Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION : Electrical harness in aeronautical terminology is generally referred as "Loom". It is a bunch of cables assembled together and finalized with other accessories i.e connectors, back-shells, terminal lugs, relays, circuit breaker, junction modules and earth modules etc. Conventional method to fabricate aircraft loom is to finalize one end of harness on bench and then lay it on aircraft and finalize the other end on aircraft. It requires a lot of co-ordination with other System groups and constant involvement of aircraft area for second end finalization. To remove the involvement of aircraft area and to reduce man-hour involved in fabrication of looms, idea of fabrication of both ends of looms on bench itself is advantageous. Development of loom board for aircraft and cockpit looms resulted in i. Drastic reduction in overall loom fabrication time ii. Total time and cost of loom fabrication is standardized iii. Wastage of bought out items i.e cables, connectors etc is reduced. iv. Reduction in damage of cables on aircraft due to mechanical work. v. Availability of Aircraft for Mechanical work. vi. One time installation of loom on aircraft with very long life. vii. Easy accessibility for maintenance. viii. Easy to update and incorporate any change in design ix. Higher productivity and profit.
INTRODUCTION
Loom (Harness) is a Cable or bunch of Cables assembled with Connectors, Terminals etc and made "ready to install" with protective sleeves. Looms in Aircraft are designed to carry the maximum possible electrical load for the circuit without overheating or causing an unacceptable voltage drop. Looms are usually fabricated on the bench. The wires in Looms are being laced together and identification codes with wire numbers are attached at each end.
BACK GROUND OF INVENTION
In conventional method of Electrical loom fabrication on a Bench, one end of Loom is finalized with extra length of wires on each branch. The other end of branch is finalized on aircraft after laying-up of Loom on the aircraft and trimming to the required size.
This methods has following draw backs :
1. Non-availability of aircraft structure for other activities.
2. Too much wastage of electrical accessories.
3. Numerous human errors.
4. High time and cost involved for loom fabrication.
5. Difficult to implement design changes.
6. Confirmation of compliance as per design document.
To overcome above draw backs, it was decided to Design & Fabricate a customized Loom-Board to
finalize both the ends on bench itself for IJT aircraft.
Loom board is a set-up of exact replica of IJT aircraft electrical wiring layout. Aircraft Loom location and
Routing from nose to tip of aircraft is replicated with 1:1 scale on the Board with provision of actual
cutouts on aircraft for routing.
Identification of all accessories on aircraft is easy with exact location and part number availability.
OBJECTIVE OF THE INVENTION
The objective of Design, Development & Fabrication of Loom Board is to develop a setup for loom
fabrication on bench which is exact replica of IJT aircraft layout from nose to tip in order to reduce the
Man-hour and cost involved in complete fabrication process of loom and to ensure availability of aircraft
for other mechanical work.
DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
AIRCRAFT LOOM BOARD
Loom drawings of IJT aircraft, which accounted for 51 individual looms are clubbed as per their location
in aircraft and one single aircraft loom is charted out. Wooden table is marked with this loom and its
accessories location.
COCKPIT LOOM BOARD
Loom drawings of IJT cockpit, which accounted for 11 individual looms are clubbed as per their location
inside cockpit and one single cockpit loom is charted out. Wooden table is marked with this loom and its
accessories location.
FEATURES OF LOOM BOARDS
1. Location of each Electrical accessory and LRU is identified.
2. Routing path of each wire is identified.
3. Cable lengths are marked.
4. All markings are done with different colour codes for better visualization.
CLAIMS :
We claim that
1. Design and Development of "LOOM BOARD FOR FABRICATION OF AIRCRAFT AND COCKPIT LOOMS OF IJT AIRCRAFT" has been done by IJT-LSP (PG) HAL.
2. Fabrication of Loom Board and its setup have been done by IJT-LSP (PG), HAL
3. Loom Board has been a success as it made possible to significantly reduce cycle time of fabrication of looms.
