Load Current Sharing And Series Voltage Injection Using Ultra Capacitor Based Hybrid Energy Storage
Abstract: An electrical system and method involving battery, ultra-capacitor and a boost circuitry is disclosed that allows sharing of total load power between battery and ultra-capacitor allowing ultra-capacitor to deliver energy for all high current surges required during engine start, acceleration and absorb high bursts of power during regeneration. The battery is used to supply only low power loads such as accessory loads or to trickle charge ultra-capacitor. In addition, the boost circuitry also obtains a regulated voltage from same ultra-capacitor and allows it to apply a series combination of regulated voltage and batteiy voltage to load such as starter motor or traction motor to extract higher torque assist for engine in a hybrid electric vehicle. The system increases life of battery using Ultra-capacitor, improves Fuel economy due to improved regeneration as a result of effective capture of energy during braking using ultra-capacitor, allows extraction of higher torque from traction motor.
