Abstract: ABSTRACT Embodiments herein provide a method of sustaining a dedicated connection with a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) terminal by a portable base station. The method includes sending a system information (SI) message including a master information block (MIB) and a plurality of system information blocks (SIBs) to the UMTS terminal. The portable base station is external to a core network. The method includes establishing a connection with the UMTS terminal in a dedicated channel (DCH). Further, the method includes receiving a non-access stratum (NAS) initial direct transfer (IDT) message indicating a core network (CN) domain type from the UMTS terminal through the established connection in the DCH. Furthermore, the method includes sending a paging type 2 message with a CN domain type other than the CN domain type indicated in the IDT message, after storing unique identifiers associated with the UMTS terminal.
