Specification

FIELD OF INVENTION:
The present invention in general relates to an article for repelling mosquitoes and
other insects. The present invention in particular relates to insectJ mosquito
repellant composition impregnated in a shoe sole.
DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART:
Insects can be a major source of irritation to people involved in outdoor activities
such as sports, walking and the like. Insects, particularly mosquitoes, carry many
different kinds of diseases including malaria, heartworm, dengue fever,
encephalitis, yellow fever and West Nile virus.
Because of the health concerns and dis~omfort related to insect bites and stings,
insecticides or repellents are commonly used to keep insects away from animals,
plants and building structures. Most conventional mosquito repellents contain
DEET, a chemical that is toxic to a variety of flying and biting insects and has
raised questions about its safety for people. Some people experience irritation and
dermatitis or an allergic reaction to DEET-containing products and DEET is toxic
and potentially fatal if swallowed. It can also cause permanent eye damage. high
doses or long-term exposure have been associated with neurological damage.
DEET is known to damage some plastics and synthetic fabrics, such as nylon and
acetate, and so clothing or camping equipment can be destroyed. Further, these
commercial repellents are typically only effective at repelling insects for up to 4
hours.
Due to the health concerns of DEET there has been an increased interest in
"organic" or natural pest repellents. Some essential oil$ have shown to be
effective in varying degrees at repelling a variety of insects. Clove oil, catnip oil
and evening primrose oil, for example, have been shown to repel mosquitoes.
Publication No. KR20030012573 describes a method of making shoes generating
mosquito smoke by putting citronella oil in the porous soles so that the mosquito
smoke is generated while walking.
US Patent No. 7985432 provides compositions for repelling insects from target
areas. The compositions comprise an effective amount of evening primrose oil
("EPO") to repel a target pest from a target area, such as animals, humans, plants
• -3-
or building structures, along with a carrier. The repellent composition may
include a combination of EPO with plant extract oil and a combination of EPO
with catnip oil, optionally combined with plant extract oil.
However, these and other combinations of essential oils tend to either not be as
effective as DEET or only effectively repel insects for a short period of time and
so need to be reapplied frequently.
In view ofthe above prior arts, there is a need to provide a composition useful for
effectively repelling pests. The composition should be long lasting and should not
cause any toxicity to humans or animals.
Therefore, the present invention provides a shoe sole impregnated with natural
repellents for effectively repelling mosquitoes and other insects away without any
potential health concerns.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION:
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an insect repellant
composition impregnated in shoe sole which is effective in repelling mosquitoes
and other biting insects.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a mosquito repellent shoe
sole which has a long lasting effect.
Yet another object ofthe present invention is to provide a mosquito repellent shoe
sole which uses only natural repellents.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a mosquito repellent
shoe sole which does not have any potential health concerns of synthetic or
inorganic repellents.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
The present invention relates to the mosquito/insect repellent shoe sole
impregnated with mosquito/insect repellent composition comprising citronella oil
• -4-
and thuja oil. The invention provides a cost effective method for effectively
repelling mosquitoes and other insects and it does not have any potential health
concerns ofrepellents containing inorganic or synthetic active ingredients.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the insect repellant
composition for shoe sole comprises of3% citronella oil and 2% thuja oil.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the insect repellant
composition for shoe sole comprises the citronella oil in the range of 1-4% and
thuja oil in the range of 1-3%.
In yet another embodiment of the present invention, the insect repellant
composition is prepared by mixing the composition comprising master batch of
3% citronella oil and 2% thuja oil.
In still another embodiment of the present invention the insect repellant
composition is fmally fed evenly to raw material in rolling drums.
In yet another embodiment of the present invention the shoe sole raw material
is preferably made ofpolyuthrene (PU) or polyvinyl resin (PVR).
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS:
Accordingly the present invention provides the mosquito/insect repellent shoe
sole impregnated with mosquito/insect repellent composition comprising
citronella oil and thuja oil. The composition preferably comprises 3% citronella
oil and 2% thuja oil. The shoe sole is preferably made of polyuthrene (PU) or
polyvinyl resin (PVR). The composition has a long lasting effect and is capable of
repelling mosquitoes from a larger area. The invention provides a cost effective
method for effectively repelling mosquitoes and other insects and it does not have
any potential health concerns ofrepellents containing inorganic or synthetic active
ingredients.
Citronella oil is obtained from the leaves and stems of different species of
Cymbopogon. It is found mainly in some Asian countries and some islands of
-5-
Asia Pacific. Citronella is anti bacterial, anti septic, anti spasmodic, anti
inflammatory, deodorant, diaphoretic, diuretic, febrifuge, insect repellent and
stomachic. These properties of citronella oil make it much diversified oil which
can be used in numerous ways
Thuja oil, also known as cedar leaf oil, is sweet-smelling oil with similarities to
camphor. In appearance, thuja oil ranges from a clear yellow to being completely
colorless. It is drawn from the thuja occidenta/is, or eastern white cedar, a tree
native to the northeast portion of North America. Thuja oil has a strong, pleasant
smell, which is why it often is used as a component in perfumes, colognes and
other health and beauty products such as cosmetics, soaps and toiletries. Its aroma
makes it a popular choice for scenting household cleaners, furniture and shoe
polish. It also is a natural insect repellant and is used in some pesticides and
repellant products.
The tree itself is a sturdy evergreen conifer closely related to the larger western
red cedar. It has been cultivated as an ornamental plant and is primarily used for
screens and hedgerows but also is grown and cut for lumber. Unlike many other
conifers, the leaves of the eastern white cedar are not needle-shaped but are dark
green, scaly fingers splayed in a flat fan shape. Thuja oil is drawn from these
leaves.
It is believed that all the essential oils can be balanced into a formula that destroys
the cuticle or protective membrane of an insect. In this way, the insect
formulation made by using essential oil can be repelled and actually killed by
prolonged exposure to the product. The insects avoid scents and substances that
will kill them, and accordingly that is why the formulation repels so effectively.
Moreover the insects recognize that they have to leave the area or die. It is the
manner in which insects have survived for millions ofyears.
As noted above, the characteristics of the individual oils are maintained in the
disclosed formulatidn, to the end that wide range insects are repelled. As
examples, citronella oil repels mosquitoes and gnats.
Insect repellent formulations embodying the invention accordingly are highly
effective, are "all natural," and, in addition, have virtually unlimited shelf life.
-6-
The method for making the shoes insect repellant composition as described below - the
formulation comprising 3%Cetronilla oil+ 2% Thuja oil is fed into the rolling drums
where the oil is mixed with the plastic polymer. Once processed, the soles emit fragrance
which is repellent in nature. The aroma is detected by any of the standard equipments
available in market which read aroma. With the help of one such equipment the aroma of
the composition is detected till 18 feet. Hence, the composition is effective for repelling
insects upto 18 feet.
Numerous modifications and adaptations of the system of the present
invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and thus it is intended
by the appended claims to cover all such modifications and adaptations
which fall within the true spirit and scope of this invention.
