"Method For Off Line Determination Of Optimal Transmission Gear For A Vehicle"

Abstract: A method for off-line determination of optimal gear of a vehicle, comprising: obtaining throttle-performance data of an engine based on desired combinations of engine speed and throttle position. Gear transmission torque is calculated based on gear ratio and engine torque from the obtained throttle performance data. Actual engine speed for each gear is calculated with respect to vehicle speed, which varies from minimum to maximum speed of the vehicle. Determination is made whether the actual engine speed falls within an operating range of the engine. The throttle performance data is interpolated with the actual engine speed, if the actual engine speed falls within the operating range of the engine. Determination is made whether all actual engine speed are computed in the throttle performance data. The gear transmission torque and specific fuel consumption (SFC) from the throttle-performance data are identified and compared with respect to the actual engine speed at different throttle positions, if all actual engine speed are computed in the throttle performance data. Optimal gear corresponding to the vehicle speed and the throttle position is determined in accordance with an operating mode of said engine. Thus, the method provides optimal gear table for real-time communication of optimal gear during transportation, which eliminates the need of complex calculations involved in obtaining optimal gear by performing on-line computations with real-time vehicle parameters. The present invention specifically relates to a method for off-line determination of optimal transmission gear for a vehicle. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION In general, vehicle engine performance is a primary focus of automotive development, where the engine performance mainly depends on optimal gear shifting. Optimal gear shifting includes shifting gears within a range of maximum engine power, which enables the vehicle to maintain an optimal rate of acceleration and avoid overburdening the vehicle engine. Normally, a manual transmission shifts gears according to an operation of a driver. In such manual transmission, the driver can select any gear, i.e. gear ratio.
