Title:
Improved apparatus for the stowage of goods in containers

Background of Invention:

The present invention relates to improved stowage of goods in containers. More particularly it relates to improved apparatus for stowage of heavy rolled metal coils such as steel coils in carriers.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The invention relates to improvements in methods and apparatus for the stowage of goods on the carriers. More particularly it relates to improved apparatus for stowage of rolled metal coils in the carriers. The metal coils weighing of about ~28 tonnes are very difficult to be transported in carriers.

Conventionally the rolled metal coils weighing near about 25 tonnes are transported in the carriers. To secure these coils firmly on the carriers to avoid damage in transit they are placed on

It is also important in many cases that cargo items not move within their containers during transit. In sea transport, for example, any inadvertent shifting of cargo due to ship motions can have adverse effects on ship stability and hence safety.

Materials such as timber used to secure heavy loads in containers can present quarantine and disposal problems at their destinations.

Another problem widely faced by the transport industry particularly the sea transport is that there can be a mismatch between cargoes and container sizes on particular journey legs.
The present invention addresses these problems and issues and is applicable to cargo containers carried on land, sea and air transport vehicles. In addition, it may find application in transport modes where cargo items are contained by the structure of the carrying vehicle, for example where cargo items are carried between decks in ships, or in rail or road vehicles.

For transportation of coiled metal cargo, presently system has only bed made up of polymers, or wood or such material on which the coil are placed. The shape of the bed is adaptably moulded to fit the shape of the coil. The poly beds under the coil for placement and weight distribution, however the adaptably moulded but rigid dimensions of the bed make it difficult for use in case the dimensions of the metal roll cargo are changed. In such circumstances the security and safety of the cargo on such beds are dangerously compromised.

Another problem in respect of wood or other bio degradable beds is that they are easily susceptible for attack by termites, decay due to water, and are also difficult for disposal in case of destruction because of these reasons.

Another drawback of the present beds comprised of polymers or wood or similar material is that they are highly prone to damages and breaking during the transit, particularly on road and by sea. Due to jerks and shocks on road and swinging movements in the sea transit, there could be extensive damage to the cargo as well as transport like trucks or ships. The heavy load may damage the ship. The present invention provides solution this problem of breakage. In the existing system, in case the poly bed collapses, the coil may have the chance to rest on the floor and may damage the floor. By using the bottom support, in case the poly bed collapse, the coil will be on the support and not on the floor, hence damage to the container floor is avoided. Also, the weight of the coil is spread laterally over a longer length as compared to the coil width as the supports are longer than the coil.

The main object of the present invention is to provide an improved apparatus for stowing cargos particularly the heavy metal rolled coils which wherein the said support bed are adaptably adjustable in accordance with the size of the cargo.

Yet another object is to provide the apparatus which is light in weight and immune to attack by termites and also decay by water.

Still another object is to provide the improved apparatus which distributes the weight of the cargo equally on entire surface of the bad so that the chances of breaking of the bed are minimized.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention provided the improved bed made up of lighter material, capable of being assembled from different components so as to mould in to adaptable shape of the cargo. The improved bed is also provided with better spreading of the weight of the coils, we have used additional support in the form of bottom runner beams under the bed using wood/plastic/metal which further distributes the load of the coil along the length of the container. Since the bed is in three pieces, as compared to earlier system, it is easier to adjust the bed diameter in case of any variation in the coil width from the diameter cut of the bed.

Brief description of the drawings:

The present invention is better explained and described with reference to the drawing accompanying this specification which are illustrative only and should not be construed to limit the scope of the present invention in any manner.

Detailed description of drawings:

Referring to Figures (2) and (3) the improved apparatus for the stowage of goods in containers comprises, a base (1) moulded to adaptably accommodate the metal coil rolls, the support beams (4) adaptably fitting into the base (1).

In an embodiment of the present invention the base (1) may comprise or at least three segments, a central segment (2) for supporting the coil having at least two lateral segments at the either sides of the central segment (2).

In yet another embodiment the top portion of the central and lateral segments of the base form an arc like shape to accommodate the rolled coils of the metal sheets.

In still another embodiment the lateral segments are having a support beams (4) running through an adaptable grove through the width of each of the lateral segments.

In yet another embodiment the support beams may be square shaped or rectangular.

In still another embodiment the base (1) comprising of central and lateral segments are made up of expanded poly styrene.

In yet another embodiment the support beams are made up of wood or plastic or metals.

Working of the invention:

For better spreading of the weight of the coils, we have used additional support under the bed using wood/plastic/metal beam which further distributes the load of the coil along the length of the container. For example, if the width of the coil is 1200 mm, we use a bottom beam of length up to 2000 mm, hence the weight of the coil is spread over a length of 2000 mm.

By the use of the bottom support, the systems ensure fool proof solution as there’s no chance of coil being resting on the floor. In the existing system, in case the poly bed collapses, the coil may have the chance to rest on the floor and may damage the floor. By using the bottom support, in case the poly bed collapse, the coil will be on the support and not on the floor, hence damage to the container floor is avoided.
As the base is split into at least three segments, central and lateral segments each at the sides of the central segment, the arc shape of the top of the base is flexible and can be easily adaptable to the size of the roll of the metal sheets.

Further, use of the bottom support helps in reuse of the material, making the system more cost effective.

Advantages of the present invention:

1. Adaptability to the size of the cargo.

2. Resistant to destruction by attack from termite or due to water.

3. More cost effective as the new improved stowage is reusable.

4. More safe and secure.
