Abstract: A luggage carrier for a two-wheeled vehicle is disclosed. The luggage carrier comprises a body member and at least one foldable wing. The body member is securely fixed to a frame body of the two-wheeled vehicle and comprises a first Ushaped tubing member, a second U-shaped tubing member, and at least one leg tubing member. The leg tubing member is adapted to be coupled to an end portion of the first U-shaped tubing member at one end and to an end portion of second U-shaped tubing member at an opposite end. At least one foldable wing is adapted to be coupled to the leg tubing members. Each foldable wing is adapted to be locked in at least one position.
LUGGAGE CARRIER FOR TWO-WHEELED VEHICLES
FIELD OF THE TECHNOLOGY
[0001] The present invention relates to two-wheeled vehicles, and, more particularly,
to luggage carriers for the two-wheeled vehicles.
BACKGROUND
[0002] In some exemplary scenarios, two-wheeled vehicles, such as motorcycles,
scooters, etc. include an arrangement at a rear portion thereof for carrying loads such as
bags, boxes etc. Oftentimes, the two-wheeled vehicles (hereinafter referred to as
'vehicles') may be required to support and carry extra load, sometimes, the rear seat of
the vehicle itself. The vehicles may be provided with larger rear carriers for supporting
and/or carrying the extra loads. However, an appearance of the vehicles may get
deteriorated on account of such large rear carriers. With an ever increasing inclination
towards trendy appearance of the vehicles, the large size rear carriers are not desirable.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, there are a large number of vehicle users that constantly
demand for utility features, such as those equipped to supportfcarry extra load, without
deteriorating an appearance of the vehicle.
[0003] United States Patent 41 13158 titled "Luggage carrier for two-wheel vehicles,
such as bicycles" discloses a rear carrier for two-wheeled vehicles. However, such
arrangements are inconvenient to carry when not in use, also, its fixing to the rear end of
the vehicle is tiring and unwilling job for a vehicle rider.
[0004] Japanese Patent Application number 09-355683 titled "Rear Carrier Device
for Motorcycle" discloses a rear carrier that can expand a loading area of a carrier by
removing rear grip for a fellow passenger attached to a seat. However, in this
arrangement, once the rear grip is removed to expand the loading space, there is no
provision available for a fellow passenger to grip on, which may lead to trip hazards.
Also, it may not be desirable for a rider to connect-disconnect the rear grip for each
loading situation. Further, it may be inconvenient to a user to carry such a removed rear
grip portion.

[0005] Japanese Patent Application number 06-065060 titled "Luggage Carrier of
Motorcycle" discloses an arrangement that comprises a carrier secured to the front cover
of a two wheeler. However, such mechanisms have a sliding surface contact portion,
which is likely to produce noise. Further, the noise may get amplified once the sliding
surface contacts are rusted, which is a likely scenario. Furthermore, such mechanisms are
incapable of firmly supporting the load in normal direction to the front cover.

[0007] In one embodiment, a luggage carrier for a two-wheeled vehicle is provided.
The luggage carrier comprises a body member and at least one foldable wing. The body
member is adapted to be fixed to a frame body of the two-wheeled vehicle. The body
member comprises a first U-shaped tubing member, a second U-shaped tubing member,
and at least one leg tubing member. Leg tubing member is adapted to be coupled to an
end portion of the first U-shaped tubing member at one end and to an end portion of
second U-shaped tubing member at an opposite end. The at least one foldable wing is
slidably and rotatably coupled to the leg tubing member, where the foldable wing is
adapted to be locked in at least one position.

firmly support and carry a variety of loads without deteriorating the aesthetic looks of the
two-wheeled vehicle.

