FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to the field of newspaper vending systems. More particularly, the present invention relates to the coin operated newspaper vending systems that comprises a method and apparatus to recognize the value of money, and a system to alert the user depending on the quantity in the stack.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In vending machines, coin discriminating apparatus is incorporated to determine the authenticity of the coins, to calculate the value of the denominations rendered and to return the balance amount, in case, amount excess to the actual value of the commodity is rendered. Moreover, there is a potential risk of fake coins such as washers, circular metal disc etc. being entered, which paves way to fraudulent usage of the machine. Furthermore, there has to be a mechanism to calculate and distributethe balance in case exact amount is not available with the user. Yet another problem is, if the newspaper in the stack is empty, there should be an alert system to pass the information to the operator, so that the stack could be refilled.
Various proposals have been made to identify the coin denominations. Most of them use mechanical estimations where the coins are rolled against a wedge and based on dropping the coin, thereby, the force acting upon the sensing element is used to find the denomination. Another method employsonly eddy current, since coins have different proportions of iron
covered by a layer of brass, bronze etc. it affects the magnetic field while moving through coil or a conductor and generate eddy current, to find the denominations. Yet another method suggests the use of machine vision and deep learning algorithms to find the surface texture of different coins and also these methods use imaging techniques to make the process accurate and efficient.
The way in which such coin discriminator operates is described in the patent US6305523 (B1), in which the surface displacement irregularities of the coin is obtained as a histogram and is compared with the previously obtained histogram of the true coin to determine the denomination. The features on the surface of the coin causes changes on the impedance of the eddy current induction coil which is compared with the impedance of the previously used referencecoin. These impedances are plotted as histograms for comparison to find out the denomination. The limitation of this method is that whenever the design and pattern of the coin changes, one need to reconfigure the entire system. Moreover, it employs the surface phenomenon and material of the coin, which are not the sufficient parameters for accurate identification.
The prior art patent 201841023942,makes an attempt by using machine learning techniques together with statistical mixture models embedded with Internet Of Things(IOT) application for identifying the currency coins based on size, weight and texture. The system comprises a training phase unit.
configured to segregate the coins based on its density, shape and texture, initialization of parameters through k-Means clustering algorithm; and refine the model parameters by EM algorithm. Each of the coin will be considered and the appropriate weights are measured based on the shape, density, a Generalized Gaussian Mixture Model (GGMM) for ensuring appropriate identification of the currency coin and thereby segregating the coin into respective bins. The major drawback of this patent lies in the complexity of the process. Machine learning methodologies and algorithm are complex and work well with large data but the performance deteriorates with small data. Moreover, error diagnosis and correction is a tedious process for this limited application of newspaper vending. There is a high level of error susceptibility in this process.
There are several inventions in the existing prior arts for coin operated newspaper vending systems. However, there are no such inventions in the existing prior art to use the eddy current principle, Infra-red sensing elements and a Force Sensitive Resistor (FSR) to identify the coin denomination. Furthermore, there are no such methods to identify the values of the coins accurately and efficiently as this method does.
Therefore the present invention is introduced to enable error free
identification of coins efficiently. Moreover, it is introduced to simplify the j
existing complexities in discriminating the coins in the vending machines.
OBJECTIVE OF THE INVENTION
The main objective of the present invention is to create an infallible, yet simple, coin operated newspaper vending systems.
Another objective of the present invention is to create a coin discriminating apparatus for vending machines by the use of electronic sensing means, preferably Infra-red sensors and a combination of resistor and sensor
technology, preferably Force Sensitive Resistors (FSR).
j
Another objective of the invention is to provide a system to calculate and
i distribute the balance amount.
Yet another objective of the invention is to alert the operator, based on the quantity in the newspaper stack, in order to provide continuous supply.

Figure 5 is a chart which showsthe flow of process in coin discrimination system (31) and balance distribution system (41)in accordance with the present invention. The user selects the required newspaper and the desired quantity. Based on the selection, the price is calculated and the input port is opened. The user inputs the coin, the Infra-red sensor (33a) detects the coin. As the coin moves in the passage, magnetic field produced due to the permanent magnets (34), it generates eddy current and the impedance is measured. The Infra-red sensor (33b) detects the coin and the time taken by the coin to travel from Infra-red sensor(33a) is measured. The Force Sensitive Resistor (35) measures the resistance produced as the coin falls on it. These four inputs are fed to the control unit(24) and the values are compared with the values obtained from the reference coins during calibration. Data is matched and the coin value is found. The coin values are calculated. If the coin values exceeds the price of the newspaper, then the motor (45) opensthe slot in the balance queue (41) to deliver the balance amount in the balance outlet (17)and the motor (22) rotates the spring(23) in the newspaper stack and the newspaper is dispensed. If the coin values equals the price of the newspaper, then the newspaper is dispensed. In case if false coin or coin values less than the price of the newspaper is input, it is
conveyed out through the balance outlet (15) without the newspaper being dispensed.
Figure 6 depicts the flowchart process representation of cloud communication unit in accordance with the present invention.Based on the quantity of the newspaper in the stack, the sensing element (25) sends information to GSM module (26), which sends alert to user interface devices (53) through cloud (52).
The present invention considers weight, Iron composition and Impedance to discriminate the coin and hence accuracy of recognition is improved compared to other methods without much complexities. Moreover, it employs a system to calculate and distribute the balance which makes this invention more flexible. Furthermore, the alert system based on the quantity available in the stack enables continuous supply.
