Method And Apparatus To Capture Mild Sticker Patterns In Breakout Systems For Continuous Slab Casting

Abstract: In steel making process, continuous casting is a very critical section wherein liquid steel is converted into steel slabs. In the vertically oscillating mould, liquid steel heat is extracted by out layered coolant channels. In this process sometimes the liquid steel comes in contact with mould copper plate due to improper mould powder distribution and sticks, as rollers pulls the strand it will tear and liquid steel flows out - this is called as breakout and this specific type is called as “sticker” breakout. Breakouts in steel casters are a catastrophic phenomenon, which stalls the down stream process and damages the equipment. Thermocouple based breakout prevention systems are installed in continuous casters worldwide. Strong “sticker” type profiles can be easily detected by the temperature patterns of the thermocouples, but it is difficult to capture mild – stickers. The mild-sticker patterns shows less in strength but may lead to breakout and in contrary, strict measures may increase the false alarms. A method to capture these mild-stickers by the temperature patterns of thermocouples has been invented. This method decides based on the past instances temperatures of the thermocouples and specific patterns.