[0030] Figure 1 illustrates a top view of a rear portion of a two-wheeled vehicle (1 00)
employing a luggage carrier according to an embodiment of the present invention. More
specifically, the rear portion of the two-wheeled vehicle (100) (hereinafter referred to as
vehicle (100)) refers to a portion of the vehicle (100) beneath the vehicle seat (06) or
toward rear side of the vehicle seat (06). The rear portion includes a rear frame body
extending in form of two spaced apart opposed elongated legs (12a) and (12b) running
substantially parallel to each other and disposed on opposite sides of an central line of the
vehicle (100). The elongated legs (12a) and (12b) merge in a rearward direction to form
an English alphabet "U" like structure (indicated by numeral (13)). The rear frame body
is depicted to be fiuther strengthened by provision of cross bars (14). Each of the
elongated legs (12a) and (12b) includes a pair of mounting brackets (15a) and (15b) (only
one on each elongated leg is visible in figure 1) securely fixed thereto and adapted to be
attached with the luggage carrier (07) using fastening means, such as bolts. The luggage
carrier (07) is explained in further detail with reference to figures 2 and 3.
[0031] Referring now to figures 2 and 3, a perspective view of the luggage carrier
(07) in an exploded condition and in an assembled condition are depicted, respectively,
according to the present invention. As illustrated in the figures 2 and 3, the luggage
carrier (07) is intended to be disposed on the rear frame body towards rear side of the
vehicle seat (06) or onto the portion of rear frame body which becomes accessible after
removal of the vehicle seat (06).
[0032] The luggage carrier (07) in assembled condition comprises a substantially
rectangular body in form of a body member. The body member comprises a first Ushaped
tubing member (1 8) with the opening towards rear direction of the vehicle (100)
and a second U-shaped tubing member (19) with the opening towards front direction of
the vehicle (100) being connectable using leg tubing members (20a) and (20b). More
specifically, each leg tubing member is adapted to be coupled to an end portion of the
first U-shaped tubing member (18) at one end and to an end portion of second U-shaped
tubing member (19) at an opposite end to define the substantially rectangular structure of
the body member. The body member is securely fixed to a frame body (for example, rear
frame body) of the two-wheeled vehicle (100) as explained with reference to figure 1.
[0033] Referring now to figure 2, each of the first U-shaped tubing member (18) and
the second U-shaped tubing member (19) is provided with pair of brackets (21) having a
flat bed with fixing hole (22a) therethrough and is adapted to be attached, using fastening
means, onto the mounting brackets (15a) and (15b) associated with the elongated legs
(12a) and (12b). In an embodiment, a diameter of the each leg tubing member (20a) and

(20b) is less than a diameter of each of the first U-shaped tubing member (18) and the
second U-shaped tubing member (19). In an embodiment, the each leg tubing member
(20a) and (20b) comprises a bulge (indicated by reference numeral (24)) extending
towards the end coupled to the first U-shaped tubing member (18).
[0034] As best can be seen in the figure 3, at least one first coupling member is
securely fixed, preferably by welding, to the leg tubing members (20a) and (20b). In an
embodiment, two such first coupling members are shown (25a) and (25b) secured fixed
to an intermediate region of the each leg tubing member (20a) and (20b). In an
embodiment, central axial lines of the first coupling members (25a) and (25b) and the
corresponding leg tubing member coincide with each other. In an embodiment, a first
coupling member (for example, the first coupling member (25a)) is securely fixed onto
the corresponding leg tubing member at a portion where from the corresponding leg
tubing member starts bulging. Herein, the portion from where the leg tubing member
starts bulging refers to a portion of the leg tubing member from where the diameter of the
leg tubing member starts gradually increasing till the nearest end of the leg tubing
member.
[0035] In an embodiment, zin outer diameter of first coupling members (25a) and '
(25b) is substantially equal, preferably on lower side, to an outer diameter of the first Ushaped
tubing member (18) and the second U-shaped tubing member (19) so that an
appearance of the luggage carrier (07) is not affected. In an embodiment, each of the first
coupling members (25a) and (25b) comprises at least one longitudinal slot, extending in a
length direction of the vehicle, formed on one side thereto. The longitudinal slots are
explained further with reference to figure 4.
[0036] The luggage carrier (07) further includes at least one foldable wing on either
or both the sides of the vehicle being coupled to the corresponding leg tubing member(s),
(20a) and (20b). As illustrated in the figure 2, the luggage carrier (07) further includes
two such foldable wings (26) and (27). In the figures 1 to 3, the foldable wings (26) and
(27) are depicted to be coupled to the leg tubing members (20a) and (20b). In an
embodiment, either or both the foldable wings (26) and (27) are adapted to be locked in
at least one position. In an embodiment, foldable wings (26) and (27) are adapted to be
locked at a plurality of unfolded positions to accommodate a plurality of luggage sizes as
will be explained herein. A structure and mounting steps for the foldable wings (26) and
(27) are substantially similar and hence description would now be made as to the left
foldable wing (26) alone.
[0037] Referring the figure 2 and figure 3, left foldable wing (26) is a tube body
formed substantially in "U" shape with opening towards the central line of the vehicle
(loo), at least one leg member (26c), at least one second coupling member (27a) and
(27b) coupled to an end portion of a leg member.
[0038] The left foldable wing (26) comprises an elongated U-shaped tube portion
(26a) terminating in an arm portion (26b) on both sides. An embodiment of the left
foldable wing (26) illustrated herein is shown to comprise two leg members (26c), spaced
apart, and adapted to be secured to an intermediate region of the elongated U-shaped tube
portion (26a), the leg members (26c) extend from the elongated U-shaped tube portion
(26a) and runs substantially perpendicular thereto. In some embodiments, the luggage
carrier (07) may comprise a left foldable wing, and/or a right foldable wing that may be
configured in variety of shapes, that are shown in figures 4A, 4B and in figures 5A and
5B and figure 6. For instance, in an embodiment shown in figure 4A, a left foldable wing
(126) comprises an elongated tube portion (126a) that is substantially configured as a
straight bar. In some embodiments, leg members can be formed at any suitable angle
from elongated tube portion of the left foldable wing. For example, in another
embodiment as shown in figure 4B, a left foldable wing (226) is shown where leg
members (226c) are configured at angles other that perpendicular, by which the leg
member (226c) extend from the elongated U-shaped tube portion (26a). Yet another
configuration of a left foldable wing (326) is shown in figure 5A, where leg members
(326c) extend from the elongated U-shaped tube portion (26a) at angles other that
perpendicular. Yet another configuration of a left foldable wing (426) is shown in figure
SB, where instated of a straight or a U-shaped, an angled elongated tube portion (426a) is

