In Situ Phytoremediation Of Heavy Metals Contaminated Soil

Abstract: This invention relates to the feild of phytoremediation, particularly to methods of accumulating and removing heavy metals such as lead and cadmium using plants such as Brassica juncea, Jatropha curcus, Castor and Poplar plants. This tachnique can also be used for removal of other heavy metals such as Nickel and Chromium. In this tachnology a plant species or combination of plant species can be utilized for removal of above mention heavy metals from soil up to the depth of one meter. The heavy metal could be removed by plants such as Brasica juncea, Jatropha curcus, Ricinus communis and Popils sps. to such and extent that the soil could be used again for the agriculture. The heavy metals could be effectively ramoved using the above mention plants in the tropical climate with less saline soil. The effectiveness of the process could be as high as 90 percent. If the soil is not contaminated with high levels of organics.
