Method And System For Creating Three Dimensional Maps Using Two Dimensional Lidar Sensors

Abstract: A system and method for creating three-dimensional map is disclosed. The system (100) includes a LIDAR device (102) mounted on a base (104), which is inclined at a base angle. One or more sensors (106) are configured to measure sensor data. A processing unit (108) performs an initial scan of an environment using the LIDAR device (102), receives the sensor data, and creates a two-dimensional map using the initial scan data and the sensor data. The LIDAR device (102) is tilted by incrementing or decrementing the base angle between a maximum threshold angle and a minimum threshold angle. The processing unit (108) captures scan data using the LIDAR device (102) at each incremented or decremented base angle and converts the scanned data into point cloud format. The processing unit (108) creates a three-dimensional map of the environment using the two-dimensional map and the point cloud format. FIG. 2