employed in the left foldable wing (426). Yet another configuration of a left foldable
wing is shown in figure 6, where leg members (26C) are coupled to the end portions of
the elongated U-shaped tube portion (26a). Accordingly, it should be noted that the left
foldable wing or the right foldable wing may be configured in variety of shapes and
configurations.
[0039] An embodiment of the left foldable wing (26) illustrated here is shown to
comprise two second coupling members (27a) and (27b). The second coupling members
(27a) and (27b) are securely fixed, preferably by welding, to an end portion (for example,
a free end) of the leg members (26c). The second coupling member (27a) is further

and (27b), generally, but not necessarily identical, are hollow body with internal diameter
more than diameter of the corresponding leg tubing member (20a) such that the second
coupling members (27a) and (27b) have free axial as well as rotational movement about
the leg tubing member (20a) upon inserting the leg tubing member (20a) therethrough. In
an embodiment, outer diameter of second coupling members (27a) and (27b) is equal to
the diameter of the first U-shaped tubing member (18) and the second U-shaped tubing
member (19) so that the looks of the luggage carrier (07) do not get deteriorated. In an
embodiment, the outer diameter of second coupling members (27a) and (27b) is different
from each other. In an embodiment, the bigger diameter fiom among the first U shaped
tubing member (1 8) and second U shaped tubing member (19) is equal to or greater than
the biggest diameter fiom among second coupling members (27a) and (27b). Referring
particularly to figure 7, the second coupling members (27a) is shown to include a spring
end (28) at one side and at least one finger like structure, such as finger like structure
(29), formed on the other side. It should be noted that the second coupling member (27b)
also includes similar spring end and finger like structure. In an embodiment, four such
finger like structures (29) are provided on each of the second coupling members (27a)
and (27b). The four finger like structures (29) are adapted to be received by
complimentary longitudinal slots (29a) formed on one end of the first coupling members
(25a) and (25b).

