Invention Of Mounting Fixture For Testing Of Nose Landing Gear

Abstract: The mounting fixture for testing of Nose Landing Gear comprises a Jaw Mechanism which is used as main housing to hold whole mechanism of Nose Landing Gear in vertical position. The Jaw Mechanism is made of steel and comprises of adjustable jaws along with shaft. During functional tests of Nose Landing Gear, the high pressure chamber should be inflated with nitrogen gas, the shock absorber to be compressed and ensure the Castor Arm and connected items can be rotated in either direction. Hence, the Fixture was attached to Compression Test Rig with the help of nut and bolt to achieve rigidness. Another part of Mounting Fixture contains a base provided with slotted grooves to match the axle of Nose Landing Gear to enable the unit for compression and rotation in either direction. The mounting fixture is also utilized for filling up procedure and inflating the high pressure chamber as well as low pressure chamber as described in the testing procedure. Also, the fixture can be utilized to check picketing ring movement from its recess to the cylinder and check it returns to the rubber buffer when released. The mounting fixture will also be useful in checking the torque load required to move the cranked pin to withdraw the locking pin from stop to stop and when the load is released the locking pin returns to its original position. It can also prevent any accidental collapse of the shock absorber of Landing Gear.

1. Title of the invention
Invention of Mounting Fixture for testing of Nose Landing Gear.
2. Field of invention
This invention is related to the repair, overhaul and testing facility of Nose Landing Gear of military aircraft.
3. Use of invention
This invention is used to carry out checks to ensure that the castor arm can be rotated in either direction and compression of the shock absorber is carried out in accordance with testing procedure.
4. Prior art
During functional tests of Nose Landing Gear, the high pressure chamber should be inflated with nitrogen gas, the shock absorber to be compressed and ensure the Castor Arm and connected items can be rotated in either direction. The facility to check the above said tests was not available in the section.
It is most critical test during functional tests of Nose Landing Gear. It involves installation of a Nose Landing Gear in vertical position and requires rotation of in either direction. It also requires compression of shock absorber and rotation of castor arm in inflated high pressure chamber condition.
5. Draw backs of prior art
a. Provision for keeping the Nose Landing Gear in vertical position was not available leading
imbalances during testing.
b. The compressing of Shock Absorber was carried out with the help of bottle jack which
involved manual efforts.
c. The measurement of angle of rotation of castor arm could not be done in prior art.

6. Comparison between prior art and present invention
i. In the prior art the provision for keeping the Nose Landing Gear in vertical position was not available. Hence an arrangement in the form of mounting fixture was fabricated to keep Nose Landing Gear in vertical position.
ii. Also there was limitation for carrying out compression test on shock absorber which involve excess manual efforts in pumping bottle jack and cannot be measured. This activity was resulting in considerable delay. This was reduced by providing a fixture in the present test rig enabled with the load cells. The compression of shock absorber using load cells can be measured in the new facility & has proved the efficiency.
iii. The measurement of angle of rotation of castor arm could not be done in prior art. Provision has been made to measure the angle of rotation of castor arm by marking the angle sector on the base.
7. Aim of the invention
Aim of the invention was to develop a mounting fixture which can hold the nose landing gear at vertical position as well as to rotate the castor arm of the Nose Landing Gear in either direction in pressurized condition.
8. Summary of the present invention
The present art ensures installation of a Nose Landing Gear in vertical position, shock absorber compression and castor arm rotation in either direction in inflated high pressure chamber condition. The functional tests of Nose Landing Gear is now carried out effectively.

10. Statement of invention
The mounting fixture of Nose Landing Gear provides an easy and efficient way to carry out the functional tests in accordance with the testing procedure.
11. Detailed description of invention
(Refer fig 2, 3 and 4)
The present art contains a mounted fixture with features such as Jaw Mechanism which is used as main housing to hold whole mechanism of Nose Landing Gear in vertical position. The Jaw Mechanism is made of steel and comprises of adjustable jaws along with shaft. During functional tests of Nose Landing Gear, the high pressure chamber should be inflated with nitrogen gas, the shock absorber to be compressed and ensure the Castor Arm and connected items can be rotated in either direction. Hence, the Fixture was attached to Compression Test Rig with the help of nut and bolt to achieve rigidness. Another part of Mounting Fixture contains a base provided with slotted grooves to match the axle of Nose Landing Gear to enable the unit for compression and rotation in either direction. The mounting fixture is also utilized for filling up procedure and inflating the high pressure chamber as well as low pressure chamber as described in the testing procedure.
Also, the fixture can be utilized to check picketing ring movement from its recess to the cylinder and check it returns to the rubber buffer when released. The mounting fixture will also be useful in checking the torque load required to move the cranked pin to withdraw the locking pin from stop to stop and when the load is released the locking pin returns to its original position. It can also prevent any accidental collapse of the shock absorber of Landing Gear.

We claim that:
1. A Mounting Fixture for testing of Nose Landing Gear, said work comprising in
combination: A Mounting Fixture for testing of Nose Landing Gear comprising a base plate
with slotted grooves to match the axle of Nose Landing Gear to enable the unit for
compression and rotation in either direction and Jaw Mechanism which is used as main
housing to hold whole mechanism of Nose Landing Gear in vertical position.
2. A Mounting Fixture for testing of Nose Landing Gear as claimed in claim 1 wherein the base plate with slotted grooves is fixed to the compression test rig to match the axle of Nose Landing Gear to enable the unit for compression and rotation in either direction.
3. A Mounting Fixture for testing of Nose Landing Gear as claimed in claim 1 wherein Jaw Mechanism which is used as main housing to hold whole mechanism of Nose Landing Gear in vertical position is fixed to the compression test rig.
