Modular Assembly Concept For Centre Fuselage Of Lca

Abstract: LCA Tejas Centre fuselage Assembly is built using one single Jig This Assembly consists 809 fabricated parts which includes Machine Parts, Sheet Metal parts & CFC parts. Present cycle time required for assembly of Centre Fuselage is 150 days approximately. To reduce build cycle time and enhance the rate on production, a process for modular assembly concept has been evolved. By adopting this process or concept, 16 sub-assemblies can be made in parallel which are independent of Centre Fuselage Main Jig. These 16 assemblies would be directly fitted in to the main Jig as the sub-assemblies are coordinated with Main Jig.

The invention describes a process for Modular Assembly Concept for Centre Fuselage of LCA

BACKGROUND

LCA Tejas Aircraft structural fuselage is divided into three major modules; namely Front fuselage, Centre fuselage and Rear fuselage. The concept described here is the process for modular assembly of Centre fuselage.

Centre fuselage begins from station # 21 (X=6450) to station #30 (X=9360). It includes Fl bottom fuel tank (#21-#24), Fl top fuel tank (#22-#24) and F2 fuel tank (#24-#30), Main Landing Gear (MLG), Wing pick up points (#26 & #30), Spine assembly (#21-#30), GSH Gun (23mm), Hard points for carrying LDP (Laser Designated Pod- #21-#23), Ventral Pylon(#22,#26) and Ammunition Box (#24-#25).

The present process of Centre Fuselage assembly build consist of 63 Activities. All the 63 activities are being carried out on a one single Main Jig which requires a cycle time of 120 days. As the requirements of the aircraft is large and it necessitates to go for enhancement of rate of production through Modular Assembly concept.

INVENTION

The total present 63 activities of Centre fuselage assembly build has been studied thoroughly and identified certain assemblies where it can be split into sub-assemblies and the sub-assemblies can be integrated with main Assembly Jig with proper locating media. There are such 16 sub-assemblies identified in Centre fuselage to reduce the cycle time.

Total Assembly Hour involved is 1635 HRs

Expected Net Cycle time saving on Main Assembly Jig is Based on Critical Path = 112+195 =307 hrs

Expected Cycle time saving = 307/2*7.5= 20 Days