one second coupling members (27a) and (27b) and at least one finger like structures (29)
is provided on at least one first coupling members (25a) and (25b). Also, in an
embodiment, number of such longitudinal slots (29a) may be more as compared to

member (27b) may be similar to the first coupling member (25a) and the second coupling
member (27a), respectively.
[0044] The second coupling member (27a) is depicted to include four finger like
structures (29). It is noted that the second coupling member (27a) may include fewer or
greater number of such finger like structures. The first coupling member (25a) is depicted
to include four complimentary longitudinal slots (29a) for receiving the finger like
structures (29) therein. As can be seen from figure 7, the longitudinal slots (29a) have a
trapezoidal profile while the profile of the finger like structures (29) is made
complimentary to the trapezoidal profile to enable the easy engagement of the both. In an
embodiment, preferably, at least one of the longitudinal slots (29a) is provided on the
horizontal plane passing through the axis of the first coupling member (25a) and such
longitudinal slot (29a) is facing the central line of the vehicle (100) so that the foldable

wings (26) and (27) can be locked in a folded position as shown in the figure 8. The
second coupling member (27a) further includes a spring end (28) as explained with
reference to figures 2 and 3. In an embodiment, the spring end of the second coupling
member (27a) may include a flat base surface. In some embodiments, the spring end (28)
of the second coupling member (27a) is provided with a depression that functions as
spring seat. An assembly and an operation of the luggage carrier (07) are hereinafter
described in the more details.
[0045] Referring now to figure 2 and figure 3, initially, a first coupling member (25a)
is secured fixedly, preferably by welding, onto the leg tubing member (20a) at a portion
from where the leg tubing member (20a) starts bulging. The leg tubing member (20a) is
thereafter inserted through the second coupling member (27a), the first coupling member
(25b) and the second coupling member (27b), and, then the first coupling member (25b)
is welded onto the leg tubing member (20a). An elastic member (30), such as a coil
spring is abuttingly disposed against the spring end (28) of the second coupling member
(27b). Next, a collar (31) is welded onto the leg tubing member (20a) from spring side
which is further inserted inside the second U-shaped tubing member (19) and welded
therein. Since elastic member (30) is now disposed between the second U-shaped tubing
member (19) ahd the second coupling member (27b), the foldable wing (26) can slide in
the vehicle length direction when the external force is applied against the force exhibited
by the elastic member (30).
LO0461 Referring now to figure 8, the luggage carrier (07) with the foldable wings
(26), (27) in folded position is illustrated according to the present invention. The folded
position is assumed when the foldable wings (26), (27) are disposed substantially parallel
to the elongated legs (12a) and (12b), with the elongated U-tube portions (26a) of the
foldable wings (26), (27) lying substantially facing the central line of the vehicle (100).
The foldable wings (26), (27) may be locked in the folded position by using the
interlocking mechanism of the first coupling members (25a), (25b) and the second
coupling members (27a), (27b) as explained with reference to figure 7. An unfolded
position may refer to any position assumed by the foldable wings (26), (27) precluding
the folded position. Each of the foldable wings (26), (27) can assume a plurality of
unfolded positions, such as the positions depicted in figure 9.
[0047] Figure 9 illustrates the luggage carrier (07) with the foldable wings (26), (27)
in unfolded positions according to the present invention. For assuming an unfolded
1 position from among the plurality of unfolded positions, the foldable wing (26) (or (27))
1 may need to be slided in the vehicle length direction by application of an external force
against the force exhibited by the elastic member (30). Upon sliding the foldable wing
(26) towards a rear direction of the vehicle (loo), the corresponding elastic member (30)
get compressed under the external force and the corresponding first coupling members
(25a), (25b) and the second coupling members (27a), (27b) disengage from each other.
The slided foldable wing (26) is fkther rotated about the respective leg tubing member
(for example, the leg tubing member (20a)) to assume an unfolded position, and, to be
subsequently released to facilitate reception of the finger like structure (29) on the second
coupling member (27a), (27b) into the next longitudinal slot of the first coupling
members (25a), (25b) to interlock the foldable wing (26) andlor (27) in the assumed
unfolded position. The foldable wings (26), (27) may be slided and rotated and
subsequently locked in any unfolded positions (such as exemplary positions depicted by
foldable wings (26) and (27) in figure 7 to accoinrnodate a variety of luggage sizes.
[0048] The force of elastic member (30) is maintained such that, under no external
force condition, the first coupling members (25a), (25b) and the second coupling
members (27a), (27b) do not exhibit any substantial axial movement thereby precluding
occurrence of rattling.
[0049] Figure 10 illustrates a luggage carrier, such as the luggage carrier (07), in
accordance with another embodiment of the present invention. In the embodiment
depicted in figure 10, each foldable wing of the foldable wings (26), (27) may preclude
the elongated U-shaped tube portion (26a) and include a flat surface (30) instead. As
explained with reference to figure 1, similar foldable wings as described herein can also
be provided on the elongated portion of the first U-shaped tubing member (18) and 1 or
second U-shaped tubing member (1 9).
[0050] Figure 11 illustrates a luggage carrier, such as the luggage carrier (07), in
accordance with yet another embodiment of the present invention. In the embodiment
depicted in figure 1 1, an elastic member (33) such as coil spring can also be provided
between first coupling member (25b) and second coupling member (27a). In some
embodiments, only one of the two elastic members (33) and (30) may be provided for
facilitating sliding of the foldable wings (26) and (27).
LO05 11 The luggage carrier (07) can also be disposed on the rear frame body beneath
the vehicle seat (06), so that in case of two-wheeled vehicles where rear seat is
removable, the space on the rear frame body can be expanded by unfolding the foldable
wings (26) and (27) to mount the luggage. The vehicle seat (06) can again be mounted
once the folded wings (26) and (27) are in the folded position. In an embodiment, the

