An improved switch expansion joint for use in a railway track at the end of long welded rails secured to sleepers (N,S), said joint comprising a pair of tongue rails (1, 1') slideably disposed against each other and having a gap (G) therebetween, said rails resting on and fastened at the foot of each rail by means of inner and outer brackets (3, 4) to at least four bearing plates or slide chairs (2), said bearing plates or slide chairs being secured to the sleepers (S) therebelow characterised in that the webs of said tongue rails have a bend of about 0 degrees 40 minutes over a length of about 1800 mm; the heads of the tongue rails are provided with pearlitised portions near the critical gap areas pearlitised by special induction-hardening process for increasing their wear life; and the gauge face of each said tongue rail is machined over a length of about 1800 mm by about .1 mm.
