PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner
in which it is to be performed.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention generally relates to under run protection device for vehicles and more particularly an improved support structure for front under run protection device (FUPD) in commercial vehicles.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In commercial vehicles the chassis frame is located at a higher distance from the road surface. The distance between the chassis frame and the road surface is so high that smaller vehicles can go beneath the chassis frame during accidents. Such an interaction is known as "Under-run" of the vehicle. The under-run impacts at high speeds are quite fatal as there is no structure on the Smaller vehicles to stop it till the chassis frame long members. The commercial vehicles hit the upper part of the smaller vehicle structure, such as a pillar, roof headers, which do not have any energy absorbing capability. Occasionally the chassis frame long members can pierce through the windshield glass and hit the front seat occupants of the smaller vehicle directly. Therefore such under ride crashes are severe and lead to human fatalities.
Commercial vehicles are therefore provided with under-run protection device (UPD) which is an auxiliary barrier fitted to the chassis frame to interact with the front structure of the smaller vehicles and stop it to avoid from being under-run. The FUpDs consist of an under-run protection member, with suitable brackets to connect it to the chassis frame. Such under-run devices are recognized as FUPD (Front UPD), RUPD (rear UPD), and SUPD (side UPD) as per their location on the vehicle.
Generally the FUPD member is fitted to the long members of the chassis frame. However it is not always possible to fit the FUPD member to the chassis frame long member due to space constraints. More over during frontal impact of vehicles during
accidents, a high force will be excreted on the chassis frame causing serious damages. Particularly when the FUPD is being adapted to an existing vehicle structure the proposal would require minimum design changes and shortest possible development time.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
The main objective of the present invention is to provide an FUPD with support structure mounted on the chassis frame cross member.
Another object of the present invention is to provide adequate strength to the FUPD and to reduce the force generated on the chassis cross member during accidents.
Yet another objective of the present invention is to provide an FUPD with support structure which is simple in construction, cost effective and requires shortest possible development time.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The embodiments herein provide a front under run protection device (FUPD) with support structure for commercial vehicles. The support structure for FUPD comprises a chassis frame long members and a cross member. A pair of mounting brackets is provided for fastening with chassis frame cross member. A pair of reinforcement bracket is fastened at the junction of said long member and cross member of chassis frame. A pair of support bracket is provided for connecting said mounting brackets with said chassis frame long members. The support brackets and reinforcement brackets provide adequate strength to the FUPD and reduce the force generated on the chassis cross member during under accidents.
According to present invention, the lower end of said mounting bracket is inverted L-shaped and assembled behind said FUPD. The support bracket is mounted on the chassis frame long members. The support bracket includes a projection towards one side and other end of said projection includes a flat profile with holes for fastening with mounting bracket. The cylindrical projection with flat profile provides resistance to the mounting brackets and FUPD during frontal impact of vehicle. According to present invention plurality of ribs are provided in reinforcement brackets and support brackets to provide strength to the brackets.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
FIG. 1 shows a perspective view of a typical vehicle cabin mounted on chassis frame
with support structure for front under run protection device, according to present
invention.
FIG. 2 shows a front perspective view of the support structure for FUPD of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 shows a rear perspective view of the support structure for FUPD of FIG. 1
FIG. 4 shows an exploded view of the support structure for FUPD of FIG.l.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The embodiments herein provide a front under run protection device (FUPD) with support structure for commercial vehicles. The support structure is mounted on the front cross member of the chassis frame to provide adequate strength to the FUPD to prevent under run of vehicles during accidents.
Referring now to the drawings wherein the showings are for the purpose of illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention only, and not for the purpose of limiting the same.
The perspective view according to present invention as shown in figure; a typical vehicle having a cabin 1 is mounted on chassis frame 2 with support structure for front under run protection device. The support structure comprises a chassis frame long members 4 and a cross member 5, a pair of mounting brackets 6 for fastening with chassis frame cross member 5. A pair of reinforcement bracket 7 (refer FIG. 3) is provided at the junction of said long member 4 and cross member 5 of chassis frame 2. A pair of support bracket 8 provided for connecting said mounting brackets 6 with said chassis frame long members 4. The support brackets 8 and reinforcement brackets 7 provide adequate strength to the FUPD beam 3 and reduce the force generated on the chassis cross member 5 during under accidents. The lower end of said mounting bracket 6 is inverted L-shaped and assembled behind said FUPD 3. The support bracket 8 includes a projection 15 (refer FIG. 3) towards one side and other end of said projection 15 includes a flat profile 16 with holes 17 for mounting with mounting bracket 6. The projection 15 with flat profile 16 provides support to the mounting brackets and FUPD 3 during frontal impact of vehicle. According to present invention plurality of ribs 11, 14 (refer FIG. 4) are provided to provide strength to the reinforcement brackets and support brackets.
The front and rear perspective view of the FUPD with support structure, according to present invention as shown in figure the chassis frame 2 consist of long members 4 closed by a cross member 5 at its front end. The FUPD 3 is a structural member covering the width of the vehicle. The support structure for FUPD 3 is mounted on the chassis frame 2. The mounting brackets 6 are further supported by pair of support brackets 8 on the either side. The support brackets 8 connect said mounting brackets 6 with the said long members 4 to provide requisite strength to FUPD. The pair of reinforcement brackets 7 is provided at the junction of said long member 4 and cross member 5 to provide additional strength to support the said FUPD member.
The exploded view of FUPD with support structures, according to present invention shows the mounting brackets 6 having a plurality of holes 9 provided on upper end and an inverted L-shaped profile 10 towards lower end. The reinforcement brackets 7 includes holes 12 for mounting at junction between said long member 4 and cross member 5 of chassis frame 2 to provide additional strength to support the FUPD 3. The support bracket 8 includes holes 13 for mounting with said long members 4 of chassis frame 2. The support bracket 8 includes a projection 15 towards one side and other end of said projection 15 includes a flat profile 16 with holes for mounting with mounting bracket 6. The shape of the said projection if preferred to be cylindrical in shape. Both the reinforcement bracket 7 and support bracket 8 includes ribs 11 and 14 to provide strength for the brackets.
In the event of under run of a small vehicle, the small vehicle front end impacts the FUPD beam. Due to the impact, forces are generated on the FUPD beam 3 and mounting brackets 6. These forces are further transferred to the cross member 5 which is very weak by construction. However the support brackets 8 react to these impact forces and thereby reduce the forces generated on the cross member 5. The chassis long member 4 and cross member 5 junction is provided with reinforcement brackets 7 to improve the robustness in the event of under run of smaller vehicles.
ADVANTAGES -
The support structure according to present invention is mounted on the front cross member of the chassis frame to provide adequate strength to the FUPD to prevent under run of vehicles during accidents.
To support structure is simple in construction, cost effective and requires less time for development.