vehicle seat (06) can also be mounted when foldable wings (26) and (27) are in unfolded
position. Further, as shown in the figure 8, stopper (35) can be disposed on the elongated
legs (12a) and (12b) beneath the vehicle seat (06) to obstruct the luggage from contacting
a rider of the two-wheeled vehicle when the luggage is mounted onto the luggage carrier
(07) subsequent to the removal of the vehicle seat (06). In some embodiments, the
luggage carrier (07) can be used as a grab member that can be grabbed by a rider to push
the vehicle (100) in a backward direction at the time of parking the vehicle (100) on a
main stand.
[0052] Without in any way limiting the scope, interpretation, or application of the
claims appearing below, advantages of one or more of the exemplary embodiments
disclosed include provision of a luggage carrier, such as the luggage carrier (07), for twowheeled
vehicles that provides extra space to firmly support and carry a variety of load
without deteriorating the aesthetic looks of the vehicle. The luggage carrier is adapted to
be unfolded to expand a loading space for the two-wheeled vehicle. Further, the luggage
carrier can be selectively operated in response to different sizes and orientation of the
load. The luggage carrier is also easy to operate and is noise-free. The luggage carrier can
also be, optionally, mounted on the rear frame body of the two-wheeled vehicle beneath
the vehicle seat, preferably the rear seat, and can be unfolded when the vehicle seat is
removed.

