Modified Indian Type Water Closet System

Abstract: In the conventional Indian water closet (1WC) system, the closet is placed over the trap. Hence, lowering or raising of floor of the toilet for about 450mm is needed at upper floors. Due to the use of filling material, the structure size increases. Raised floor leads to discomfort. In due course the sunken slab gets corroded and sediments choked in the outlet of trap which prevents free flow. The toilet is dismantled while replacement of trap is needed. An alternative system is suggested to overcome the said disadvantages. The passage way of closet is made horizontal instead of downward and the trap is shifted to the outside wall of toilet. Extension pipe is connected from closet to the end of outer wall. One end of trap is connected to extension pipe and other end is connected to the service pipe. This saves cost, time and maintenance friendly.

DESCRIPTION:-

Introduction:-

Two types of water closets are used for toilets, one is Indian water closet (IWC) and the other is European water closet (EWC). Generally IWC is preferred by almost all people except aged and sick persons who may prefer EWC.

Existing type of IWC:-

In the Conventional IWC, 'P' or'S' trap is fixed below the closet. This arrangement needs about 450mm depth to accommodate the closet over the trap i.e. from bottom of the trap to the top of closet. In case of upper floors, to maintain the top of closet and floor of toilet room at the same level, there are two options. One option is raising the floor level of the toilet about 450mm from the top of floor slab and the other option is lowering the floor slab of toilet room about 450mm at the time of construction itself.

Disadvantages of the existing system:-

In both the cases of lowering and raising of the toilet, filling materials are required.. Due to additional load of filling materials slab thickness, beam depth, size of column and footing size are increased. Especially in multi- storied buildings, total load may be enormous at foundation level, when compared to other columns. Therefore additional quantity of concrete, reinforcing bars, centering materials, filling materials and labourers are required for which additional cost is incurred. Users feel discomfort due to the presence of steps in raised floors. In due course water may get stagnated in sunken slab and the slab gets corroded. Gradually night soil sediment chokes in the out-let passage of trap. Hence after sometime necessity arises to replace the trap. For replacing the trap, flooring and water closet have to be dismantled though they are in sound condition. It is not only more expensive but also users are facing more in convenient. If the water closet is not properly flushed-out, human wastes may stagnate in the trap which give ugly scene and produce foul odour.

Salient features of the modified system:-

In the modified Indian water closet, the movement of the human waste will be horizontal and straight with suitable slope up to the end of closet instead of downward movement.

Closet is having plain finish (without groove) with flush water source either from front or rear with small holes to facilitate free and wider flow of water. To. suit site condition either one is adopted. Provision of front end hole is preferable for flush water connection.

Trap is shifted outside the toilet room instead of providing underneath of the closet. Extension pipe with provision of socket at one end made by either porcelain or PVC pipe which is to be connected with closet and other end with inlet end of trap either by 'L' bow or directly to the inlet end by providing socket in the trap suitably. Outlet of trap is connected to the service pipe and bottom of service pipe is to be connected to inspection chamber.

Modified closet may be fixed 150mm above floor level of toilet room with extension pipe and suitable slope to be provided. This height may not make any difference for usage of toilet.

Advantages.-

1. In this system either raising or lowering the floor is not needed.

2. Floor slab of toilet room will be cast at the same level on par with other rooms, which facilitates easy bar bending, shuttering, concreting and thereby the associated complications due to sunken floor are avoided.

3. In due course any block occurs in trap it can be easily replaced without dismantling floor of the toilet and closet, since trap is provided out-side of toilet.

4. Filling materials in toilet room are completely avoided and thereby due to the additional dead load increase in size of slab, beam, column and footing is avoided.

5. Due to lack of flush-out sometimes human waste stagnate in trap, which gives ugly scene and foul odour is avoided, since the trap is provided economically out side of the toilet.

6. Discomfort, in raised floor with steps and corrosion of floor slab due to leakage in sunken floor are avoided.

7. Construction and maintenance are easy and cost is considerably reduced, there by proves cost- effective.

8. It is more hygienic.

9. The cost is considerably reduced by avoiding filling materials, decrease in size of structure, sunken slab and casting of floor slab at different levels.

10. Saving in the cost of closet when compared to European closet.

11. Water pressure will be more.

I claim the following

1) In the modified type of water closet, the passage way is made straight with
suitable slope upto the end of closet.

2) Extension pipe with the provision of socket at one end either porcelain or PVC about 400mm length and 100mm diameter is used.

3) The trap is separated from closet and fixed outside of toilet. Thus, not only overall depth is reduced but also raising the floor level or lowering the floor slab is eliminated.
Trap can be easily replaced if needed.

4) The closet is having plain finish (without groove) with flush water source either from front or from rear with small holes to facilitate free flow of water. To suit site condition either one is used (front end is preferable).

5) Night soil sediments and urine from closet goes horizontally through extension pipe to the trap. Visibility of sediments and foul odour will not be there since the trap is provided ergonomically, outside the toilet.

6) In this system increase in the size of structure, additional load and leakage are
avoided.

7) The floor slabs are cast in same level so that shuttering, bar bending and concreting are made easy thereby the associated complications are avoided.

8) The cost is considerably reduced by avoiding fill, decrease in size of structure, sunken slab and casting of floor slab at different levels.
