DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE
ACCOMPANYING FIGURES
The present invention is directed to provide movable cross arm mounted pole
lighting system for installation in street/garden lighting wherein unlike the
conventional fixed arm, movable arms are mounted at the top of the pole for
holding the lamps, which can be brought down to ground level by operating a
lever mounted at bottom of pole, for maintenance work as and when necessary.
The movable arm based pole mounted lighting system according to the present
invention consists of assembly of following components:
(i) a hollow pole,
(ii) cross arms (on which the lights are fitted) fixed in such a
manner such that these cross arms become movable instead of the normally
fixed one,
(Mi) a system of levers inbuilt in the hollow pole for swinging,
down the movable cross arm and
(iv) electrical control gear for the light fittings mounted in a
cabinet besides the hollow pole.
After the maintenance work is carried out on the light fittings, the cross arms
can be raised back to the normal height.
Accordingly movable cross arm based pole lighting system of this invention
helps in bringing down the light fitting to the ground level for maintenance &
after maintenance to take it back to its original position without the use of
any ladder or trolley.

Accompanying Figure 1 shows the fixed arm based conventional arrangement
for street lighting pole. As already stated, the maintenance persons has to ride
on ladder to approach the light mounted on the fixed arm at top of pole which
require more time and manpower and involves hazards of unsafe working at
high altitude.
Accompanying Figures. 2 and 3 provides two views of the movable arm
arrangement of the pole mounted lighting system according to the present
invention which includes all the necessary arrangement required for movement
of the arms including the operating lever arrangement and sling attachment with
movable arm for the movable cross arm based pole lighting system according to
the present invention.
In accompanying Figure 3 some of the details of the sling connection of lever
and movable arm and guide bracket to mount the movable arm are shown. To
avoid rain water entering the pole and adversely affecting the lever mechanism,
a top cover plate is fixed on top of the pole as shown in Figure 3.
It is thus possible by way of the present invention to provide a movable arm
based pole lighting system which comprise of the following constructional
features:
In a preferred embodiment of movable arm based pole lighting system according
to the present invention as shown in accompanying Figure 2 , a hollow tubular
pole(P) of about 150mm dia is erected on ground with grouting and is about 6
meters high from ground level. It has two guide brackets(G) attached to two
diametric opposite sides. There are two metal tube made cross arms(A) suitably
bent to hold the light fittings/lamp at the outer end and a fulcrum support(F) to
hold the arms at the other end adjacent to the pole within the guide bracket with
bolt connection such that the arm can swing against fulcrum support to move
the lighting(L) up or down in a vertical plane. The Arm guide plate/bracket
provide support and guidance of the arm movement. An Operating lever(L)

assembly is to help the pole arm to be lifted up and down through the attached
sling rope(S). The lever(L) is mounted with operating lever control gear box(CG)
with fulcrum support such that the lever can be operated up or down against the
fulcrum by applying force with hand at the outer end and the sling rope attached
to the lever at lower end and with cross arm at the upper end enable swinging
movement of the cross arm with the light fittings. There are two sets of lever
assembly to operate two cross arms independently. The arm guide plate(G) is
used to guide the movable arm to move in a particular direction and support the
arm and keep it at the desired height and angle. Operating control gear box(CG)
is used to guide the operating lever to move the movable arm to a desire height
with help of sling rope attachment. The arm guide plate consist of (stopper &
holder) for restricting the movement of arm within a limit. By operating the lever
from ground level, the top of movable arm can be raised to a height of 8meters
and can be brought down to a height of 2.286meters from base of pole.
In the arrangement shown in Figure 2 & 3, the operating lever is attached with
sling rope with the pole arm, so that operating lever can be operated from
ground level to move the pole arm to required height for operation/lighting and
can also be operated to move down near ground level for maintenance.
Importantly also, the operating lever can be extended by additional rod
arrangement, so that force can be easily applied to move arms. Pole arm will
swing with longitudinal displacement of sling rope of 215mm distance. Bushes
are placed in the sling rope end connections for easy movement of pole arm.
As a precautionary measure both the operating levers are not to be operated at
same time but should be'operated one after another. Also, for sage operation,
no person should stand under the light fitting arm during sliding/lowering of
lights. All the light maintenance and glowing is to be checked at ground level
before taking it to a height. After completion of maintenance work, pole cover is
to be locked and main switch to be made On. At least 2 persons should be
available for maintenance work when necessary.

There is a flange fixed on top of the pole to protect ingress of rain water and
which can also be used for fixing additional items. According to an embodiment,
one human mask is fixed to this.flange to increase the aesthetic look of the pole.
An Electrical Control gear box(EC) is mounted near the bottom part of pole to
distribute power to its equipment provide short circuit protection. One earthing is
connected to the pole with bolt connection to take care of short circuit and
human safety.
To add to the aesthetic look of the pole as an optional feature, a human face
mask has been created out of scrap iron pieces and fixed on the top'flange of
the pole as shown in accompanying Figure 4. A focused lighting has been
arranged to create a beautiful glowing .night view of the mask as shown in
Figure 5, giving the impression of a human being holding two lights in his
outstretched arms.
Electrical Control gear(EG) units for the light fittings are mounted inside a box
fixed at ground level near the pole. A locking arrangement(LC) has been
incorporated to prevent mal-bperation of the operating handle is shown in
Figure .6. The operating arrangement for maintenance of the movable arm
lighting system with arms in brought down position have been shown in the
Figure 7. All the stated arrangements are made with in-house recoverable scrap
material.