of this invention, it will be appreciated that various modifications can be made, and that
many changes can be made in the preferred embodiments without departing from the
principles of the invention. These and other modifications in the nature of the invention
or the preferred embodiments will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the
disclosure herein, whereby it is to be distinctly understood that the foregoing descriptive
matter is to be interpreted merely as illustrative of the invention and not as a limitation.
CLAIMS
What is claimed is:
1. A luggage carrier for a two-wheeled vehicle, comprising:
a body member adapted to be fixed to a rear frame body of the two-wheeled
vehicle, the body member comprising:
a first U-shaped tubing member,
a second U-shaped tubing member, and
at least one leg tubing member, the leg tubing member adapted to be
coupled to an end portion of the first U-shaped tubing member at one end and to an
end portion of second U-shaped tubing member at an opposite end; and
at least one foldable wing slidably and rotatably coupled to the leg tubing
member, wherein the foldable wing is adapted to be locked in at least one position.
2. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first U-shaped tubing
member and the second U-shaped tubing member are adapted to be attached onto
the frame body of the two-wheeled vehicle.
3. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 1, wherein the at least one leg tubing
member is securely fixed to the end portion of at least one of the first U-shaped
tubing member and the second U-shaped tubing member.
4. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 3, wherein the at least one leg tubing
member comprises at least one first coupling member securely fixed onto the at
least one leg tubing member.
5. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 4, wherein each of the at least one
first coupling member comprises at least one longitudinal slot formed on one side
thereto.
6. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 1, wherein the foldable wing
comprises:
an U-shaped tube portion,
at least one leg member extending from intermediate region of the U-shaped
tube portion, and
at least one second coupling member, wherein the at least one second
coupling member is securely fixed to an end portion of the at least one leg member,
and wherein the at least one second coupling member is slidably and rotatbly
coupled to the leg tubing member.
7. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 6, wherein the at least one second
coupling member have axial movement and rotational movement about the at least
one leg tubing member upon inserting the corresponding at least one leg tubing
member therethrough.
8. The luggage carrier as claimed in claims 6 or 7, wherein the at least one
second coupling member comprises a spring end at one side and at least one finger
like structure formed on the other side.
9. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 6, wherein the at least one second
coupling member comprises at least one finger like structures for facilitating
interlocking of the at least one first coupling member and the at least one second
coupling member.
10. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 9, wherein the at least one first
coupling member and the at least one second coupling member are adapted to
substantially preclude relative rotational movement with respect to each other upon
interlocking thereof.
11. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 9, further comprising an elastic
member abuttingly disposed against the spring end of the at least one second
coupling member at one end and against the second U-shaped tubing member at an
opposite end.
12. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 11, wherein upon sliding the at least
one foldable wing towards a rear direction of the two-wheeled vehicle, the
corresponding elastic member gets compressed under the external force and the
corresponding at least one first coupling member and the at least one second
coupling member are adapted to disengage from each other.
13. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 12, wherein the slided foldable wing
is rotated about the respective leg tubing member to assume an unfolded position,
and, is subsequently released to facilitate reception of the at least one finger like
structure of the at least one second coupling member into the at least one
longitudinal slot of the at least one first coupling member to interlock the foldable
wing in the unfolded position.
14. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 11, wherein the elastic member is a
coil spring.
15. The luggage carrier as claimed in claims 1 or 3 or 8, comprising a collar
securely fixed at one end to the at least one leg tubing inember and at other end to
an end portion of the second U-shaped tubing member.
16. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 1, wherein the at least one foldable
wing comprises a flat surface.
17. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 1, wherein the luggage carrier is
adapted to be disposed on the rear frame body beneath the vehicle seat.
18. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 17, comprising a stopper disposed to
obstruct the luggage from contacting a rider of the two-wheeled vehicle when the
luggage is mounted onto the luggage carrier subsequent to the removal of the
vehicle seat.
19. The luggage carrier as claimed in the claim 5, wherein the longitudinal slot
has a trapezoidal profile.
20. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 1, wherein a folded position of the
foldable wing is assumed when the foldable wing is disposed substantially parallel
to the rear frame body with the elongated U-tube portion of the foldable wing lying
substantially facing a central line of the two-wheeled vehicle.
21. The luggage carrier as claimed in claims 1 or 20, the foldable wing is
configured to assume an unfolded position, wherein the unfolded position is any
other position acquired by the foldable wing other than the folded position.
22. The luggage carrier as claimed in claims 1 or 4 or 6, wherein a bigger
diameter fiom among the first U shaped tubing member and second U shaped
tubing member is equal to or greater than the biggest diameter from among the at
least one first coupling member and the at least one second coupling member.
23. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 1, wherein the foldable wing
comprises:
a straight tube portion,
at least one leg member extending from the straight tube portion, and
at least one second coupling member, wherein the at least one second coupling
member is securely fixed to an end portion of the at least one leg member, and
wherein the at least one second coupling member is slidably and rotatbly coupled to
the leg tubing member.
24. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 1, wherein the foldable wing
comprises:
an angled tube portion,
at least one leg member extending fiom the angled tube portion, and
at least one second coupling member, wherein the at least one second coupling
member is securely fixed to an end portion of the at least one leg member, and
wherein the at least one second coupling member is slidably and rotatbly coupled to
the leg tubing member.
25. The luggage carrier as claimed in claims 1 or 23 or 24, wherein the at least
one leg member extends substantially parallel or in angled fashion.
26. The luggage carrier as claimed in claim 1, wherein the at least one leg
tubing member is adapted to be attached onto the frame body of the two-wheeled
vehicle.
