Indexing Assembly

Abstract: The present subject matter describes an indexing assembly (100) for securing a flex plate coupled to a crankshaft of an automatic transmission (AT) engine (103) with a clutch disc of a transmission assembly of a vehicle in a production line. The indexing assembly (100) includes a conveyor belt (102) in the production line for carrying the AT engine (103) for an indexing operation. The indexing machine (106) is movably mounted on an overhead conveyor (104) running parallel to the conveyor belt (102) and the indexing machine (106) overhangs the AT engine (103). The indexing assembly (100) also includes an indexing system (108) coupled to the indexing machine (106) to: detect the presence of an engine pallet of the AT engine (103), trigger movement of the indexing machine (106) such that the indexing machine (106) is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the crankshaft, engage the indexing machine (106) with the crankshaft for performing the indexing operation; and turn the crankshaft engaged with the indexing machine (106) along the longitudinal axis of the crankshaft based on a predefined sequence for performing the indexing operation.

Specification

Claims:1. An indexing assembly (100) for securing a flex plate coupled to a crankshaft of an automatic transmission (AT) engine (103) with a clutch disc of a transmission assembly of a vehicle in a production line, the indexing assembly (100) comprising:
a conveyor belt (102) in the production line for carrying the AT engine (103) for an indexing operation;
an indexing machine (106) movably mounted on an overhead conveyor (104) running parallel to the conveyor belt (102), wherein the indexing machine (106) is overhanging the AT engine (103);
an indexing system (108) coupled to the indexing machine (106) to:
detect the presence of an engine pallet of the AT engine (103) entering the production line on the conveyor belt (102);
trigger movement of the indexing machine (106) such that the indexing machine (106) is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the crankshaft;
engage the indexing machine (106) with the crankshaft for performing the indexing operation; and
turn the crankshaft engaged with the indexing machine (106) along the longitudinal axis of the crankshaft based on a predefined sequence for performing the indexing operation for securing the flex plate with the clutch disc.

2. The indexing assembly (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein to trigger the movement the indexing system (108) is to further:
move the indexing machine (106) from a home position within a console unit mounted on the overhead conveyor (104) to an alignment position, such that in the alignment position the indexing machine (106) is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the crankshaft.

3. The indexing assembly (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein on completion of the indexing operation the indexing system (108) is to receive an acknowledgement from an operator, wherein the acknowledgement prompts the indexing system (108) to disengage the indexing machine (106) from the crankshaft.

4. The indexing assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the overhead conveyor (104) includes motorized guide rails running in same velocity as the conveyor belt (102) carrying the AT engines.

5. A method for securing a flex plate coupled to a crankshaft of an automatic transmission (AT) engine (103) with a clutch disc of a transmission assembly of a vehicle in a production line, the method comprising:
detecting the presence of an engine pallet of the AT engine (103) entering the production line on a conveyor belt (102), wherein an indexing machine (106) is movably mounted on an overhead conveyor (104) running parallel to the conveyor belt (102), and wherein the indexing machine (106) is overhanging the AT engine (103);
triggering movement of the indexing machine (106) such that the indexing machine (106) is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the crankshaft;
engaging the indexing machine (106) with the crankshaft for performing the indexing operation; and
turning the crankshaft engaged with the indexing machine (106) along the longitudinal axis of the crankshaft based on a predefined sequence for performing the indexing operation for securing the flex plate with the clutch disc.

6. The method as claimed in claim 5 further comprising:
disengaging the indexing machine (106) from the crankshaft on completion of the indexing operation; and
positioning the indexing machine (106) from an alignment position, wherein the indexing machine (106) is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the crankshaft back to a home position within a console unit overhanging the AT engine (103).

7. The method as claimed in claim 5, wherein the indexing operation comprises:
securing the flex plate with the clutch disc using secures and a DC securing tool, wherein the securing comprises:
synchronizing the DC securing tool with the indexing machine (106) to send feedback signals to the indexing machine (106) for performing the indexing operation; and
tightening the secures in a definite order based on the predetermined sequence, wherein the indexing machine (106) engaged with the crankshaft provides a visual indication of the predetermined sequence, and wherein the DC securing tool is operated in the predetermined sequence and based on inputs provided by an operator.

8. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein the visual indication includes glowing LEDs corresponding to predefined securing positions on the crankshaft in the predetermined sequence, wherein the indexing machine (106) turns the crankshaft along the longitudinal axis, based on the visual indication, such that the secures are tightened at the predefined securing positions.

9. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein the indexing machine (106) and the DC securing tool is communicatively coupled via a Bluetooth network.

10. The method as claimed in claim 5, further comprising two indexing machines mounted on the overhead conveyor, wherein each of the two indexing machines alternatively perform the indexing operation on AT engines entering the production line.

11. An indexing system (108) for performing an indexing operation to secure a flex plate coupled to a crankshaft of an automatic transmission (AT) engine (103) with a clutch disc of a transmission assembly, wherein the indexing system (108) is coupled to an indexing machine (106), the indexing system (108) comprising:
a processor (202); and
a memory (204);
wherein the processor (202) is coupled to the memory (204) to:
detect the presence of an engine pallet of the AT engine (103) entering a production line on a conveyor belt (102);
trigger movement of the indexing machine (106) such that the indexing machine (106) is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the crankshaft;
engage the indexing machine (106) with the crankshaft for performing the indexing operation; and
turn the crankshaft engaged with the indexing machine (106) along the longitudinal axis of the crankshaft based on a predefined sequence for performing the indexing operation to secure the flex plate with the clutch disc.
