Although much of the information about the diet and health connection that has driven this trend is related to the reduction of chronic disease risk in adults, belief in the prophylactic use of dietary intervention including the use of dietary supplements has been extended to consumers throughout the life cycle.
1. In Ancient days, people maintained their health through proper diet practices and herbs formed an integral part of their healthcare system. Herbalism was most popular in Asian Region whereas India has been popular for herbs and herbal healthcare system since time immemorial.

28. The present invention provides for herbal extract which has the ability to treat infertility with a combination of Velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Goskshur (Tribulus terrestris), L-Arginine and Safed Musli (Chlorophytum borivillianum).
Velvet bean (MUCUNA PRURIENS)
29. Botanical Description: Velvet bean is an annual, climbing shrub with long vines that can reach over 15 m. Leaves are trifoliate, gray-silky beneath; petioles are long and silky, 6-11 cm. Leaflets are membranous, terminal leaflets are smaller, lateral very unequal sided. Dark purple flowers (6 to 30) occur in drooping racemes. Fruits are curved, 4-6 seeded. The longitudinally ribbed pod, is densely covered with loose orange hairs which cause a severe itch if they come in contact with skin. The beans are shiny black or brown. It is found in tropical Africa, India and the Caribbean. In India, it is found in the Himalayas, at altitudes of 150-1200 m, and Western Ghats.
30. Phytoconstituents: The seeds of velvet beans are known to produce the unusual nonprotein amino acid 3-(3,4- dihydroxyphenyl)-l-alanine (L-DOPA). It also contains glutathione, gallic acid and beta-sitosterol. It also has unidentified bases such as mucunine, mucunadine, prurienine and prureininine. The seed also contains two tetrahydroquinoline alkaloids namely: 3-methoxy-1,1-dimethyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3.4- tetrahydroquinoline and 3-methoxy-1, 1-dimethyl-7,8- dihydroxy-1,2,3.4-tetrahydroquinoline
31. The major biological properties of Mucuna pruriens
a) The active ingredient L-DOPA stimulates the hypothalamus and forebrain, thus stimulating the secretion of Gondatrophin Releasing Hormone (GnRH), which ultimately activates anterior lobe of pituitary to secrete FSH and LH. Elevated levels of FSH and LH stimulate the process of spermatogenesis via testosterone.

Velvet-hairy branches extend radially from a central stem. Leaves are dull green, elliptic, usually up to 10-12 cm long. The flowers are small, green and bell-shaped. Orange fruits in persistent papery sepals follow the small greenish flowers. Ashwagandha is propagated by division, cuttings or seed. Seed is the best way to propagate them.

35. Botanical Description: Puncture Vine is a tap rooted herbaceous perennial plant that grows as a summer annual in colder climates. The stems radiate from the crown to a diameter of about 10 cm to over 1 m, often branching. They are usually prostrate, forming flat patches, though they may grow more upwards in shade or among taller plants. The leaves are pinnately compound with leaflets less than a quarter-inch long. The flowers are 4-10 mm wide, with five lemon-yellow petals. A week after each flower blooms, it is followed by a fruit that easily falls apart into four or five single-seeded nutlets. The nutlets or "seeds" are hard and bear two sharp spines, 10 mm long and 4-6 mm broad point-to-point. These nutlets strikingly resemble goats' or bulls' heads; the "horns" are sharp enough to puncture bicycle tyres and to cause considerable pain to unshod feet.

42. Botanical Description: The species name comes from a suburb in Mumbai called Borivili. Safed Musli is an herb with sub-erect leaves and tuberous root system. It can grow up to a maximum height of 1.5 ft. Tubers can grow up to a depth of 10". The plant sports a rosette of long, slender leaves, growing from a thick, fleshy rhizome. The flowers are small, white, produced on sparse panicles. Leaves are slightly yellowish and white flowers with 6 petals are arranged on the flowering stalk which emerge from the centre of the plant. The seed is very small, black and enclosed in the holes. In one hole, there are about 10-12 seeds.
