Specification

This invention relates to an improved splash deck for use in a cooling tower
It is known to remove heat from cooling water using air in across and counter current contact inside cooling towers
Most cross flow cooling media designs used today, do a pretty good job in promoting the removal of heat from cooling water, but they are constrained by the limited availability of good quality water. This shortage has forced industries to use sea water or turbid water for cooling towers. Unfortunately, the cost involved in treating such water to make it suitable for film fill is very high
It is, therefore, an object of the invention to propose improved means for efficient contact between the air and water inside the cooling tower
It is another object of this invention to propose such an improved means, which will increase the surface area of contact between the water and air thereby increasing the efficiency
It is a further object of this invention to propose such an improved means, which will have sufficient physical/mechanical strength, chemical resistance and flame resistance
It is still further object of this invention to propose such an improved means which can be used in vertical counter current water-air flow or in a cross flow water-air flow system
It is yet an another object of this invention to propose such a means, which in cross flow cooling towers, can be used in transverse and/or parallel arrangement to the air flow
These and oftw objects of tttis invention will be clearer from the following paragraphs.
BRIEF STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION.
According to this invention there is provided an improved sptashdek for use in cooling towers comprising an unitary piece having preferably two sides, held together at the top by a rib, angularly separated from one another, each side having a plurality of perforations, formed on its surface, as a series of holes and adapted to be hung / supported in the tower by means of hangers or the tower free end of each side of the unit has a channel shaped (C-SHAPED) groove enabling it to be clipped to the supporting bars
The other features are as follows:
(a) the plurality of perforations are uniformly formed in a plurality of rows
(b) the plurality of perforations in the rows are arranged in a zigzag manner, such that the corresponding perforations of each alternate row falls in the same straight line
(c) Preferably, all the perforations on both sides of the unit are of same size and shape
(d) The units are preferably used in a double deck manner, the perforations in the units of the upper deck being larger in size than the perforations in the lower desk, preferably in a staggered fashion keeping a desired horizontal and vertical pitch.
(e) An improved as claimed in claims 1 to 5, which are made of UV stabilized PVC
The invention will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: -
Figure -1 shows a splash bar unit having rhombic holes.
Figure - 2 shows a splash bar unit having round holes.
Figure - 3 shows a plan view of one side of the bar of Figure -1 in the direction of arrow "A"
Figure - 4-shows a front view of the bar of Figure - 1 or Figure - 2
The following with be dear from toe drawings.
It is a splash fill oftriangular shape, made out of UV stabilized PVC. Its arm is c-shaped at the lower ends enabling it to be dipped to the bar The both sides A, & A2 of it can be punched in rhombic,
circular, square or hexagonal shapes. These punched shapes are in different size for double deck design. A rib is provided at the verttix. Each arm can be of desired length with an included angle of 90°. The sectional thickness of the bar varies and depends upon application. The length of the bar is as per project requirements.
Manufacturing: - It is manufactured using a PVC resin mix, which provides the required strength and chemical resistance properties. A unique combination of impact modifier, stabilizer and processing aids are used to manufacture the Splashdek, It has a unique extruded profile and after extrusion, punching operations are done.
Application: - It is used in cross flow & counter flow design of Cooling Towers. Additionally, in cross flow Cooling Towers it can be used in transverse and parallel arrangement to the airflow.
Splash bar type cooling media promote liquid surface area by creating a multitude of fine droplets as water falls through the cooling section. This is accomplished by placing the splash bars in a staggered, spaced-apart patterns where falling liquid impacts and shatters on the surfaces of splash bars. The heat transfer takes place on the surface of the droplets. The greater the number and the smaller the size of droplets, the better is the heat transfer efficiency.
The splash units offer high thermal efficiencies and minimal pressure drop coupled with a new double layering concept for cooling the Double deck droplet design
The availability of dual sizes enables the placing of the fills in layers-those with the larger holes in the upper layer and those with smaller holes, at the lower end. The objective of this is to reduce the size of the droplets emanating from the lower layer. This Double-deck Droplet design results in a larger number of smaller sized droplets that in turn favourably impact both efficiency and cooling.
Advantages:
1 It meets the minimum, limits for mechanical and physical properties set by CTI.
2, Suitable for use with sea water.
3. It's unique notch size generates drops and ensure a relatively clean surface for a better
splash.
4. The smooth edged rib at the vertex gives added strength to the bar, making it conducive to high water loading and relatively lower spacing.
5. It is fire retardant
6. It is to be noted that the angle of separation or the angle held between the two sides, can be according to convenience .though we have explained with reference to 90 as separation angle,
7. Similarly the shapes and sizes of the perforations can be again according to exigencies of circumstances.
8. Various combinations of the features explained herein are also feasible and are not outside the scope of the invention
