Abstract: Disclosed herein is an air intake system for an internal combustion engine. A main air passage of the air intake system is integral with the engine compartment. The system has an air filter, which is connected to the engine through an air filter hose. The system has a side panel that separates the air filter from an intake system reservoir. The intake system reservoir of the system has a reservoir with a tangential entry passage for air intake from the main air passage, and a noise reduction chamber that acts as a noise dampener. The reservoir also has a lateral exit passage that delivers the intake air to the air filter. The intake system reservoir is in line with the main air passage and the air filter.

PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION The following specification describes the invention
1
Field of Invention:
The present invention relates to an Intake system reservoir in an Internal Combustion Engine for reducing the air intake suction noise. The present invention particularly relates to the position of the reservoir with respect to the air intake passage.
Background:
The intake reservoir for an internal combustion engine is vital for reducing the air intake suction noise and sometimes for improvement in engine performance.
Conventionally, air intake reservoir consists of variable volume resonating chambers branched out from the main air intake passage. Air intake noise is reduced by making pulsating air interfere, which is generated in the resonating chambers.
Typically, air layout is described as follows. Resonating chambers 400 and 500 as shown in Fig.l are connected to the main air passage 100 and air filter hose 600 by secondary air passages 700 and 800. Secondary air passage 700 connects an air filter 200 to one of the resonating chamber 500. Another secondary air passage 800 connects the air filter hose 600 and other resonating chamber 400. In yet other typical embodiment, one instead of two resonating chambers is used.
This branching of resonator from the main air passage is efficient in reduction of a particular range of frequency of noise.
Thus, to overcome the aforementioned deficiencies it is desirable to improve upon the positioning of the reservoir for better intake suction noise reduction.
2
Objects of the Invention:
An object of the present invention relates to better reduction of noise from air intake suction in an internal combustion engine.
Another object of the present invention is the use of resonating chamber directly connected to the main air passage thereby reducing the noise and also the manufacturing cost of the embodiment.
Yet another object of the present invention is to prevent water entry to the engine.
Still another object of the present invention is to decrease the volume used by the air layout which can be otherwise used for some other component in the engine.
One more object of the present invention is that this reservoir acts like an extended dirty housing which otherwise had to be accommodated in the crowded engine compartment.
Further object of the present invention is that the reservoir also acts as a dust separator.
Various modifications of the disclosed objects, as well as alternate objects of the invention, will become apparent to persons skilled in the art upon reference to the description of the invention. It is therefore contemplated that such modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the present invention as defined.
3
Description:
To overcome the above deficiencies present in the conventional air resonator in the internal combustion engine, reservoir is connected to the main air intake passage for efficient absorption of suction noise.
Fig. 2 illustrates an air circuit in an internal combustion engine showing the reservoir in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. A reservoir 400 for reducing the suction noise is shown connected to the main air passage 500 and air filter hose 600. Air enters the reservoir from the passage 100 and leads to the air filter 200 via main air passage 500. Filtered air is supplied to the engine 300 through air filter hose 600.
Fig. 3 illustrates housing of the intake reservoir in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. A housing 430 comprises an entry passage 410 and an exit passage 420 connecting to the air filter.
Fig. 4 illustrates the position of the reservoir in the engine in a 3-D view. The reservoir 400 and air filter 200 are mounted on a side panel 900. In this embodiment, the reservoir 400 is mounted on one side of the side panel 900, thereby occupying otherwise unused space of the engine compartment. Air leads to the engine from the air filter through the air filter hose 600.
In yet other embodiment the position of the reservoir can be changed according to the packaging requirement of the engine, provided that the reservoir still is directly connected to the main air intake passage.
Although the invention has been described with reference to specific embodiments, this description is not meant to be construed in a limiting sense. Various

modifications of the disclosed embodiments, as well as alternate embodiments of the invention, will become apparent to persons skilled in the art upon reference to the description of the invention. It is therefore contemplated that such modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the present invention as defined.
