FIELD OF INVENTION
The invention relates to an improved Coke Quenching Car.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Presently, quenching of hot coke in coke quenching car is done by spraying
water from coke quenching tower from top only. While spraying from top, hot
coke at the top gets quenched while hot coke at the bottom is not quenched
properly. In order to quench hot coke at the bottom also, more water is sprayed
from top, which results in uneven quenching of coke without having any control
of moisture content in the quenched coke.
These problems are overcome by present invention, which provides an improved
coke quenching car having a bottom quenching arrangement and an outer gate
opening arrangement. In the present invention, the bottom quenching
arrangement is for quenching hot coke from the bottom and the outer gate
opening arrangement is provided to retain water for a preset period for uniform
quenching of the hot coke to ensure that the moisture content in quenched coke
is less than 4%.
US 4164130 discloses a quenching car having an inclined surface
for supporting coke to be quenched a moveable gate which in a
first position retains the coke and in a second position permits
discharge of coke from the inclined surface, and a bottom wall
which guides the coke from the inclined surface across a space
and over the wall of a reservoir carried on said quench car which
will catch and hold excess quench water which drains between the
inclined surface and gate means.
US 4010695 describes a Coke quench car having a slanted bottom
and discharge opening in one wall with a movable grate at the
discharge opening to drain water and retain coke. A door outboard
of the grate closes the discharge opening in a substantially liquid-
tight condition and accumulates quench water in the car to
submerge the coke. Means are provided for slectively opening the
door to drain only water at the quench station and for later
opening the grate to discharge the quenched coke at the coke
wharf. A second embodiment provides a tilting bottom coke car
with a first sealing means for sealing the car in substantially liquid
tight condition to accumulate water and
submerge the coke. A second sealing means are provided to permit the floor to
be tilted to a liquid discharge position to drain only water. Means are provided
for tilting the floor between an open and closed and intermediate liquid
discharge position.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An object of this invention is to propose an improved coke quenching car.
Another object of this invention is to propose an improved coke quenching car
which leads to uniform quenching of hot coke.
Further, object of this invention is to propose an improved coke quenching car
which is capable to quench hot coke to contain less than 4% moisture content in
quenched coke.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided an improved coke quenching Car
adaptable to atleast one top quenching arrangement for quenching of hot cake
comprising atleast two travel bogie means ; a braking device to control a
synchronous movement of the atleast two travel bogie means with an electric
locomotive atleast two inner gate means for discharge of the quenched coke on
the wharf; a pneumatic arrangement for opening and closing of atleast two
inner gate means, and atleast two outer gate means for operating a brake
device; atleast one set of coupler and buffer disposed on either side of the car
for connecting with the electric locomotive; and an electrical control means
mounted on the car for controlling movement of the gates; the improvement is
characterized in that the atleast two outer gate means being enabled to
pneumatically operate to self-position in an opening and/or a closing state in
registration with a predetermined sequences of the discharge of the quenched
coke, and in that atleast one bottom quenching arrangement is disposed at an
outer bottom part of the travel bogie means for additionally quenching the hot
coke from the bottom to achieve an uniform quenching upto the maximum depth
of the coke batch.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO
DRAWINGS:
Fig. 1: mainly shows the Coke Quenching Car & its components. It consists of
two nos. travel bogie means (1), a brake device (2), a pneumatic device (3), two
numbers gate opening means (inside ) (4), two gate opening means (outer) (5),
bottom quenching arrangement (6), two coupler & buffer (7), one frame assly
(8) & one electrical control means (9).
Fig. 2: Shows the gate opening means (outer) according to this invention. It
mainly consists of guide (10), guide roller (11) outer gate (12) & pneumatic
cylinders (13). Initially this device remains in closed position.
Fig. 3: Shows the bottom quenching arrangement according to this invention. It
mainly consists of water tank (15), valves (16), main headers (17) branch pipes
(18) & valves (19) in the branch pipes. Here water from tank (15) flows into the
main headers (17) and subsequently through branch pipes (18) & valves (19) to
the nozzles (20) on the liners plates installed on the floor. The piping device is
installed below the floor of coke quenching car.
After receiving hot coke from coke oven battery, coke quenching car is driven by
loco to quenching tower. Here 70% of the water required for quenching of hot
coke is fed through this arrangement in controlled manner from bottom & 30%
of water is sprayed from top at the quenching tower. During this period the outer
gate (12) remains closed for certain period retaining the water supplied through
the bottom quenching arrangement in the coke quenching car for quenching the
hot coke so that moisture content in the coke remains below 4%.
After quenching for a preset period, the outer gate (12) is opened slightly with
the help of pneumatic cylinders (13) to discharge the retained water. After
discharging the water coke quenching car is moved by loco to the wharf where
quenched coke is to be discharged. The outer gate (12) is lifted completely by
pneumatic cylinder (13) through the guide (10) and guide roller (11) making
room for opening the inner gate (14) to discharge the coke on the wharf.
