Background and prior art
Security provided to the children in schools and colleges is mainly aimed at taking special measure to combat the threats to the children, staff and school property in education environments. The safety in the schools and colleges involves providing shelter to the students from violence and bullying, and also from the treats from outside such as blasts and firing, and also the exposure to harmful elements such as drugs etc. The schools are mainly targeted by the assailants as they are easy to enter and has high availability of the victims.
In recent days the schools are targeted by the assailants as they feel it is easier to achieve their goal by threatening, keeping hostage and even killing the students and staff, for their personal or religious reasons. The schools in the US, as of January 2018, since 1990, at least 240 school shootings have occurred. There are also some cases where the schools are vandalized due to various reasons. Due to such shootings, lock or monitor doors, gates, metal detectors etc., are used by the schools to check the people who enter the school, if they have any live weapons.
Another issue related to the safety of the children in schools is that the cases of ragging and bullying which are in rise. Student experience bullying and ragging by other fellow students or seniors, which can force the victims to experience fearenter into depression, and even take extreme steps like suicide or killing. The bullying and ragging must be monitored and strictly condemned by the schools and colleges, by awarding serious punishments to the accused. Prevention for bullying by parents, teachers, and other adults includes talking to students about bullying, modeling good examples of treating others with kindness, and helping students get involved in something they're passionate about. Providing and ensuring safety and security of the children and staff in schools is the primary responsibility of every school.
One such safety and security measure taken by the schools and colleges is by the installation of CCTV cameras which provides digital surveillance. The digital surveillance technology enables to monitor the students, staff and visitors is currently being employed in schools and colleges. The Closed-circuit television (CCTV), is the most common type of video monitoring system, which can monitor the premises of schools and colleges to monitor the activities carried out, and to point out if any illegal activity or threat to security is carried out. The cameras are also installed on buses to prevent violence, theft, and illegal activity by students or drivers etc.
There is a need for an improved system which can use the Internet of things (IoT) for providing and increasing the security at the educational institutions like schools and colleges.
