia, disturbance in sleep, hoarseness, palpitation, discomfort in urination,
excessive thirst, laryngitis, congestion of lungs, headache (heavy head feeling), snoring, dry
throat, nasal obstruction, choking while asleep, breathing, dry mouth, blood pressure, excessive
day time sleepiness etc. Besides this, the composition of the present invention was also found
to help in weight loss, promotes normal urination and improves digestion

EXAMPLES
The following examples particularly describe the manner in which the invention is to be
performed. But the embodiments disclosed herein do not limit the scope of the invention in any
manner.
Example 1: Preparation of the Herbal Composition
Required plant parts such as flowers, fruits, leaves, seeds, roots, whole plant were collected.
The plant parts were cleaned thoroughly by washing to remove unwanted contaminants and
dried at room temperature.
Washed and dried Jufa flower (Hyssopus officinalis), Gaojaban flower (Borago officinalis),
Gaojaban leaves, Khatmi seeds (Althaea officinalis), Billilotan whole plant (Melissa
parviflora), Lasoda fruit (Cordia latifolia), Behidana seeds (Pyrus cydonia) and Mulethi root
(Glycyrrhiza glabra) were ground into a powder separately.
The oil of kaddu kernels and badam kernels was extracted separately through a cold press
machine and the remainder residue after extraction was obtained as a cake. The cake was then
dried and grounded to powder form.
The ground plant parts in the form of fine powder were mixed together uniformly to obtain the
