Invention Of New Radio Frequency Flexible Co Axial Cable Part Number F108 To Replace The Existing Cable Uniradio 108 On Hawk Aircraft

Abstract: This invention relates to the introduction of new equivalent Radio Frequency flexible co-axial cable to replace the parent cable used in Hawk Aircraft. The RF Co-axial cable part number F108 consists of conductor made up of solid silver plated copper wire with solid PTFE taped and fused insulation, single braided shield of silver plated copper wire and PTFE taped and sintered Jacket. The above RF co¬axial cable is being used in Communication, Navigation and attack systems of Hawk Aircraft. The procurement of imported cable takes longer lead time and more cost. The longer lead time leads to delay in production which in turn affects the delivery of the Aircraft. Moreover, we should be self reliant in all areas particularly in the Defense sector which is the immune system of our country. Also to fulfill "Make in India" concept, it was decided to invent new equivalent RF flexible co-axial cable to replace the parent cable used in Hawk Aircraft. The specifications were prepared keeping in mind the requirements of Hawk Aircraft systems and BS 2316, Part 3. The cable was designed <& developed and manufactured in coordination with M/s Flu-Tef Industries, Ahmedabad. The cable had undergone all the stringent qualification testing as recommended by the certification agency and met all the specif ication requirements.

BACKGROUND OF INVENTION:

The RF co-axial cable part number F108 is used in the main systems such as Communication, Navigation and Attack system of Hawk Aircraft. This cable is procured from foreign countries. The procurement is taking longer lead time and thereby the production of the Hawk aircraft is affected. Hence, it was decided to invent new equivalent cable and develop the manufacturing facility in India i.e

OBJECTIVE OF INVENTION:

The main objective of the invention is to invent new equivalent RF co-axial cable part number F108 to replace the existing RF Co-axial cable part number UNIRADIO 108 which is already used in the Hawk Aircraft. Thereby aligning to the concept of "Make in India".

DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION:

The RF Co-axial cable part number Unirddio 108 is used in Communication and Navigation and Attack systems of Hawk Aircraft. The cable is used in the primary systems of Hawk Aircraft which are used for self defense, involves longer lead time in procurement and heavy foreign exchange. Further to become self reliant and to achieve "Make in India", it was decided to design and manufacture new equivalent cable through local vendors.

The specification and Qualification test schedule were prepared based on the Hawk aircraft requirements and cable requirements and cleared through the certifying agency i.e RCMA (A/C). The conductors were selected based on the properties of the copper and silver plated. The material selected for insulation and

Jacket of the new RF co-axial cable is PTFE tape. The shield is made up of single braided silver plated copper wire. The process of manufacturing the conductor, shield, insulation and Jacket were prepared to get the required RF co-axial cable. The sample was made and checked for their parameters in line with the specifications. Subsequently, the qualification tests were carried out to qualify the product for the stringent atmospheric conditions and the cable is cleared by the regulating authority for use on Hawk Aircraft.

TEST CARRIED OUT:

The newly invented RF co-axial cable part number F108 was checked as per the specification and the cable was meeting the requirements. The samples were — subjected^to^variotis^qualification tests such as spark-test^n sheath; velocity ratio, attenuation, high temperature flexing after heat test, resistance to fluids flammability etc. and found satisfactory. Finally, the functional checks were carried out and the performance of the cable was found satisfactory.

CLAIMS:

1. The long lead time of procurement was overcome by using the new equivalent cable thereby avoiding bottle necks during production and ensuring timely delivery of the Aircraft.
2. Achievement of "Make in India" concept.
