[001] The present disclosure relates to monitoring of waste landfills. More precisely, the present invention relates to monitoring of municipal sanitary landfills using optical satellite images.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[002] The background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
[003] In 1997, a collapse occurred in Doña Juana Sanitary Landfill and resulted in health problems to the inhabitants residing nearby the landfill. Norms or modifications have been applied for the application of delimitations to this dump using Landsat 5 TM images which were obtained in 1997 and Landsat 8 OLI of 2015, method by which it is sought to determine the level of growth of the areas which were affected by the landslide of 1997.
[004] Sanitary landfills continue to be a very special issue for the management of municipal governments, which is why there are many studies on their design. A sanitary landfill and a material segregating plant can be designed that are reusable and environmentally safe on solid waste from the urban area of the Santiago de Chuco - La Libertad district. After an investigation on bibliographic data and satellite images of the area along with basic studies including evaluation of the integral management of municipal solid waste, a characterization study, a reference study of the site and an identification, evaluation and mitigation of the possible environmental impacts of the project as a result of this investigation, the trench or trench method was used to design the sanitary landfill and segregation plant with a total area for the landfill of 14407 m2, 1.5 hectares, with 29 trenches.
[005] Cities produce a large amount of solid waste, many of them carry out recycling processes to minimize the amount of waste, but there is still a large amount that is sent clandestinely to dumps that are located on the outskirts of cities, they are usually called “Municipal dumps”, as cities grow in size as well as the number of inhabitants, these dumps grow and in some cases, the distance between the dumps and the cities becomes very close, which generates a danger to the public health of the cities due to the emission of gases, toxic smoke, flies, parasites among other agents that generate these dumps.
[006] There is therefore a need in the art to provide a process of monitoring and controlling the final disposal of solid waste produced by cities, the temporary monitoring of the "municipal dumps".

OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
[007] Some of the objects of the present disclosure, which at least one embodiment herein satisfies are as listed herein below.
[008] The principal object of this invention is to temporarily analyze and verify the growth of the dumps.
[009] Another object of this invention is to temporarily monitor municipal dumps and evaluate its growth using satellite images.

[0020] Exemplary embodiments will now be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which exemplary embodiments are shown. This invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein. These embodiments are provided so that this invention will be thorough and complete and will fully convey the scope of the invention to those of ordinary skill in the art. Moreover, all statements herein reciting embodiments of the invention, as well as specific examples thereof, are intended to encompass both structural and functional equivalents thereof. Additionally, it is intended that such equivalents include both currently known equivalents as well as equivalents developed in the future (i.e., any elements developed that perform the same function, regardless of structure).
[0021] While embodiments of the present invention have been illustrated and described, it will be clear that the invention is not limited to these embodiments only. Numerous modifications, changes, variations, substitutions, and equivalents will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without departing from the scope of the invention, as described in the claim.
[0022] Fig. 1 illustrates a block diagram of the proposed methodology of verifying the growth of dumps by temporarily analyzing satellite images. This aids in monitoring and controlling the final disposal of solid waste produced by cities, the temporary monitoring of the "municipal dumps". Thus, the growth of the municipal dump is evaluated by maintaining a database of the satellite images of the dump at different time periods.
[0023] In an embodiment, the area of interest or the location of the dump is located. As shown in figure 2, the area of interest is located in an image search map of a Lansat catalog. The satellite images are downloaded from a Lansat satellite.
[0024] As shown in figure 3, the downloaded image of the area of interest is further segmented in the area of the interest to be analyzed by using a fundamental characteristic of the resolution of the image that has a metric characteristic. However, the image cannot present levels of detail of the image and requires a greater coverage of the terrain. The satellite image is presented in the Natural Colour configuration, where the dump is seen, one of the characteristics of the dumps is the constant burning of the waste, which can be evidenced in the image, a problem for people's health is the smoke that it generates as well as the aerosols that are emitted into the air at the time of incineration.
[0025] In an embodiment, the temporal analysis of the satellite images is carried out by searching, downloading and analyzing images on different dates of the same area of interest, depending on the dynamism of the dump and the availability of the images, the temporal analysis can be carried out, it is at this stage that the perimeters of the dumps are analyzed to calculate the affected area and how it is moving towards the nearest population.
[0026] In an embodiment, the present method can be implemented in different geographical situations. Moreover, the present invention does not depend on other systems, only to be able to count on the registration of the image of the area to be analyzed, in the use of satellite images, there are temporary records that all the planet, so it can be used without problems in any city.
[0027] In an embodiment, the present method uses satellite images. Though Google Earth images as shown in Figure 4 can be used to record the images of the dump areas, it has a disadvantage as it is difficult to download several images of the same area of interest at different time periods.
[0028] As shown in Figure 5, the satellite image of the area of interest, where the markings of the areas of interest were made, where there is the presence of the dump, it is important for the methodology, to be able to corroborate the information presented with the image, with a register of the area in order to confirm the use of land cover, as well as to calculate an index related to solid waste.
[0029] As shown in Figure 6, the advantages of satellite images compared to Google images can be seen. The satellite image can be enlarged without affecting its resolution, it is with this feature that the perimeter of the dump can be delimited to in order to be able to calculate the area that is affected, as well as the registration of the perimeter and the area it occupies, it is important to indicate that a new image of the area of interest should be sought in the image catalog for analysis with respect to the image analyzed with an earlier date.
[0030] In an embodiment, in the analysis of the satellite images, it is necessary to take into account the colour model to be used, for which in a normal situation it is possible to work with the natural colour model, but depending on the record, combinations can be made between the different bands and be able to analyze them to determine which of the combinations is the most suitable for the analysis of the dumps.
[0031] In an embodiment, the results reached at the end of the research is characterized by the use of satellite images to analyze the process of the use of land cover, in our particular case, the issue is related to the study to analyze the dynamism of the dumps, more known as municipal garbage dumps, it is concluded that in cases where cloud cover cannot be recorded in the area of interest, the image with the closest date should be located.
[0032] In an embodiment, the analysis is carried out taking into consideration a combination of standard bands so that subsequent analyzes can be performed with the same colour configuration, it is an important issue to be able to delimit the area of interest, as indicated in figure 6, Because you want to analyze the dynamism of the image, for this reason being able to determine a special area and be able to weaken it helps its subsequent analysis to be able to check if it is growing or in another trend, due to a characteristic of the populations, the presence of the increase in solid waste produced by cities, which is why it is important to be able to know to what degree the dump is growing and even more so how it may be impacting people's health.
