REFERENCE OF PATENT APPLICATION:
This application is an addition of Indian Patent Application Numbered 201821026237, having filing date of July 13,2018.
Field of Invention
The present invention relates to a tensioner that imparts a predetermined tensile force to a force transmitting member such as a chain or timing belt that drives a camshaft of an engine mounted in a vehicle for e.g. four wheeler automobile or a two wheeled vehicle.
Background of Invention
A tensioner works to maintain constant tension of a timing chain or tinting belt used for an engine of an automobile by pushing the timing chain or belt with a predetermined force if the chain or timing belt becomes loose or slack.
In internal combustion engines, transmission member such as a chain/cam chain is used for transmitting rotation from a crankshaft to one or more valve operating the camshafts. During transmitting the rotation from the driving shaft to a driven shaft i.e. from the crankshaft to one or more valve-operating the camshafts, the chain/cam chain elongates due to the effect of thermal expansion and results into slackening of chain and the like. In order to maintain the tension (tightness) of the chain and/or to overcome the slackening, the use of tensioner is known in the prior art. The
tensioner is placed in proximity to the chain within the engine which applies force on the chain in order to tighten the same.
In general, the tensioner includes a plunger, a spring and a rotary shaft arranged inside the tensioner body. For providing load to the belt or the chain. The rotary shaft is energized by spring force which makes plunger to advance in forward direction. However, since such tensioner is energized by a spring, there are the chances of unexpected advancement of the plunger and projecting it out from the body of the tensioner before its installation on the vehicle as well as it is also to take into consideration at time of uninstalling the tensioner from the vehicle.
For this purpose, the tensioner is provided with a stopper and locking means for stopper in the body which locks the advancement of the plunger.
Object of Invention
The main object of the present invention is to provide a locking means for stopper.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a locking means for stopper which provide an adequate provision for locking.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a locking means for stopper which overcomes drawbacks and shortcomings of prior art.
Summary of Invention
A tensioner for an endless driving elements, according to present invention comprises a body adapted to mount in proximity transmission media; a nut adapted to slidably project out from the opening of the body; a screw adapted to guide the nut which is configured to rotate and deliver an axial motion to nut; a spring acting between the body and the screw to urge the nut in a direction to project out from the opening; a stopper adapted to removably insert in the slit formed in the screw to lock the screw in an inoperative condition; and a retainer. The locking means for stopper includes at least 2 slots, having depth of at least 1 mm, provided in the body.
Brief description of drawings
Various other objects, features and many of the attendant advantages of the present invention will be understood by reference to the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment of the present invention when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 illustrates a cross sectional view of the tensioner according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates a perspective view of tensioner having the slits formed in the tensioner body according to the present invention.
Fig. 3 illustrates a perspective of the tensioner in-operative condition according to the present invention.
Detailed description of Invention
The nature of the invention and the manner in which it works is clearly described in the complete specification. The invention has various embodiments and they are clearly described in the following pages of the complete specification. Before explaining the present invention, it is to be understood that the phraseology and terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.
Now referring to Fig. 1, a tensioner according to present invention comprises a screw (1), a nut (2), a body (3), a spring (4), a retainer (5), a washer (6), a spacer (7), a circlip (8), a cap (9), plug (10) and a stopper (11). Said screw (1) is provided with a slit formed in its head and external threads which engages with the internal threads of the nut (2). One end of the spring (4) is engaged in the slit provide in the screw (1) while other end of the spring (4) is engaged in the slot provided in the body. The washer (6) is placed below the end face of the screw (1), The cap (9) is fitted on the nut by crimping. The circlip (8) holds the retainer (5) placed on the body (3).
Further, said retainer (5), having a particular height, includes lugs being extended outwards from the bottom portion. There are minimum four number of lugs provided. The retainer (5) has projection that extend from the bottom of the retainer. The projection provided on the inside of the retainer restricts the movement of the nut by locking the projection extending from the base of the across flat portion.
Further, said cylindrical body (3) is extended in an either direction perpendicular to the flange. The cylindrical body (3) has at least two number of slots at the top thereof. Said slots in the body (3) are configured to allow the steps provided on the retainer to rest on it. Moreover, the body has grooves cut across its circumference below the top portion of the body. The circlip (8) is inserted in the groove provided on the body. The lug provided on the retainer fits in the slot provided in the body (3) while the circlip (8) which is pre-tensed passes through the lug provided on the retainer (5) and the grooves formed in the body (3). Hence, the circlip (8) which is pre-tensed holds the retainer (5) tightly.
Now as shown in Fig. 2, the slots (12) formed at the bottom of the tensioner body (3). At least six number of slots (12) are formed in the body (3). Said slots (12) are formed circumferentially across a hole of small diameter formed at the bottom of the tensioner body (3). Said slots are formed at a minimum depth of 0.5 mm.
As depicted in Fig. 3, in an in-operative condition of the tensioner, the screw (1) is being engaged with the nut (2) which is rotated with the help of stopper (11). The stopper (11) is used to retract the nut (2). The stopper (11) is engaged in the slots (12) and being provided in the body (3) to restrict the advancement of the screw (2).
The present invention has been described with reference to the specific embodiment, which is merely illustrative and not intended to limit the scope of the present invention, which is defined in the following claims of the complete specification.
